HELP - Virgin Media Super Hub and a Netgear N600 Router

Basically got a hub installed from VM.
I have this £100 odd router than can be for ADSL and Fiber.
Obviously i dont wanna sell/throw that router away so im trying to make it act as like a 'switch'
And ive done that so far.

So currently connection goes:
VM--> Hub-->(ethernet)--> £100 router--> PC(wired)

Now i had to change some shiz on the hub to be able to connect the router through LAN to LAN.
(I got the method below from post #8 on this link -
http://www.avforums.com/forums/virg...8-port-router-modem-superhub-replacement.html )
I changed the HDCP or something like that to start from 192.168.0.101
On the £100 router, i turned the DHCP off and changed that routers IP address to 192.168.0.2
Now this enabled me to use the £100 router as switch/router. Therefore what im using now to connect my pc.
(The above link worked to be able to use the router as switch/router, which was my initial problem)
Now earlier in the day, i could connect on the wifi (2.4 and 5ghz) that the £100 router was broadcasting (iPhone 5, iPad 3 was used)
Now i cant for some reason. I was chilling on a 30.5Mbit/s earlier :(
All devices in this house can see the signal from the 2.4 and 5ghz but when u try and connect, it cant.
This bit is my problem.

The £100 odd router is a Netgear DGND3700v2.

I got a friend to try and help me out.
He suggested to swap which hub/router HDCP was to be turned off.
This: (the suggested solution)
Super hub's HDCP to be turned off. (Was previously on)
Netgear DGND3700v2's HDCP to be turned on. (Was previously off)

Tried it, broke everything.
Wifi from the SH was broadcasting but couldn't connect.
No internet on my PC as apparently no network was available (connected through Ethernet)

If you setup the virgin media box to modem mode, it should disable DHCP itself

That should mean the netgear will be doing the PPPoE authentication and will have a external IP on it's WAN interface.
The Netgear should have DHCP enabled (unless you want to use fixed IP's)

Should be simple setup providing the virgin box is disabling wifi / dhcp etc.

Another option would be to use bridge mode on the netgear WAN interface but really depends on whether it supports bridge mode.

I was a bit confused when I first read the post saying about HDCP
HDCP = High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection
DHCP = Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol

Looking at the OP, you should have network like this:

Virgin SuperHub (modem mode) => Netgear (NAT/routing/firewall/DHCP) => Internal Network

Using modem mode or bridge mode should be the best option as it will stop the issue of double NAT.

Hi. Thanks for someone finally replying.
I really want to avoid putting the hub into 'modem mode' because the hub will be downstairs and its need to be able to connect two devices onto it, a computer and a xbox.

Currently I have it connected like this:
Hub =>(Ethernet)=> Netgear =>(Ethernet)=> Gaming PC
|
|(Ethernet)
|
PC
Xbox

The Ethernet used to connect the hub and the netgear is in LAN port 1 of both devices.
This is the picture of the back of the netgear router:

Is there a way I could do the following:
Connect hub and netgear router together and have 2.4ghz on the hub active and both 2.4 and 5ghz on the netgear active and also being able to use the netgear as like kind of a switch because I need to connect two more via Ethernet, my gaming pc and work pc.

This is my second day trying to fix this problem and no luck at all.
However yesterday when I was trying to figure out how to connect the hub and the netgear by changing some settings that I found from this post (POST #8 on this link: http://www.avforums.com/forums/virg...8-port-router-modem-superhub-replacement.html ) (WILL INCLUDE THE SETTINGS ON THE HUB AND THE NETGEAR CHANGED BELOW) I managed to connect my iPhone 5 to the netgear 5ghz and register a 31.5Mbit/s download speed. However when I powered everything to neatly rearrange everything in the right order and when finished, turned it back on, I wasn't able to connect to the netgear's wifi signal(however I could see them, but not connect)

Settings on the routers: (The only settings I have changed to be able to use the netgear as a switch like device [settings copied from link on #8 post above])
-SuperHub:
DHCP: on
DHCP range: 192.168.0.3 to 200
Max users: 198
Lease Time: 1 Week

-Netgear DGND3700v2
Router ip address: 192.168.0.2 (Originally .0.1)
DHCP: off
DHCP: N/A

That is all the settings changed.

Im sorry its such a long read. Just trying to explain all of the details and changes I have made for you to understand. I hope you and other people could help me.

Thanks you.

Have you tried:

  • running just one WiFi frequency (2.4/5) and see what happens
  • changing the WiFi channel
  • changing the algorithm for WiFi password or setting WiFi with no password to see if you can connect then
Does it give you any error when you try to connect and it doesn't?

If you just want the netgear to work as a wifi range extender/repeater you could setup the netgear with the same SSID + WPA2-PSK but a different channel (windows etc doesn't seem to care about channels and will just connect seamlessly to either router depending on which one is within the wifi range).
This would mean you would have 2 DHCP servers running on the same network tho so you would have to setup each with their own range of addresses (eg: virgin - 1-150 .. netgear - 152-255) you would probably have double NAT but it would work.

Or you could disable wifi on the virgin and just use wifi on the netgear

Or use the netgear in repeater mode

I have not tried this yet but I will do if it we don't find a way to solve it.

About the DHCP, it's on on the VM hub but off on the netgear router.
If I have the DHCP on the VM hub and netgear's DHCP on, yes wireless devices can connect to both however computers that are connected through Ethernet on the netgear router will have no internet, like its blocked.

Or you could disable wifi on the virgin and just use wifi on the netgear
Problem with this is that i cant even achieve it. Due to the fact that i need to turn the DHCP on the netgear router but then i cant get internet on the computer which is connected through the Ethernet cable

I have tried all of these but it doesn't seem to work.

It seems that the problem, as far as im aware, is the DHCP business.
I think, (ithink) to be able for a device to connect and access the internet through the netgear router, i need to turn it on HOWEVER if i do so, i cannot get internet on wired computers that are connected through Ethernet cable.

Okay i just got annoyed and factory reset the VM hub.
When i did that i managed to connect my iPhone 5 onto the netgear's 5GHz and the internet is working, with no problems on the computer that's connected through Ethernet cables.
However, i try to connect my iPad3 and an Acer v5 laptop to the 5GHz but it wouldn't connect at all for the iPad and 'limited' on the laptop. It seems that it only let in one device onto it.

The settings for it now is as follows:
DHCP: on
DHCP range: 192.168.0.2 to .0.254

And the settings on the netgear:
DHCP: off
DHCP range: N/A

Please help still having problems.
