Racing Games

Hi everyone,

I am a fan of racing games more than any other type. I am fairly new to computer games though, as I have only just got a computer capable of playing them at decent fps. Also I prefer simulation types to arcade.

I know TTL is a racing fan, so if you happen to see this I would be very interested in your suggestions.

So my question has two parts:

1. Which racing games do people recommend?

2. What steering wheel, pedals, etc. do people recommend?

Thanks,
Mark

Racing game wise. Depends on what sort of racing you like to do.

If you want a more relaxed unrealistic arcade style game. try NFS shift 1 & 2.

If you want something a little more realistic try Rfactor 2, Its not the full release yet just a very big demo with some mods already out. very good and realistic game. Even goes as far as to have the track rubber in after time and the likes.

F1 2011 is actually very very good, IF you have all assists off and have everything set to realistic.

Sim raceway is also a cracking game. Will be some great mods out for this game, Currently they have a 60-70s F1 mod circulating, Until you have driven one of those cars around Monzas embanked turns you haven't lived (in a virtual reality sense lol)

And then their are games like Dirt 3, Great fun game. A little unrealistic but if you just want a laghe is great.

Then if you are not fussed about graphics. You have Rfactor. No word of a Lie I have a 500GB hdd just for Rfactor it has that many Mods and tracks available. Some ranging from stupid to some damn amazing. Like the 76 F1 mod. he Tyrrell P34 is amazing.

then their is the best rally game ever made, Richard burns rally. the Group B, rally monster mod is second to none.

Then there is iRacing.............. Avoid like the plague. Its like a can of stella, You buy it and drink it because its expensive, and you tell your self you like it, But deep down you know its nothing more than an expensive nasty after taste.

Wheel wise. A favourite combination is the Fanatek Porch'e wheel paired with a set of G25/27 pedals.

The G25/27 are great wheels, solid reliable, and the favourite. Then their are cheaper wheels the OLD official GT5 wheel the Logitech force GT. Their is also the Logitech Momo, an old wheel now, but it still has a great feel to it.

I currently have a Thrustmaster T500rs, its a little on the pricey side. But it is one of the best. Their are also the so called Pro wheels. that retail for more than a grand. These wheels are stupidly expensive and don't offer you any more realism that a G27. But like a can of stella because its expensive you tell your self its better lol.

.

Oh yeah I totally agree ( he says as he prepares to enter a race ) :L

I thought that about iracing at first too but I have only spent £30 on it so far and I have nearly al the cars and tracks I need/want

Gran Turismo 5 is undoubtedly on the top as being one of the best racing sims out there. PC has a few too.

And Nissan is sponsoring another competition on GT5 were the TOP driver becomes a full fledged (REAL) race car driver for team Nissan. Just to give you a hint on how respected it is.

I wouldn't say GT5 is much of a sim as it is a "realistic" arcade racer.

What ever you say buddy. I am sure Nissan is looking for those who are good at arcade racers. Next Mazda will be recruiting those who have the best Top Run score. I own GTR on PC and in terms of accuracy, I see nor feel much of a difference and I am obsessed with racing sims, the only difference being some of the cars.

Agreed, Gt5 isnt that good imo. The single player is just a grind and very short. The multiplayer I avoid because I hate online multiplayer races because people will just ram you and squeeze you off the road instead of racing fair. You can race hard and fair.

Also the mazda Rx7 doesnt feel anything like a real one. Especially when you tune it. I tried to make one with similar mods and the car had 100hp more than what Id expect mine to make. In gt5 the rx7 is very snappy at the rear but mine on stock suspension was fine apart from the wet and even then it would slide rather than snap around.

I am currently playing F1 2011 and it is a fun game. You can set up the difficulty in various ways and you can make a real challenge. I am currently doing a Let's Play series of it and my challenge is to start from last in every grand prix.

if your doing it on pc, F1 2011, Rfactor2, Project Cars and even though its a bit old Race 07 is still a good'un

Yup F1 2011 is an awesome game. From time to time, i also play Test Drive Unlimited usually when i'm bored, prefer it to Test Drive Unlimited 2 which i think was a fail compared to the first, graphics weren't as good so wasn't the handling, too many multiplayer glitches, sold it the day i bought it. Still have my Race 07 copy somwhere, got it as part of a gpu bundle years ago

Gran Turismo is one my most favourite racing games, played and owned most of them apart from Tokyo Geneva. If only the whole GT series was on PC
