SASJBVL Gaming rig

Thread moved to new build advice :)

GPU
If you're gaming at 1080p a GTX 970 will absolutely serve you fine and the missing 0.5GB really won't make much of a difference. Going for a 980 would be a waste then. If you however plan to SLI the cards later a 980 would not be a bad idea considering the fact that VRAM does not stack up, so you'll still effectively only have 4GB.

That said, the GTX 980 Ti is coming very soon and whilst it'll probably be a little more expensive than the 980, its release might lower the prices on the latter. The 390x also seems to be right around the corner as AMD have been teasing stuff so the best you could do now is wait for a bit.

Unless you're sticking with 1080p, then one 970 or 980 really is going to be enough despite newer cards coming out and it wouldn't be worth waiting for them (unless you're hoping for that drop in pricing).

PSU
Knowing what GPUs you're gonna go with would help determining PSU Wattage requirements. For a single card set-up I wouldn't go higher than a nice quality 650 Watt unit, although with the Nvidias you can get away with 550 Watts.

For multi-card setups though, 750 would be enough for 2 Nvidia cards although once again the AMD cards sip a lot more power so if you want 2x 290x cards then 850 Watt is really the minimum that you'll want to get.

Case
Don't get an Aerocool. No, don't.

As suggested have a look at the Phanteks offerings, or even the NZXT Phantom series if you want slightly more 'gamer' ish looks like on the Aerocool.

Cheers Rick for the info and liking the phanteks enthoo primo ultimate case and id say probably go two at a later stage but gigabyte gtx 980 looks alright or the MSI GeForce GTX 980 Gaming 4GB

The Primo really is a huuuuuge watercooling case though, so if you're sticking with aircooling it's a bit of a waste (and also not great at it cause there is so much space). Have you seen the Enthoo Pro? Got similar looks but is a fair bit smaller. Still has lots of watercooling options but is much better for aircooling, cheaper and won't take up as much unecessary space (and the system won't look as empty).

If you're looking for a GTX 980, personally I'd get either that MSI Gaming card, or the Asus Strix :)

yeah looking at both towers at the moment but I do prefer water cooled well liquid cooled over air cooled and yeah thought msi card aswell cheers

Well there are several forms of watercooling. There's AIO coolers like the Corsairs which will just look silly in the Primo, and then there's full on custom loops which will be fine it either case. If you want to go full on balls-to-the-walls though, the Primo is what you're looking for.

For the GPUs here though, I can vouch for the ASUS Strix, they are dead silent while idle and are quite fairly quiet during gaming loads as well, despite the fans spinning up some... and I'm VERY anal about noise lol.

Ok so my list is as follows so far and I have locked these in.
Phanteks Enthoo Primo Ultimate love having the room
Intel core I& 4790k
Avexir Blitz 1.1 Gaming dragon 32gb(4x8gb)
MSI 297 Gaming 9 ACK
Creative sound blaster zxr
as for power supply and Graphics card im still researching so what are your thoughts and cons. I am also going liquid cooled for the piece of mind.

Oh please for the love of god don't get 32GB of ram... that makes me cringe. You only need 8GB.. at most 16GB if you really feel like you need it. You can save a lot of money getting less and adding in a good size SSD for the OS/main programs to really make the rig quick.

For the motherboard, if you want MSI, MSI Z97A GAMING 6 would be a better option. It's much cheaper and serves the same purpose. I'd only spend more if you desperately wanted to use some feature it has over the cheaper one. Killer Network/LAN won't help your internet btw so don't let that fool you. Only thing helping your speeds/latency will be your actual download/upload from your ISP.

Oh god.. creative sound card.. lol sorry but.. nope!;) You're learning so i'll let it slide;)
For that kind of money you can get an ASUS STX or a STXII. Much much much much better! You could also get external AMP/DACs for cheaper that'll be marginally worse but save little more money. If you're interested I can recommend one. I know Feronix is into that stuff too, he's done more research on it than I have.

In my honest opinion for GPU at the moment is wait. AMDs new cards will be here by end of June. If anything waiting little over a month is worth it due to the fact prices will fall and change so both can be competitive. That means you can probably get two cards for hardly anymore money. PSU wise? I'd go with a 650watt. If you plan on 1440p/4k, then you will want a 750watt/850watt since you will need another card to power that res.

Ok so update ive done more researching and have down sized to stuff I think will be good and what I want.

I7 4790k
MSI z97 Gaming 5
Kingston hyperX fury Red 16gb
MSI NVIDIA GTX980 gaming 4gb
Creative soundblaster z cause I want decent sound and bang for buck its good I know people will bitch but cant all be the same haha
NZXT Noctis 450 mid tower case
Samsung 850 EVO 250gb but might go 500gb sata3 solid state drive
Seagate Barracuda 2TB
Corsair Hydro Series H110 Liquid cpu cooler
antec high current gamer M 850w 80Plus

Have ordered case but delay as their sold out haha

Bang for the buck with Creative? More like Banging then breaking lol
Seriously for that kind of money you can get more bang for the buck! It's not that the hardware is bad(it's not but for the money it is) it's more of the drivers are a pain in the ass and make it unbearable to use. But if you really want it then who am I to stop you? Just don't say I didn't warn ya;)

On the ssd, from personal experience, get the single biggest one you can now. I've spent way to much money on ssd's getting slightly smaller ones. Would have saved money in the long run just getting one big ass one!

For the PSU I would say go with a Seasonic or Superflower unit that is 650watts. If you plan on SLI or Crossfire get 750watts instead. Save some money and get more quality;)

Now for the GPU. This is all personal opinion. I would wait for the GPU. Next ones are due out next month most likely the 25th. It's best to wait and see what happens and see which cards become the best price/performance ratio. If you really want it now, then a 980 would do fine. Where I live it's nearly the same price to get 290x's in CF for one 980, i'd rather get that. Just would need at least a 750watt psu for that. Just something to think about.

With the PSU i agreed don't buy the Antec get a Seasonic with SuperFlower not many places here carry them IMO look at a Seasonic, EVGA or Corsair.

Don't listen to NeverBackDown, go for 32GB, you'll never regret it!... why?, cause if you ever use that much, something is wrong... even I have somewhat of an issue of going for 16GB usage lol, but can do it :p

Am I the only one who doesn't understand Chrazy's jokes/cheeky banter sometimes?

Nothing against you dude, might just be me ;)

Antec makes SOLID PSUs.
Also regarding the sound card, since the motherboard has a "decent" audio implementation I'd recommend waiting, then if you think you need more go for an asus essence one.
