Well after nearly 2 years of heavy use my pioneer 109 has just died:eek: .

I'm looking for a replacement that is equally quiet (if not quieter), i hear the plextors are very silent - any recommendations?

I believe I am going mad. Mine is a Lite-On LH-20A1S11C - 20x DVD/CD Writer & Rewriter. It's SATA interface and it's pretty fast :)

No I haven't noticed it making a huge racket. Most drives make some noise when searching in my experience but this one isn't overly noisy

They`re all much of a muchness imo. 1 thing to bare in mind tho if u do want to keep it as quiet as when u bought it - keep dirst away from it by all means necessary.

No sticking gammy discs in it!

And be sure u`r case isn`t intaking air through the 5.25 bay.

My NEC is quite good (granted, its about a year old though). Certainly have heard a lot nosier :)

Either way, if you use a something like Nerospeed (IIRC thats what its called), it can limit the maximum spin up of the drive, stopping the majority of the noise.

IIRC it also has the options for different speeds based on the data the disk has. For example, DVD-Videos can set at a much slower speed than normal disks if you like.

Sorry to almost chnage the subject.. but I am interested in why you are looking for such a quiet drive? :)

Don't mean to be rude of anything.. just interested.

Well the machine is very quiet, it doesn't emit much noise at all. It's mainly a media machine. I watch a lot of movies on it. I've had drives in the past which can be heard seeking/assessing during the film which i found irritating.

I can drown this noise out to some degree by turning the movie sound up, but that defeats the purpose, as i prefer to watch my movies normally with the sound level low.

Oh, Okays! :)

Seems a pretty good idea to me. I hope you find the right drive for the job!

I find my NEC drive to be quiet - my rig is out of the case atm, i can hear HDD access over dvd access! My HDD's are quiet too!

I think it is all relative.

Have you sought out noise proofing and rubber, y'know - anti vibration stuff... Here

Sound proofing your case will help eliminate noise :)

If you get a Plextor you can tweak the settings to try make it quieter.

^^^^ strange isn`t it. Not many people look beyond standard windows detected software/drivers for opticals.

Many of the utils`n`stuff have firmware upgrade tools built into them too. Helps compatibility issues and cache probs and so on.
