PS/2 Vs USB

Ive been wondering about this for a while now but and searches (all be it half hearted) have yileded nothing. At the moment ive got both my mouse and keyboard in the PS/2 sockets. In game i get quite a sluggish responce from my keyboard (this dosn't matter too much or supprise me as its an office keyboard my dad nicked from work) and my mouse seams to stutter a little and generaly not be very responsive. My mouse is a Logitech Wireless optical mouse @ what is supposed to be 800dpi.

If i plug the mouse into the usb port as opposed to the PS/2 will it sharpen up?

It may help switching to USB but I don't think PS/2 is going to limit the data transfer rate enough to actually experience the problems that you described.

It sounds like you just need more processing / video power mate. What game is making everything so sluggish? I know that when I'm playing EQ2 in full screen mode with all of the details turned up that my mouse and keyboard lag a considerable bit during major spell casting events.

Well i wrote a guide regarding this back in clan days and i am sure it still works and answers your question very well.

I ll write the guide here again but for now just a little information.

PS2 sampling rate is 40hz at default and 60hz in windows. USB default sampling rate is 125hz. By using USB version please keep in mind you are adding extra cpu usage. So when your cpu usage is high in games your mouse may move / behave strange.

So what is sampling rate. Its how often windows updates the pointer or action from mouse and it has a latency. so 125hz is like 8ns latency until windows updates movement from your mouse.

So you got the idea , yes this means much better response from your mouse when u use it on higher numbers.

Like 250hz (4ns) , 500hz ( 2ns ) and 1000hz ( 1ns ).

You can also change the ps2/rate to 200hz by using a small utility.

As Tec said, the USB polling rate is a lot higher than that of PS/2, but PS/2 can be increased as can USB. The advantage of PS/2 is that it doesn't use the CPU, and therefore should be smoother, and there are reports that increasing the polling rate of USB has killed the southbridge. If you have a gamers mouse with a high dpi, its better to go with USB.

Hmm, plugging it into the USB made no difference. Nither did the logitech software (rubbish). I think ill try llwyds raptor m1 in my rig next time we lan and see what thats like.

If i need more CPU or video power frag, theres somthing dam wrong. Im only running 1024x768. Not like 10million by 5million or whatever your cinima screen uses.

I get it in CS:S and Oblivion (the only two games i have installed atm).

Could it be because im now using dual monitors?

I think it's just your rig lagging due to high video/cpu usage during gameplay... I dont think switching parts will help but you may as well give it a shot.

Cordless mice do have the odd lag problem, but it shouldn't be that noticable. It isn't 2.4Ghz interference from wireless networks is it?

You may be right, i get a little choke on cs wen playing on my lonsum, 7 bots. I would think its the bots 'thinking' if this is the case.

But it only happens when i move the mouse atall. If im wondering round not looking about its dosn't happen. Same in both games.

Ill find out if its interfearance by using llwyds M1. If it is better atall ill get an M2.

Well you can see if its ur cpu usage when u use ur mouse. Open task manager then performance monitor , while u r on performance monitor , just move your mouse around in fast motion , doing circle , or just go crazy , and see if ur cpu usage hits high.

Edit .. This is on when u r using usb version tough. The machine i am testing right now is Athlon XP 2200+ and doing what i said above jumps cpu usage to 50% and over.

The CPU usage only goes up to 11% when switching between monitors, but on a single (like it used in game) its at 4% (MSN, firefox, ZA and my networking apps running) if the mouse is moving or not. So i dont think its that. Enless perhaps its thinking the mouse should be on the other monitor when its not? Ill try disabling my other monitor and playing then.
