Pentium anniversary build

Ever since Intel announced the anniversary Pentium, I've been dyeing to do a cheapish build for mainly getting used to overclocking, and for a basic streaming pc.

So today I bit the bullet and set about seeing what I had lying around, which wasn't a lot, actually only 2 things my 240 Monsta rad, over kill I no, but waste not wont not, and an XSPC dual combo bay res. The next challenge was budget , I didn't have a dime, so into the shed and loft I went, dug out a whole load of tat, and a decorators table, and got t local kids, to get there pens and paint out to make a few garage sale signs.

After about 4 hours, I had a budget, £450, not bad for what was only taking up well needed room, and just sat their doing diddly sqwat. After giving the kids a fiva each, I was left with £440, to play with.

My list of things needed was everything, really, I liberated a 60gb ssd, out of Black Hole Sun, that was being used for for the sake of not wasting it, I'll add a mech next week when I get some more cash, an OS is sorted, I've got 7 and 8 nocking about somewhere , and keyboard and mouse I have also got.

Here is the list of goodies. The only thing I need to buy really is a mech drive, and a graphics card, but my tat ran out, sadly, it would of been nice to fund the whole build from an afternoon, of off loading my junk. Never mind I've got a garage that needs a clear out, maybe I'll get of my but, and have another pop on the weekend.

Gigabyte Z87M-D3H Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 Micro ATX
Intel Pentium K Anniversary G3258 Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail
Aerocool Dead Silence Gaming Orange Mini Tower Windowed
BitFenix Fury 550W Gold Modular Power Supply - Alchemy Cables
TeamGroup Vulcan ORANGE 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit
EK-Supreme LTX - Acetal CSQ Intel CPU Waterblock
Alpenföhn 120mm Wing Boost 2 Plus PWM fan - Orange x 2
Alpenföhn 140mm Wing Boost 2 Plus PWM Fan - Orange
Monsoon Hardline Acrylic Tube 1/2 X 5/8 (16mm) 4 Pack - Black - 4x30"
Monsoon Free Center Hardline 1/2 X 5/8 (16mm) 6 Pack - Orange
Mayhems Pastel - Orange Coolant 1L.

That little lot came to £440.60p so just 60p over budget you can't get better than that, in all truth it is the closet to free I think I'll ever get.

There is nothing major, going on mod, wise, the only change will be extending the single front drive bay, into a double bay, for the res. Unfortunately, I was just a little too late, to get next day delivery, so Wednesday it is.

Why not mate, apart from yours, I haven't heard of any more. Hows the pentium holding up under water mate ? Aren't you also using a Monsta 240 ?

I'm enjoying all this pentium love lately. An unlocked Pentium was definitely a master stroke from Intel.

I'd love to be able to have one of these babies to tinker with, same goes for Kabini I'd love to see if it overclocks. The amount of people who only need a PC for Minecraft, easy to run indie games and browsing, these pentium chips are perfect.

I'd totally do it but I know that I would over do it so I am going to restrain myself for the moment. I want a 350D with a 360 monster and Maximus VII Gene though, would be banging. Maybe even take an mITX approach but radiator! lol, gotta be bigger than Barnsleys.

Right so the build has changed, I sorted the f10 bios for the Gigabyte board, but when I put the board into the case, I noticed it had a very big bend in it, so I'm waiting to hear from OC'ers about an RMA. When that is sorted, I'm going for the Z97 Gryphon armor edition.

Also i'm no longer using the Monsta 240, as I couldn't use the first pci-e slot for the gpu, down to a clearance issue, plus now that I've ordered the Sapphire R9 270x Toxic addition, it needs to go into the first slot, whereas I was going to use one of my HD 7950's under water added to the loop.

New spec list.
Aerocool Dead Sdilence M-ATX
Intel Pentium G3528
Asus Z97 Gryphon Armor edition
Sapphire R9 270x Toxic
2 x 4gb sticks 2400mhz Team Group orange memory
Bitfenix fury 550w
2 x Kingston 120gb Hyper x 3k ssd's
180gb Intel 335 ssd
256gb Samsung ssd
60gb OCZ Agility 3 ( this thing just wont die )
Cooling

Hardware Labs Black ICE Radiator GT Stealth 240 - XFlow
XSPC Raystorm cpu block
Koolance pmp 500 pump
Alphacool LightTower All In One Reservoir
Monsoon free center fittings for hardline tube orange
Monsoon 16mm Hardline tube black

A few idea I've got for mods, are, on the Gryphon it has camo in a few places like the chipset, and rear io panel cover, and also the ram slots are cacki so they all need to be changed to either black or orange I'm undecided yet, I might even stick with the camo theme, but in orange and black, I can make a template easy enough. Some sort of light effect in orange under the motherboard, and box in the section under the motherboard tray, possibly a light box ?

I'm not going to upload any pictures yet, the inside of an empty case isn't exactly thrilling, updates to follow.

You might be thinking over kill but, I made a big boo boo, when installing my 4670k into my main pc, and tried to be clever buy putting it back in, with the case still standing up, and in near darkness with just my phones LED for help ( My living room bulb has blown ) I was major carefull, or so I thought, I re connected the loop, and went to turn her on, only for the fans to spin then stop, so out came the cpu, along with 2 pins from the socket, and the one corner of the cpu is bent, so I the motherboard is dead, but I'm unsure of the cpu. The contacts all seem to be perfect, all I can do is test it. So although it might be overkill for a Pentium, this at least for now, is going to be my main machine, until I can source some more cash.

I'm waiting for a couple of fittings then it should be good to go! I'm just using a UT60, a monsta 240 wouldn't fit where I want to put my rad

I feel you mate, I have the same problem, the Monsta will fit, but I can only use a single slot gpu, in the bottom slot. It doesn't leave much room below it, this is my first try at M-ATX, and it has it's obstacles to over come. I've got my pair of 7950's under water, but I fancy a new gpu plus I'm looking forward to a more simple loop.

I have finally been able to make a start on things as 90% of parts have arrived, just waiting on the res, acrylic, and some other odds and sods, and of coarse the motherboard RMA, that shouldn't take too long, then I can get the Asus Gryphon armor edition. And get cracking.

The plan so far, is, if there is enough room beneath the motherboard, with the Gryphon's armor is to place a small piece of clear acrylic all around the motherboard tray, and light it with orange LED's, if there isn't room, bellow the tray were the cables go, I'm planning on boxing it in to hide the pump, and other uglies, so that will then be a kind of light box type effect with smoked acrylic.

That will be the mods for now, until a can decide on what to do about the front panel, I'm toying with a few ideas, but nothing solid yet.

It's all going as mentioned, into an Aerocool Dead Silence M-ATX case, I did,'t include a pics as it's in bits at the mo, ready for a few cuts, for the rad to fit up top.

No idea yet mate, I haven't had a chance to play with it, the motherboard had to RMA'd so I'm waiting on that to be sorted, hopefully this week, the problem is the alternative is out of stock, and as far as I no OC'ers are the only store with the Z97 Gryphon armor edition. They must be selling loads last week they got through 10, then between Friday and today, another 5 have sold.

A little update, so far I've got the rad and fans, rear and front fan in place, and added a filter for the rear and front . With having the rear fan on intake, I had to think of something to get around the ugly back side if the fan so I bought a metal mesh filter, and mounted it using the fans orange rubber mounts, And I think at least, it looks pretty sweet especially compared to the back side what would normally be visible. That's it for now, I need to get cracking on the lighting under the motherboard, but at gone half eleven, I can't do any more for tonight, so updates to follow.

Another update, I've painted what needs painting and they've had a good 36 hours of drying time, so I can start getting the good stuff, installed. As I thought the Gryphon's back plate, is too thick to allow for the 3mm acrylic, so back to the drawing board for that idea.

Up until now, the motherboard, cpu, and block, and the graphics card are in, as well as their cables.

I've decided, on a name for the build, mainly because of my balls up with my 4670k, I've decided on, Black " OOPS " Can a mod please, re title the thread title, thank you.

Things are coming along great, all is in bar, the plumbing, which I may or not start today, I can then make a start on the acrylic work, to hide the nasties.

I did manage to get it finished but didn't like the outcome, there was just too much orange on the case, and I couldn't find a decent location for the res, or pump. So I stripped it down, and ordered a few new goodies.

The front panel is way too orange, plus there wasn't much air flow from the front 200mm fan. So I ordered an E22 stainless 240mm fan grill, some black paint and a pair of LED SP120's, the case and front panel now need to be attacked with the Dremel but should be easy enough. Along with the grill because of the front drive bay cover looking knaff, I also got a Skythe flat fan controller, I usually like the fans set with reducers, but this case needed something up there, so I'll see how I get on.

I also have a problem with my psu not powering my pump, very odd, so O bought another, that connects directly to the Light Tower res, the only place for it to go is in front of the front fans, so a piece of the motherboard tray also needs attacking with the Dremel.

That's all for now, I'm off to prep the grill, they come buy the looks of it straight of the laser cutter, so there are a few rough spots to file and it needs a good sand before paint.

A little progress with the front panel and grill, I'm going to order a 2nd to go inside to match. I'm now in the process of cutting down the rear of the fan controller because of the rad fittings, and luckily the pcb is only connected to the fan controllers surround with 4 screws as that needs to be relocated too.

Those orange nuts are being swapped out when my knurled thumb nuts arrive some time next week

On top of that i need to order some black acrylic, to use under the motherboard tray to hide all the cables and drives, I've used some smoked as testers pieces but it's see through, or I could even just spray the reverse side in black, it might look pretty cool, I'm also going to use the same acrylic to blank of the front honey comb mesh just to make it look a bit cleaner.
