Processor upgrade?

I've currently got an i7-930 paired with a noctua d14 overclocked to 4.2GHz, but when i go to uni i'll need to upgrade for 3d rendering and stuff, I need to stay on 1366 as i can't afford a new motherboard (Although i'd love to

)

I'm thinking about the 980x, but it seems that all the 1366 extreme processors up to the 990x are roughly the same price atm, i'm not too sure what to do.

Any advice would be great

Sell your CPU and motherboard and then buy 1155 + i7?

with the 930 you're not going to see a crazy difference when switching to a higher CPU on the 1366 platform.

Switching to the 1155 platform wont give you huge speed differentials but will allow higher clocks and at cooler temperatures, just an all round better experience compared to the 1366 platform.

Just take into consideration your building around a platform that is un supported in the nature of future proofing, once you spend big bucks on the 990x you will be left with it and it will drop in price massively over a short period.

But with the money your spending on the 990x why would you not consider a platform switch ?

Sell your 1366 motherboard for £60-80

Sell your cpu for £95

Money from 990x £350-500 (i dont know the going rate)

Do the math

Well how about swapping to 2011 then? I'm not rejecting the idea of 1155, i've been thinking about it for a while, but since the likes of the 3930 and the 3820 being released i'm more temped to get a good 2011 board, lower-end 2011 CPU and upgrade when they get released.

Personally I would look at 2011, despite you mentioning not affording it you are looking at spending a large amount of money on the processor when you can get get a mid range 2011 board something like the Asus P9X79 Pro and 3930k and some RAM and you have got yourself an awesome rig with lots of CPU power for your rendering. If you sold off your old parts I am sure the difference in cost would be comparable to spending a large amount on upgrading the processor alone on your current kit. Also the newer kit is going to be worth more in the long run and your not going to be putting your money into an older platform which has been replaced by 2011. Hope this helps

I would suggest 2011 but i don't know enough about the platform through experience

But from what i have read its a worthy successor to 1366

Thanks for the help guys, i'll consider 2011 i think, 3930k has been looking very attractive for a while. I'll see what happens when student loans/grants arrive and how much i can save over summer

If you just wanted a swap out a 1366 hex can be had on ebay fairly often for sub £400, ive seen a few go for £300-350 including a 990x, there is a 970 for £380 and a 980 for £390 up at the moment buy it now.

The only performance gain your gonna see on 1366 is by getting a 12 thread cpu,,, to expensive in my opinion.. your also not going get much higher than 4.2 on a d14 due to temps... Actually looks like tom got his hexacore to 4.7 4ghz with temps not exceeding 55c but i suspect he had a hand chosen cpu for the review that could run on low v's.....

I assume your talking about the original 970 review on here? Where did you pick 55c from? and tbh... 1.225v isnt that far below average for 1366 4ghz on non original stepping chips, slightly bellow yes but not super special.

And anyway that was at 4.0Ghz, so not in the way you stated originally no. Plus that would have been on an open air test bench so add to it for it being in a case environment.

Airflow in modern cases is pretty good nowadays,,,, but with a high spec proc like that and his unit being in a work environment I'd recommend a h100 p/p for sure... The d14 tom was using in the test must have been kicking out some db's ....

The d14 is... well.... everything EXCEPT for loud... period, unless you use different fans on it but then that point is a moot one regardless.

Lower volts mean lower temps than a lower clock, raising the clock speed adds minimal heat compared to extra voltage, so even if the 990x was at stock on that voltage the temp drop would be minimal.

My 970 with 1.15v @ stock hovers around 55c at load, in my case, under my d14, in a room with a HOT ambient temp, with the standard fans on it at 100% and the only real noise is coming from my case is from the my graphics card as its fans blow down directly onto the pcb of the card.

Probably around 93-95 on a test bench, as it got either 90 or 91c on a 950 at 1.45v in the review oc3d did. (i could be wrong as im going from memory but im 95% sure that was the result.)
