Rapid Office Laptop

When it comes to laptops I only really care about high performance stuff so I need some help finding a laptop around the £500 mark.

The purpose is basically, MS Office use and internet browsing.
In order for it to be rapid I'm looking for an SSD, no GPU, i5, 8GB RAM (or 4GB as long as it's upgradable).

I've no idea which brands (or custom places) have good value and build quality around this price.

Any suggestions are welcomed!

Cheers.

BTW it's not for me - it's for a family member.

Any requirements for battery life? Portability? Weight?

First thing off the top of my head is the new Surface 3(not pro). Comes with office, good battery, light, good enough CPU, 4GB of ram(not upgradeable. If this isn't for them then you should expect to pay extra for Office and it ain't cheap.

They're all secondary to the initial requirements really.
They aren't great with tech and they specifically requested no touch screen. So surface isn't an option.

Don't know if this is available in the UK but try searching for an ASUS Zenbook UX305FA-ASM1. Here's a link to a US site if the spec sheet is all your after. Here

MS Office can be dirt cheap, depending on who you work for. I got it for £9.95 under the Microsoft Home Use Program, check with your employer :). Otherwise it's £110 directly from MS which I think is okay considering what you get for that.

You really don't need 8GB for web browsing unless the family member plans to have 30 tabs open at all times. I use an i3 laptop for school, with a 120GB SSD in it and 4GB RAM and it's perfect for notes (Office work) and even PhotoShop.

The only advantage an i5 will have over a same generation i3 will be .1 to .3GHz clockspeed. They're all Hyperthreaded dual cores anyway. They won't need it.

What about the size? Is ultrabook size (13.3") okay or do they want it as big as possible? Full HD resolution?

Well Chrome can be pretty heavy on the old RAM - but I'm not too fussed as that can be upgraded easily.

Tbh I don't know much about mobile CPUs so I'd have to do a bit of research.

I think they'd prefer 15.6 (possibly 14) and 1080p would be a plus.

Well, you can configure this thing with an i3 4100M, 8GB RAM and a 240GB Kingston V300 for around 490 quid :) 768p though, but it's a small screen and they likely won't see much of a difference.

Besides, if it's just for home usage they can always hook it up to a higher resolution monitor later. It has HD4600 graphics so that'd be more than fine.
