Radeon 85000 cooling fan question

Giving my machine a good clean ready for the New Year I notice that the fan on the above is not running, also it is rather stiff, and does not spin freely. I realise that this may be characteristic of the fan, but don't know. :o It is not giving me any trouble, but should it run continuously, or is it temperature controlled.

Oh shit where can I get a Radeon 85000??? Is that the new uber pimpstastic bench slayer card? ;)

I don't know much about how ATI's cooling system works but if it's anything like nVidia's it varies by speed but can be enabled to run full speed all the time which is what most of us gamers/benchers do.

my 8500 radeon's fan runs constantly at the same speed, tried to use ati tools to make it variable but the drivers and apps were a bit bloatware. Looking to upgrade anyway as it's getting a bit long in the tooth now.

Be forwarned, my old 8500s fan jamed and them the chip melted in a game of cs:s (llwyd was using it). We were trying to see if it was a variable speed and just off, but it wasn't and then...yeah. Get some extra cooling going just in case is my advice.

He was playing CS:S on an 8500, that really WAS an achievement ?!

If your 8500 fan has gone, I'd suggest rooting around in the cupboard for some old P2/P3 fan or something - shouldn't need THAT much cooling.

A P2/3 hs and fan choped up provieds great cooling appaerntly. Im not to chop mine up however as i mite sell my old p2 setup if cash gets tight so i havn't tried it.

Yea, get it cooled as best as possible if you dont want to end up ripping it out and charging through the house to grab a bag of frozen peas to shove on the heat sink like i did (but alas, it was too late, it had cooked)
