I have a need to RANT

I am married and I have two teenage sons at school

The eldest starts college next year and the youngest starts college the year after

This is going to be an expensive couple of years for me

I have two older children who have flown the nest

I have a job

After being a year and a half unemployed and a year in this job I’ve just about caught up with the bills, and I appreciate the fact that I even have a job

About the job, though

The wages ain’t great, I’m currently in disagreement with the bosses over this

My job title is IT Support Analyst, but I’m basically a bench technician

I have my CompTIA A+ and a couple of MCP certificates and years of build/install break/fix experience

I have worked on computers since the days of the Pentium 486 and before

When I applied for the job it was advertised at 16K PA but I started on 15K with a review promised every three months, which hasn’t happened

I diagnose problems with both software and hardware and correct them

I install and configure wireless and wired network devices and custom software solutions

I have one colleague in my department who is younger than me, he has no certification, but he has some experience

He started a couple of months before me so he didn’t know that much when I started

I have only just found out that last year the company has been paying him £750 PA more than me??

WTF

I know how much this job is worth and they are paying us less than they should

And they’re paying him £750 PA more than me

WTF

Why did I waste so much time studying for certificates

I don’t have a beef with my colleague, he’s OK, I don’t know if I would go out of my way to have a drink with him, but if I met him in the pub I certainly wouldn’t ignore him

He does as little as possible, in his own words they pay him half wage, he’ll give them half a day’s work and troll the forums the other half

And they pay him £750 PA more than me

They offered me a wage rise this year

An extra £500 PA

I’ve been working my ass off for the last year for this

It doesn’t even bring me up to his level, I’m still £250 PA less than him

I just think that after 15 months they should know my value, either pay a decent wage for a decent job, or when a job comes up that does pay, then I’m off, till then I think my colleague has the best idea

I mean, after all, they pay him £250 PA more than me

WTF

18k PA would take my name off the agency employment lists

I can’t see it happening, I reckon 16k maybe 16½k PA if I’m lucky

I’ve got another ten years to pay on my mortgage, two kids going to college, crap

I’m doomed

The good stuff is I’m now a granddad

On the 20th October 2011 my daughter gave birth to a boy, Sean Edward Harty McGrath

Spent a weekend in London recently for his christening

A ray of sunshine on a rainy day

Agreed. Very much so.

Tbh, for the skillset you have and the work that you do, the pay is well well below even the industry standards.

Jeez, even enlisting with an agency to contract to places will get you a heck of alot more than that. And they WILL find you positions as they get finders fees etc.

I'm suprised they can keep hold of both of you on that kind of cash if I'm honest.

get a really good CV sent off to some online IT recruitment consultancies. not just local, but UK-wide.

you will get so many offers, you could pick and choose

My boss is back off sick next week, he was really ill

Don't know when I'll get a meeting with him, but I need to chill out before meeting

Don't want to be too pissed off when it happens, despite this it's a young, growing company and that's rare

My name is on a few agency lists but I'm not gonna take any chances till after Christmas

Will update if something happens

Got to work on my roof now, F1 weekend as well
