Playing Darksiders, crashing/choking/freezing

No clue if anyone has played this or not. I had been meaning to for awhile and finally did. It's quite enjoyable, up until I get to the first official boss "Phantom General", I kill his 3rd, sometimes 4th summon, and get a complete freeze. If I go to task manager says "is not responding".

I've read online I guess the game had issues on PC, and was somewhat unstable. I have the newest catalyst drivers, updated the game, direct x, you name it.

All the trouble shooting guides have been no help.

The game plays 95% smoothely up until that point, random lag spike here and there, but nothing worth noting.

I know the PC is in need of an upgrade, but should've been able to run this at least alright, i figured a couple of lag spikes in heavy fights.. but not this.

Guess I'll try a clean install of the game, but replaying the first 30 minutes of a game over and over gets old.

I don't think it's the game as I don't have any issues with it and a friend already beat it. So yes, it must be something else.

I believe I figured out the issue..

The hard drive it was on just recently COMPLETELY crapped out, 100% dead.

Up until that point it was having issues already with bad sectors.. and after a defrag last week it decided to die completely.

Sooo, I'm thinking that since I kept crashing at the same point, it was attempting to access one of those horribly bad, almost near end of life sectors.
