Sata hdd not detected

Hey

My mate's gigabyte GA-K8NE has been a bit on-off recently when reading his sata hard drive. Recently it has given up completely reading it. I have looked briefly through the bios and nothing sata/raid/ide related is disabled.

I have tested the hdd in my pc and it loads fine. The sata drivers must be installed as it has been working..for a while.

Motherboard on the way out?

Do you have another SATA disk to insert in his system? Maybe it's the combination of the motherboard and the disk. Not really likely, but better than RMA'ing or dumping it for nothing.

Also, try using another SATA cable and slot. This is really a long shot, but it eliminates another possibility :)

try another sata port on the MB.

as the drive is functioning fine on another system i would say check all sata options in the bios first but the MB or port is failing

Hes tried all the ports

I tried a different cable

We dont have a spare drive but as it was ok before it sounds like the motherboard sata controller might have died

It is fairly old at least 3 years old

Hmm then it sounds like a hell of a lot like a dying motherboard to me :( Might be a good idea to hunt on eBay for a replacement if the socket isn't too outdated.

Try going to computer/mycomputer->manage->disk management and see if it's there. It could ask u when u go there to allow it to initialize the drive.

Other than that, sometimes with ide/sata devices, esp in xp, have to be sure to login on an administrator account to get the drivers to install properly.

Drivers for Drives ? Yeah thats what I thought. It needs them for cd/dvd drives too.
