[Routers] - Replacement for a ZyXel

My ZyXel has done me well, but seems to be "doing strange things" recently, resuliting in poor stability. (sure its the router, ive moved back to a "fixed rate" line (old IPStream services).

Im looking a the netgear DG834G v3 - and the speedtouch range - anyone with experience of these?

Something to note though, its needs to have a good, SPI firewall, such as the zyxels...saves on the port forwarding issues no end. (Its why i loved the zyxel!!)

Thanks

The DG834G doesn't support QoS.

What model Zyxel do you have?

Most routers have SPI firewalls, even the cheap ones like safecom.

Draytek and Cisco are the best, but they cost too much for a home user and I doubt you would gain anything for the extra money, altho it depends on the number of clients I guess.

I dont need QoS (all my past routers have had it, though)

What model Zyxel do you have?

P660H-D1 (i think)

Most routers have SPI firewalls, even the cheap ones like safecom.

I also have had two safecom's (both very good) - minus that the SPI didnt work aswell as the zyxels.

How did it not work as well as the ZyXels?

Required port forwarding for some apps where as the zyxel does not - dispite the zyxel having a stricter NAT.

Every SPI firewall should work/act in the same way (only allowing packets that are part of an established connection)

What problems are you having with the zyxel tho :confused:

The firewall and features of the 660H seem pretty excellent.

* Stateful Packet Inspection Firewall

- IP Filter on source & destination

- Intrusion detection, DoS, DDoS Prevention

- Real-time Attack Alert and Logs

* Disable Firewall Option

* Content Filtering

- Keyword and URL blocking

- Trusted IP access

- Time scheduling

- Email and logging notification

I know :)

Problem is that satbility has become a issue - seems ok with my Safecom, but that doesent have all those features

If you're the only client, you could just setup the safecom on a DMZ (making sure your pc has good firewall+anti-virus protection).

Would bypass stuff, but you could see if it makes a difference.

You could try resetting the ZyXel to defaults or even try a newer firmware. (RMA it maybe if it causes bad problems and you absolutely know it's the router)

My setup is pretty old now, but all I have is:

ADSL router > DMZ > Linux Firewall > Internal Network

The DMZ + The Internal Network both have different IP ranges.

Here's what I think:

CISCO>OpenWRT/Unix/Linux*>Draytek>ZyXel>netgear-buffalo-Inventel>Speedtouch>belkin-USR-3Com-Linksys(new)>Safecom

*WRT/Unix/Linux = Custom Firmwares/PC Based etc (IPTables/IPChains) - Old Linksys etc

The router serves 4 PC's in total - but i suppose i could try DMZ, my firewall/av/as is cirtianally up to the job! (Kerio paid, nod32, Sd)

You don't really want a DMZ then

The Buffalo routers look quite good and have the features that the ZyXel routers have. They're also around the same price.

QoS is very usefull for a gamer aswell. Especially if you have 4 clients who could be downloading/on net etc while you're on a game.

Ive never used QoS
