PC Store Rip-Off

I'm not trying to be a d**k but i can see it from your friends dad's point of view.

PC shop, mans invested a lot of money and time and does this for a living (even if he is ripping people off, most of them do).

You - kid. (sorry)

I was doing just the same as you when i was your age and had the same problems with parents who thought the tower of a computer was the hard drive.

His dad would rather have the security of paying over the odds and letting mr pc man build it rather than you. Building PCs isnt hard, getting some one trust to you with there hard earnt cash is. Good luck, but i susspect you need to convince him of your abbilities to build it rather than the specs.

This is what happened to me when I was around 14 years old and people would ask my dad to build it for them, and he would always mention that it was me that would do the building etc and they always looked at him, as if he was out of his mind.

When they then saw my pc in photos or at the house they changed there minds every time.

Where I live we have a small computer shop that is ran by 2 guys, and I went in there one day and asked for a price on a system with watercooling etc, just to see what the price would be and if it was £20 more than where I normally buy my stuff from then I wouldn't have said no, but when they came out with a price that was £450 more I just laughed and walked out.

The issue with shop's that are small and usually ran by 2 or 3 people from the same family is that, because they generally don't have that much business they struggle to get prices for components that other retailers can get due to, bulk buying discount etc so those little shops will always cost more.

i was up there on sunday i dont wana be at white hart lane or seven sisters for a long! time

Yeah, I plan to get out of here as soon as possible...
My parents did well to even get me here, but I need to do the rest of the work and as they call it ''get up outa da hood'' :p

I had the same problem, i just made a little cheap pc to show my abilities and that not only gained people's trust but probably got me more people asking for builds :D

Hiii everyone ! I'm the 'he' in this thread :) The computer is being built for me and the whole situation today was very confusing and quite immature from the shop and the people who have been building computers for 14 years x.x The guy wanted to throw in a bulldozer and a sabertooth asus mobo... Firstly, it is out of budget. Secondly, there is no possibilities for upgrades if I got that. I am currently on £440 and I know that shops like that will build me a computer worth £400 and take at least £60 for themselves... Thanks for all the help :)

Hi everyone :)

I'd just like to say, I've put this in the rants section because I haven't got much nice to say...
I recently specced up a £500 gaming PC For my friend. It consisted of :
- i3 3220
- 7870 Tahiti LE
- Asrock z77 pro3
- Cx500
- 8gb vengeance

Now, his dad wanted to get a second opinion on the PC, So he went to a little PC Store around the corner, where he was told I have no idea what I'm talking about, and he could build a much better PC For £400.
Me being me, I decided to go to the shop today after school and try and talk to the shopkeeper, and find out what his ideas for this build were, convinced he couldn't do better for £500, or anything around that
I come in, ask him what his ideas are, and he looks at a little 16 year old, who, in his mind, knows nothing about PCs and proceeds to argue with me for 10 minutes about how I should just buy a 7970 "if I'm so clever" and that a 8-core "bulldozer" is better in gaming than a i3 (Which is NOT True - Yeah, piledriver gets close, but NOT Bulldozer, AND It's costs more, AND It uses MUCH More power). Next he asks me "why a corsair PSU?" And when I tell him it's because they're basically the best, he laughs and then starts shouting, not giving me a chance to ask "so what's better then?"... He then ends the conversation by having the CHEEK to tell me to research "INTEL"(!) in google...

Now, I want to show my friend's dad this thread, so that he won't buy a crappy PC From this guy... So help me out here guys, am I really an idiot..?

yeah sounds like some shops ive been in i have to say i used to be a amd fan boy back wen thay had the 1090 and 1100t but everything after that is just junk sounds like the shop is just trying to sell old new stock
i dont buy a lot of parts online as i hate paypal
if it helps any try haveing a look at yoyo tech thay have an online shop aswell as a shop in windmill st w1 ive found them very good thay have almost everthing you could ask for watercooling mobo,s cpu,s thay do the lot and best of all thay have a sell or return deal from who ever thay get there stock from so thay dont try and push people to amd or intel

i live in tottenham i think i know the shop you was chating about its right buy a 34 bus stop just off fore st ?

Nah mate, the shop's in Northumberland Park, about a 2 minutes walk from the last W3 bus stop....
If you know where Lea Valley is, Imagine getting off a W3 when it terminates, and then heading towards Lea Valley...

I'm now starting to imagine that all of these little shops are basically rip offs, all trying to do the same thing x.x
Is there anywhere to go where you won't get ripped off, but can talk to someone face to face..? (In London)

Why i am recommended for building PC's privately....

Customers in a PC shop 9/10 times have no clue, and it is terrible what BS the owner will tell them if they are inclined that way.

well i dont think its just pc shops ive worked in two model shops and we used to get people comeing in telling us what a good deal thay got of ebayor off some online shop then i had to tell them what junk thay have in there hands

i know what you mean recon ive seen that sort of sales pich all over place
thats why wen i find a good shop with good back up i keep going back there

i had a similar experience when i went to pc world looking for a solid state. full of hope that they had some corsair units only to be told that they are rubbish and OCZ are are brilliant..... it makes me wonder what rigs the people in these shops actually have

Yh that sounds about right mate. I hate it when people in shops try and push into a certain brand. The thing that annoys me most is that most of these people who work in big chain stores eg. Pc world... Is that they more than likely dont even care about computers and dont know anything about them. Its just a job to them

Trying to flog old stock, exactly the same reason they tried to tell me Corsair's PSUs are rubbish xD
Just learn not to go to these places :)

i know that well i used to work in a shop were the owners tells me what to push then i try to tell them it junt and i dont want to push something as i know the custmor will bring it back and be unhappy with it but at the end of the day there are lots of people working in shops that would do anything to keep jobs even lie about what something can do or not
