I was wondering what would be good pieces to use for a summer project im going to work on... I want to make a 50tb server running raid 10... I want to be able store all my media on it plus have access to it anywhere.. I would like to use amd pieces..and hopeful use pc pieces because server pieces are a little out my budget.. I dont know where to start... plz any advice will be helpful...

Do you mean 5TB? RAID 10 cuts your disk space in half so you would need 5 2TB discs to get 5TB. If you really mean 50, you won't be doing that with normal PC hardware.

Depends on your motherboard and if you are willing to spend money on a raid card. Typically on a motherboard you'll have 8 SATA ports, highest capacity hard drives are 3TB, so 8*3=24TB. Now if you want to RAID 10, you'll end up with 12TB.

yes i want HSD.. So its not possible to put more than one raid cards in a pc.. My budget for this server is 2500 not including the hdd.... I saw in TinyToms' video he had 12 1tb hdd..

At that price you can get yourself a really nice Raidcard. If you want hot swappable drives you can look at some drive bay adapters that convert 3 5.25" to 4 3.5" drive bays. I think Raidsonic makes some that are hot swappable. (called Icy Box something) Just to give you some ideas on a case, the Xigmatek Utgard would be a good idea, since it is cheep and cheerful and offers a lot of drive bays. There might be some fulltowers having more. For motherboard and CPU I would go with something like an H67 or even H55 bundled up with a Core i3 or low end Core i5. You could use the onboard graphics, so that would save you some money, which could invest in a better raid card. Just did a quick scan and here is a 28 port raid card for around 1000 pounds. Click

I'm not the expert when it comes to raid card, but that one does look really nice

EDIT: Oh and some of the big Lian Li cases have 12 5.25" drive bays, which would be able to convert to 16 hot swappable 3.25" drive bays, I would think.

50tb? Youd be spending about £3000 just on raid cards LOL

Please dude I know its nice to dream these things up, but at least do a little homework first.

In fairness Tom, that RAID card would allow 24 internal HDD connections and with 3GB HDD's he would have 72GB. Not quite the 100GB he would need but not that far off really.. Still would have a 36GB RAID 10 array with the card costing 1K.

Problem would be the HDD's costing around £150 each... Perhaps you could get a deal somewhere for buying 24 of them. That would take you up to 3.5k for the HDD's on top of the 1k RAID controller.

haha.. ok maybe I was shooting for the moon, what can I say the moon is nice.. I thought I could 24 2tb hdd to a Adaptec RAID 52445 or areca ARC-1680IX which Im having hard time trying to find reviews on... Ok my head is back on mars now.. I like tinytoms 12tb server but what would be a good amd n board to use because I always spend to much on the latest when I don't need to. And I know servers don't need the lastest and greatest..

I only want 50tb with running raid 10... It will be only 25tb...Sorry if it sounded like I wanted 100tb in the system..

My uncle and I made a arrangement, he will take care of the hdd as long as I take care of everything else so it balance out 50/50..

Thank you so much for your help... I really appreciate it..

The Utgard will not support enough drives, you need a full on server case mate.

TBH even 25TB usable its complete lunacy and it will be a space heater, and soooooooooooooooooooooo loud.

I really cant say to you enough this is pointless for anything but a server room.

50/3 = 16.66, so you'll need 17 hard drive bays. So in all seriousness, you'll need to get a server case, not desktop ATX case can take that many hard drives.

The only server case that i do know of is Norco RPC-4224 4U, you'll also be able to raid everything, but with all the hard drives running, it's so loud as this video will show.

would it make more sense to make 2 or 3 smaller servers and network them together.. instead of having a behemoth case.. I was thinking about it yesterday, I could make a server just for music, one just for movies, and one for gaming...

A server for each? how much music do you have FGS? Seriously dude they will create so much heat and noise youll wish you never wasted your money.

My 12tb one is bad enough!
