Sound Card for fps game

James while I do get your points and agree on the music front that headsets usually lack when it comes to reproducing music I cannot agree that headsets are bad for gaming. My pc350 allowed me to pinpoint people easier in css and csgo than a cheaper headset like my really old cheaper sennheiser. Additionally the sound was clearer.

In gaming your not really worried about whether the sound is reproduced perfectly or not as long as it is identifiable ie footsteps/gun sounds and you can tell where it is coming from. The original poster wants it for gaming and not perfect audio reproduction. He even said it is for fps games to help improve his game. I used to play on speakers when I started and even my cheap sennheisers were an improvement on speakers. I wasn't saying for him to go buy a 200 pound headset but rather telling him what I used. He should start off with a cheaper headset/headphones and if he gets into competitive play and wants something better than he should get either a better headset and a sound card. My point really is that a sound card wouldn't be my first purchase if I was him from my own experience.

Also he said he had some speakers so he can use them for his music and have the best of both worlds.

Last point my pc350s are pretty good with music and videos. They are not the best but they are not bad as you say they are they werent bought for music or videos they were bought for gaming.

I get what you're saying...

But there isn't really any point in spending 200 euros on a headset. I'd say spend maximum of 100 euros on a headset, because at that price you can't get decent headphones and soundcard combo.

I maintain what I say though, good combination of soundcard and headphones will still beat any headset in music and gaming.

Oh hey Rast, didn't see you were still around :P

Boards may have onboard, but a discreet option is always better in my opinion and experience. All sound cards are certainly not created equal :P
It's mostly down to opinion. As is the wrangling over headsets/headphones/amps and blah blah. Everyone's ears are different and detection of frequencies/ranges declines as you grow older. (and I mean from around 20+) ... it's why Bose make a mint on systems that mostly look nice in a lounge, not too much comment about the sound as... well they look nice.

There's also onboard and 'onboard'. Anything around a Realtek AL889a/b/c is good enough sound production for whatever you're doing. Molesting the sound from the rear jack to your ears is personal taste.

Most of the effects on cards don't work since Windows XP.. which is an odd thing.

No one can really say one system is better than another. It's like saying banana milkshake is the best, when it's abundantly obvious to anyone with any degree of taste in milkshake knows that strawberry is a clear winner - and slam anyone who says otherwize ! ;)

Ive recently bought Asus Xonar D2X and Roccat Kaves and im very impressed. I can say D2X better then my on board sound (Striker II Extreme) and Kaves better than SteelSeries 5hv2 with usb/onboard. Onboard couldnt produce the bass and vibrations the D2X can. Total Cost £140. D2X £80, Kaves £60. Im happy and everytime im on BF3 im grinning from ear to ear. Ofcourse saying what better above is my opinion and as previously said, every person is different.

I have chosen as the X-Fi sound card.
Now should I choose headphones 5.1 or 7.1. The X-FI is only 5.1, so I could not get 7.1 headphones, I guess.
Someone could advise me of the surround speakers to connect to the headset?

You dont get 5.1 or 7.1 headphones full stop. You get good stereo headphones for the same price and enjoy superior audio in games AND music.

Example of a 'simulated' surround headset, quite good but create a weird soundfield in my opinion. Also have their own sound processing which i personally don't like

5.1 'true' surround headset with individual drivers, (not just 2). I use these for gaming and they're great.

If you want 'sound quality' stick with higher end stereo headset and use CMSS3D to create your surround environment. (this is effectively exactly what the megaladon headset does above)

tritton is powered by usb but uses 3 3.5 jacks to get 5.1 surround the megalodon is usb only and has it's own sound processing in the box.

You can connect the jacks to your motherboard sound or a discreet sound card, has a green, red, black and pink connector which is standard for most sound output solutions.

I was a little torn between the Roccat kave and Tritton pc510,
Guess I'll take the Roccat kave, they say it's best to play even though it is more uncomfortable than the Tritton.

Thank all, especially SuB. And I apologize if my indecision may have upset someone (and my English).

This afternoon I will make the purchase of the x-fi titanium fatality, and let you know of my impressions. I hope that there are no problems that some users have found with the operating system windows 7 or vista 64 bit

No, I still can not decide whether to go with CMSS-3D speakers + 5.1 + stereo headphone (AD700), or 5.1 + x-fi headphone normal setting.
I want the positional sound, not the sound for the atmosphere.
