Simple Soldering Guide

Right guys a little lesson in soldering and Heatshrink, I'm not going to teach anyone's grandmother to suck eggs here as most of you are probably already proficient in this sacred modding art.. but for the newbies here we go.

Tools you will definitely need in your arsenal are:

A soldering iron (a quality iron goes a long way).
Solder (lead free - environmentally friendly and better for your health).
Wire strippers & a pair of sharp angle cutters.
Heatshrink.
Heatgun (not necessary but some people prefer one).
Helping hands (or Girlfriend, Mother).

Stage 1 - Preparation.

Preparing your cables is possibly the easiest part of this, take your wire strippers and remove around 1cm of cable sleeve from your cables to expose the wire core, if you don't have a set of wire strippers you can use angle cutters to gently work the sleeve off but go carefully as it is far to easy to just cut straight through. See isn't it easy!

Right now to prepare the wire core before soldering them together you will need to "Tin" them, this is simpler than it sounds. While you have your cables held in your "Helping Hands" hold the tip of your soldering iron beneath the bare wires making contact now touch the top of the wire with the solder, the solder should flow into the wire like gravy on chips mmmmm chips. Now that we have 2 pieces of tinned wire ready to be soldered together DON'T forget to cut a piece of Heatshrink large enough to cover the bared area and slide it onto one of the lengths.

Stage 2 - Soldering.

This part is pretty simple too, place both lengths of cable into your "Helping Hands" and marry them up so that both tinned pieces of bare wire are laid side by side, now with your soldering iron again place the tip beneath the wires and again touch the top of the wires with the solder and allow the solder to flow bonding both wires into one. You should now have a nice "shiny" solder join. Perfect :)

Stage 3 - Finishing.

There are multiple ways to apply the Heatshrink, some people prefer heatguns or a lighter I just use the broad edge of my soldering iron. Anyway now that we have bonded our wires simply slide the Heatshrink down the wire and cover the bare area then apply a little heat. - Et Voila and complete solder.

That's it for now but stay tuned as I have a LED wiring guide coming soon ;)

Nice guide Wraithy! :cool5: I remember soldering xrl cables years ago, really need to buy a half decent soldering iron at somepoint! Looking forward to more! =00=

Just started putting together a LED wiring guide but damn!! It's soooo complicated, I'm going to try and break it down I think so it's easily understandable. There is just so many factors to take on board, Series, parallel, resistance, voltages.... ect ect ect.

I've always much rathered these types of wire strippers.

Swore by them in college.

I have a set of those, and I've glued googley eyes on them. It makes it look like a parrot or a T-rex one way round, and if you turn them upside down it looks like a rabbit's head :)

dont forget form factor, with LED's and size ... lol i hate size ... lol good little guide though.
only thing id add is a good heat mat/ cutting mat or board that you can work on so you dont ruin nice tables and desks.

surface mount leds are fun .....

and a little light box for stencils ... but hungry on bats lol

Yeah.. the LED guide I'm doing is for case lighting via molex. Wow board arrays are lots of work. Yikes.

its not really an array, just lots of leds in parallel to create a light source.
ill be working on a 23k LED array one day soon to try and make a giant GB
