hi guys,

i'm just starting to build my first ever, half decent gaming machine. Just to prove it, i've been with an intel i740, some integrated laptop cards and currently, a 5700le. Shameful.. i know. But i've always been a console boy anyways (obvious). BUT, now i'm building a new pc, based around my (soon to be) 8800 gts.

Anyways, i'm thinking of scoring a P5k. I was considering the SE version (cause it's half the price). Are we still talking about same fundamental board? or is the SE the equivalent of my 5700LE?

Theres another P5k (the base model, with firewire) that's also affordable. Any help would be great.

The other parts (not here yet) are most probably going to be-

-2 gig corsair xms2 (

up between the DHX and dominator <--money) and the 800 vs 1066 versions. Any suggestions?

-intel e4500

-not sure about case, heatsink or power supply.

I've currently got a Proview 22" as well. First real big build... tight on cash. :) aren't we always?

Hope you guys can help

well the 8800 is paid for, so that's no worries. i was happy to pay for the best bang/buck components. The situation is, i'll leech as much as i can from dad, and i'll have to pull the rest. hehe.

So yeah, bang/buck components was the idea (overclocking saving on cash). i was reading around and things like the coolermaster xdream is excellent value. So i figured instead of going for a e4600, i'll do a e4500, and push it a bit more. Things that i should pay for, i will. i dont think i'll go too scant on the ram or go for an oven like case etc.

i was just concerned that if i do go decent on ram, case etc, i might waste my money going for the P5K SE. that's why i was wondering whether it were the same board.

Pretty much, if you tried to spend as little as possible, without bottlenecking the 8800, how would the you pros do it? The only thing set atm, is the 8800, my tv tuner card and i'm keeping my HDD. that's all. case, psu, ram, board and cpu is what i'm looking at.

if it really really depending on price, i'd try to stay under 650 if possible. but if it means better value to go up a bit, i'd sell my body on the net some more to get to hammer it on crysis. :) <-- that looks really sweet eh? can't wait.

Have a look at these for the things you've listed above:

PSU

Mobo

RAM

CPU

Coming to around £310 by my making. Good solid performers with a bit of overclocking potential in there.

As for case all you really need is one that'll fit... A+ monolize 1 perhaps?

SWEET MAN. you freaken gun.

yeah, unfortunately, uk sites want 50 GBP for shipping. Hehe. but i found a seller in AU with the OCZ. i didn't know they were that sick. For the price here though, i could pull a pair of corsair TWIN2X2048-6400C4D... what do you reckon man?

although the a-bit only takes up to 800 ram ( i think), i respect ur decision, so that's gonna be my board eh.

CPU i might go the 6550, $211 AUD vs $148 for the 4500. prob worth the up-ing.

can't score the case, can't find it here. i'll be using a fair bit of dough, so ill probably go thermaltake matrix (only $100 AUD here).

There's the ram still iffy, but did you have anything else you wanted to add? I'ma be spending more than i thought.. but dude.. thanks.. i reckon i'll be creaming once this is cranking

Edit- Actually, the OCZ would eat up that ram. You showed me the way. Fark i can't wait. Cheers again Ham, i appreciate your help dude.

DUDE,

i've gone spastic and tried to get it as close as your specs. Heres the deal so far.

CPU-

e6850 (i know you said e6550, but that was $211 AUD, i scored an OEM e6850 for $265)

Cooler-

Zalman Typhoon VX (for 68 bucks)

Mobo-

Abit Ip35 Pro (for $207)

Ram-

OCZ special ops urban elite - 4 gig (i figured its expensive to get another set shipped in, so i might as well try to score 4 gigs at once. My supplier was out of stock and your link was the only place i could find that were happy to ship it to australia... and wtf about the price?? it's so cheap compared to everywhere else... the elite was cheaper than the normal special ops??? thanks man)

Case + PSU

Haven't bought it yet but it's prob gonna be a Gigabyte Poseidon with a Topower 500w psu ($115 AUD & $69 respectively)

that's a total of erm... $960-1064 AUD (depending on how much that Uk site charges me for shipping). A 30-40% gain on what i aimed for... but hey. :)

What do you reckon mate?

Right, i'm tempted to buy a P5k deluxe, though i've got my doubts on my 'upgrade set'.

This is my current 'idea':

1) Asus P5K (Deluxe)

2) Intel Q6600

3) As much DDR2 Geil matched ram as i can fit in the damn thing (they are cheap nowadays so why the hell not take advantage of it, right?)

4) 8800GT

Now i've heard people mentioning that the 8800 GT uses PCIe2.0 .. so as such -should- be used with mobos using 2.0 (while it's compatible with 1.0 .. it's like using an usb2 device on an usb1 port.. it'll work, just not at optimal speed).

Is the P5K deluxe using PCIe2.0, or is it still 1.0 , and in either way, how well would this setup rate as an 'upgrade' (my current system is

so everything part from hdd/sound and monitor is getting an upgrade)
