new office new desk design and build

Usually adding white to any colour desaturates the colour entirely. better to use primary colours to achieve the ones I want.

Perhaps if you want to get your orange, you need to go with an 80/20 at least of orange/white but that probably makes the point of mixing tigerseal moot if it gets broken down so much that the finish is no longer as smooth.

Sorry for the delay in replying guy's it was a rubbish end to last year with my uncle being taken into hospital Christmas eve and he only just got home this friday so plenty of things to do for him at the moment and to make it worse it would seem some kind person has tried to poison the dog :cussing: she is back home now but is still far from a 100%, safe to say its been far from a good start to the new year and trying to find time to get anything done at the moment is hard.

Very smexy.

I might get back into MDF this year. Fancy a couple of things made.

Cheers, hopefully ill manage to get it finished up this year although it could still be very slow going.

MDF is useful but the edge grain is a nightmare to paint as it just soaks up all the paint and stays fluffy. i still have many project i need to get done with it though including a fully kitchen make over and quite a bit more in the office with the printer cabinet, feature wall and shelving still to do.

Yes true but having a choice of white, grey or black tigerseal i thought white would have been the better option and knowing you can tint it with 2k direct gloss i thought it was worth a shot but basecoat being so much thinner it would take to much and im guessing that then all the adhesive properties of the tigerseal would be lost which is wanted to use it for gluing the plastic windows in. i could just paint that area with the orange paint and then use a clear adhesive to glue the panels in or just stick to leaving it grey

Skim the ends with bondo, glaze, or JB weld.

sorry for late reply buddy been having a mad time of it as of late. yes its an option but need to be careful as MDF sucks the resin out of filler and can cause shrinkage

not manage to get anymore of the paint done because the weather has been a bit on the wet side so all the progress has been on the office/computer room itself.

i did not really document it as i did not think anyone would be that interested due to this being a computer based forum but i did grab a few photos that ill post up

first job was to fit a new double glazed window (the seals had gone on the other one and on windy days there was a rather large draught) so once that was done i also plastered the last wall in the office which covered the small gap that was left around the new window (between the new window and old plaster)
SIzajEg.jpg

next job was to latex the floor to remove the 10mm difference from side to side
rPXBwvN.jpg

rdMQvcc.jpg

then with that done it was on to making the storage on the other side of the room. I may remake one of the cabinets so i can get my printers in there and not just sat on the side (its to narrow by 50mm for the A3 printer to fit in) and i also went with a curved cabinet on the end which i still need to try and make a door for which could be fun

full size drawing of the curved cabinet just to get the curve right
P4954A8.jpg

all the cabinets in place but no doors
FCPZC4f.jpg

also pretty happy with the scribe cut to wall :D
k6kq0XU.jpg

finally the doors were made and hand pulls routed in to them and they all on soft close hinges

this is the profile for the handle pull
OWrqIfx.jpg

tomorrow i may have a bash at the curved door and making one cabinet a bit larger for the printer

Printer and storage cabinet is now all in paint. the top surface still needs to be flatted and polished and then the whole lot lined up and screwed together but still waiting on flooring to come back in to stock.

CsvsKe1.jpg

last coat on the pc cabinet and right hand seating area also went on today so should be good for flatting and polishing soon

Wow, that looks fantastic!

cheers guys. im hoping the image that i have in my head will start to come alive very soon.

well after leaving the printer top to dry for a few days ive flatted that back with P2000 and polished up again.

left side is first stage polishing and the right side is the P2000 scratch marks
1gmrDa2.jpg

after the finial stage of polishing the top now has some life and not dull from the over spray.
H3MZaJT.jpg

shot of the lot, ill try get some shots of the layout inside but could do with cleaning it up a bit first
lrhueQW.jpg

i tried for a reflection shot but the downlights dont help on the top surface (guess that will be more of a day light one and night time will be more reflections in the doors and face)

pc area to flat back and polish up tomorrow and/or sunday

Been a while since i lasted updated anything due to a nightmare with trying to get a new oven, long and sort of it is im now looking at 9 months with an oven that has a busted door or wait the 9 months for a replacement with a kitchen thats falling apart but has a working oven.

but anyway between spending hours on the phone i have managed to make some progress on the desk and room (feel this has now become a bit of an office make over thread sorry)

i cut some 140mm strips from a sheet of mdf to glue up to make a floating shelf
TVqjSeQ.jpg

lw9VRIE.jpg

while i was waiting for the shelf to dry i dragged out the first flat screen tv i even bought as a few months back it had stopped displaying video from any of the hdmi ports so i needed to get that fix as i needed a 32 inch tv for the office, looking at new tv's they all seemed to be hd ready at this size now and not 1080p so i thought ok ill save a few quid and repair this one but first i needed to give it a clean as it had some plaster dust on it and some pva glue.

before
i4DE5Gj.jpg

after
wrsjInJ.jpg

with that done and the tv parts ordered up i then set about doing one of the jobs i was not looking forward to which was repairing the pop up socket that fits in the printer cabinet, this came with damage to the top of it (nice scratch and scuff mark)

so sanded that out and then put some adhesion promoter on the plastic
kTN27zm.jpg

followed by two thin coats of white highbuild primer
S7zM7l2.jpg

then flatted it back with P1000 before putting on 3 coats of orange basecoat
ddelxUN.jpg

then one tack coat of clear followed by 3 full wet coats of clear
6KYFsYf.jpg

gives you an idea of the pearl effect, the camera does not pick it up to well, could just be my phone i guess
hrCd7bc.jpg

sorry it's gun finish as its still not been flatted and polished yet

i then had the great joy of putting the socket back together again after about 5 hours the paint was pretty hard. this was no fun job at all as if you did not get all the piece back in the right spot nothing lined up and you could not push the centre ring down to open the socket but after about 2 hours i managed to work it out (think really i just got lucky and all the bits lined up)
lN4fgzn.jpg

laid in the hole until the top gets screwed down
nm8dSVA.jpg

and opened.
UIcrfkN.jpg

after the socket i got the lid for the computer compartment in primer after i cleaned up the rebate for the led stip lights to go in, only the underside got primer again as the outside never got touched. I also cut and primed the infill that will sit at the back of the lid to cover the 100mm gap to the wall
Ra39bV6.jpg

with the lid dried and flatted back i wanted to get the left hand side seating area and the lid painting all in one go so i had to get the old thinking cap out and work out away of suspending the lid in away that i could get to the top and bottom in one hit. the thinking cap came up with the idea of using my normal wooden painting blocks with some 60mm 18g brad nails hammered halfway in to them and the nails would sit in the rebate that housed the plastic in the lid.
z50pkBu.jpg

E7y9MkG.jpg

this should have be a bonus in the fact the outside of the lid should be dirt free.
h5sVX2h.jpg

osHVeWf.jpg

RM2vyqT.jpg

lid dried and refitted waiting to be flatted back
VHohPpg.jpg

pnqSgaO.jpg

then today i had to get another coat of primer on the infill/cover panel as the edge grain was still fairly rough.
BliNkSe.jpg

also cut, routed and primed the other primer shelf
k3pg4II.jpg

also primed the shelf
the long part of the shelf
Y4Enx6k.jpg

the shorter part of the shelf was a nightmare as it managed to fall off the table on to the deck to which some grow up words may have been used.
now has some nice corners that look like they have been chewed by a T Rex
B4Nf37W.jpg

XE5LZ8a.jpg

SWGPdcc.jpg

e743aUE.jpg

guess some filler work will be needed now

the shelf is now in guide coat just hanging around drying
kPbr24Z.jpg

finally got the plastic for the front panel. its a little on the short side to be fair and its not been cut very square but it does just about fit.
61swYOv.jpg

still has the protective plastic on it for now

spent half hour with the sander removing a small amount of plastic front the top plastic so it would now fit again
POjRqqX.jpg

bavYW9v.jpg

just trying to work out where i want to cut the fan holes in the front panel or if i should just leave them out and intake air from the rear leaving the hot air to find its own way out (gives a cleaner look to the front). any thoughts on this people?
mjy9SZL.jpg

iqCyLgR.jpg

as soon as i have worked out what to do with the fans ill remove the protective film and then glue the plastic in, i can then get the inside of the desk cleaned out and the pc fitted back in there and then start to think about buying another pc and parts for the rest of it.

im sure you have worked it out but the desk is not lined up as yet and some parts of it are sat on the carpet while others are on the concrete floor. these wont get lined up and fitted properly until i get the flooring and get it down.

Amazing. That's going to be a serious cave when it's finished dude. Love the attention to detail on the orange bits too.

cheers buddy. Yes im liking it more and more with every step so far but im very much looking forward to it being finished to sit down and enjoy a couple of drinks and many gaming hours :D

thanks the idea started out as i was going to paint anything import or that moved on the desk front and printer cabinet, so that the door handles would have been orange, finger pull on the pc area compartment etc but i thought no it would look to busy so im now planning on maybe mirroring the shelf on the opposite wall, shrinking the shelf design for the opposite wall or building 2 or 3 motherboard/GPU display cases and hanging them on the wall and painting them orange.

i also put some colour and clear on the other printer shelf and pc compartment infill piece
DDS9M6T.jpg

lkaVRf3.jpg

i also flatted the smaller piece of shelf back after it took a fall and put a second coat of primer on it.
nAnPPnJ.jpg

rHAeJpK.jpg

lImUwd7.jpg

then after the primer had gone off i put some guide coat on there and im expecting this to need another coat of primer
fuqlxbO.jpg

Managed to get a little more done

started blocking the shelf to get it ready for some colour and found its got a nice low spot in the middle down the whole length of it.
5xNHong.jpg

vyiwLAT.jpg

Kbl7MEA.jpg

wYJOjge.jpg

not sure how well it shows up on camera but you might be able to make out the guide coat still left in the centre and the bare MDF on the edges. its had another coat of primer but im not sure how mad i should go on it getting it 100% flat as at the end of the day its wood and you can pretty much guarantee its going to move about so it will more than likely get colour tomorrow.

took the sander to the walls to get them ready for painting
RW7gr1V.jpg

VXnhkN1.jpg

JD825zZ.jpg

walls have now all had first coat colour and what a nightmare it was. also the paint is colour matched to the desk (ill let you judge how close you think it is) and i wanted a silk finish but its matt which is a bit of a pain as if you touch it it marks.
m8lILeV.jpg

jnZ4Xmj.jpg

it was still drying at this point so some bits are lighter than others

desk is now sat on the floor as i flatted and polished both seating areas up so its all lined up a little better. im hoping once the room/computer is done i wont be needing to get the infill panel out to often as its not very easy.
H0AfPQP.jpg

m575zWE.jpg

making sure the shelf still fit after sanding and filling the wall, also started to fit the vesa mounts to
TH7Kvmx.jpg

and speaking of vesa mounts this was a pretty tight fit and all the time i was putting it i was praying the cable went straight up and not off on a random angle but lucky all turned out just right.
p0BtOUc.jpg

also while i was doing some bits to the printer cabinet i found a second use for the adjustable bevel
q3D5toY.jpg

fitting leds in the bottom of the printer cabinet top to light up handles
eyo7OuF.jpg

m10oyEM.jpg

quick test of the leds which will be switched and located in the drawer of the desk. the cable for the leds will run behind the skirting board under the radiator and around the back of the desk but i forgot to drill a hole in the scribed panel for the cable to go threw
q0u1On7.jpg

Ce0z2ua.jpg

this was with the pc monitor on and the leds only
this is leds only
bGps0Nz.jpg

well thats a few more jobs knock off the list of things to do

It'll be nice once it's finished :)

The paint mirroring is nice, shame the plexy was short but maybe you can think of a way to extend it unnoticed.

Thanks buddy, im starting to like the way its turning out now although it been a fair amount of hard work to get here

yes it has a good reflection to be fair but its also a very large dust magnet and needs a daily wipe over at the moment, hopefully once the room is done there wont be as much dust in here and it will be better and only need a wipe over once every two days :D
yes the plexi was short but i did make sure i ordered it over size as i know they wont do anything about any damages to the ends up to 50mm so all was not lost but id rather get what i paid for

shelf got flatted back to P1000 ready for some colour
wjEJHwX.jpg

first up was 3 coats of white basecoat
ARhpiGf.jpg

first coat of burnt orange basecoat
1FGwFiZ.jpg

4 coats of basecoat down
LhOUW3m.jpg

4 wet coats of clear down

back indoors a few hours later where it is warm to hang around and finish curing

will still need and flatting back and polishing up but for the next few days its all good.

should have a new pc monitor turning up tomorrow but i am already thinking about returning it as its only a 1080p monitor and getting a 1440p monitor but i only ordered up the one to see what it was like.

now the only real jobs left to do are final coat of paint on the walls, find and fit flooring, get some skirting board, sort the drawers out and then new computer time
