Lol this seems like somehting very different to all the other threads, but i thougth it was a valid topic, i hvae a wireless router and it gets pretty hot, i also have a friend who;s wireless router fried due to what we think was overheating.

Do they need to be kept cool, not a good idea to have them constantly on or does it not matter? are they designed to withstand the heat?

yup, good thing to keep em cool, mine runs pretty hot hut it has small "feet" so it is slightly elevated and lt air get underneath. maybe try a ghetto version of that?

I cut a hole in the side of my WGT634U and stuck a fan on to it, then removed one of the end caps. It hasn't crashed since.

what kind of router do you have mate? maybe you could do a little router case modding and stick a small 40mm fan on there

Yeah they can get hot and die, I have a D-Link gamers wired and wireless router and strange as it is the wired gets hotter than the wireless, I eventually made a shelf in the basement in the utility room and stuck them down there with the cable modem, no problems as it stay cool in both the winter and summer.

yeah my netgear router i have a feeling might die this summer because the room that its in will get pretty damn warm this summer so im going to have to set aside some moolah just incase it does shit on me

If it does die get the D-Link gamer's router its great, easy setup doesnt put out too much heat but the nice thing is most of your ping's will be cut in half if not more.

Most of my local pings dropped around 30% but other pings were cut in half, it has some software called GameFuel that talks to servers in a different way. Not sure how it works but its nice.

Its just Qos, which is traffic shaping and nothing special tbh, and its done using the local lan, not the network.

Probably cost twice as much though, although your in the US so it would have been a lot cheeper.

I bought the wired new for 130 us which was alot but I was told it was great and it wasn't alot more than other 1000mps routers on the market at the time and when i needed a wireless i just stuck with the same one but got it off ebay for 65 plus shipping. wierd thing is now the wireless is only $10 more than a wired.

ive had bad experience with Dlink a bought a router that lasted me one week, then the replacement lasted me 2 days?

Thats very good price wise. Over here Linksys is about £35, the D-Link is about £110. If the price over here was the same as it is in the US, I would have brought one a long time ago, but to put it into perspective, over here, they are $194. which imo is a good reason not to get one .

I'm happy with my Linksys WAG54G, it gets toasty, but seems fine, its the nature of the tec. Coils = Heat,

Keep it somewhere well ventilated and it should be fine.

i have a belkin, you could probably fry eggs on, but the user manual says aslong as it is below 60*C it will operate normally so...i dunno *shrugs*
