PC Speaker recommendations

Hi!

What would you choose if you were to upgrade your PC speakers

This thread will be used as inspiration b'cause I'm looking to buying a new speakersystem set.

Criteria:

- Must be 2.1 (My desktop envoirenment doesn't allow surround speakers)
- There is no budget
- There are no limits in size (Semi-big/big satelites much prefered)
- Wireless connection is a wish not a must

Primary use:

- Gaming
- Music
- Videos/Movies

What would you go for?

If you want a nice set of PC speakers, the Corsair SP2500's are very good. Great sound, surprisingly loud and clear. Since they are limited, no distortion regardless of how hard you drive them :)

How will these work on a ROG Maximus VI Formula? I've read they'd need a dedicated sound card to function proberly? :)

Have a look at M-audio AV-40s.

You're better off with monitors rather than 2.1 as the sound will be more evenly balanced.

A soundcard would help with pretty much anything you could buy, so something like a Xonar DX is worth a look at too.

Klipsch Pro Media 2.1 Absolutely phenomenal sound system, but you wont get the most out of it unless you get a nice sound card. The Corsair is very nice as well, but the only thing it has over the Klipsch is the bigger woofer. Other than that (owning both) the klipsch paired with a nice sound card sound much crisper and cleaner providing better mids and highs and a better punch in the woofer than the Corsair. The Corsair just has a really deep low bass but not a punchy one desired for music.

I ran mine off of the Xonar Essence STX

I have the feeling you guys have no idea how to customize a EQ setting. I have the speakers sounding bright and punchy.

It can only be "so good". A real sound card will destroy any "EQ" setting you currently have. I can't even describe how much it can make a difference.

lol, any half decent sound source shouldn't need EQ to be screwed with to sound good. If you need to tweak your EQ, your source or your speakers, or your sound card.. something in the chain is shit. End of story.

If money is not an issue look at the Nubert nuPro A20s ;). You probably have to import them from germany though.

As to soundcard versus onboard. There is no doubt that a quality soundcard is superior to average onboard sound, probably very good onboard sound, too.
But declaring every onboard solution is shit, excuse my language, seems to be a bit narrow minded, not to say elitist.
Keep in mind not everybody has the money to fork over 160 for a stx. I know the OP said no budget in this case, but people tend to generalize.

As to equalizers it's all personal preference. Even high end equipment has equalizers on them. I wonder why that may be. Having said that I too prefer a clean untempered with sound.

because people like to say it has one mostly... if the source and gear is up to scratch it shouldn't be required.

Unless it's unavoidable I would stay away from small 2.1 setups. Smaller 2.1 setups typically have fundamental lobbing issues (among others), meaning it's easy to tell which sounds are coming from the mains and sub, this is due to inappropriate driver selection by the manufacturer, poor crossover design and poor room integration (to put it simply).

How big are you willing to go? How much are you willing to spend?

Personally I don't care much for EQ. True uncoloured sound is what everyone should be aiming for, turning off the EQ settings certainly helps in that regard.

I'd like to see what you suggest. Like I said, no budget :)

It sounds like I would need a sound card to deal with the new speakers. I have no room for it inside the case, so what would you guys suggest for a good external solution?

Can't really make suggestions without a budget mate. There's so much stuff out there I could quite easily just recommend a £5000 + setup. How much experience have you had with high end audio in the past? Do you perceive yourself to have keen hearing and the ability to distinguish the nuances of different pieces of audio gear at similar price points?

Without a budget I don't know where to start.

How would you go about with 500£?

If you're looking for a truly balanced and analytical sound, I'd be saying Xonar STX + Studio monitors (KRKs or Behringer Truth)... or if you want a more more ''fun'' sound I'd be saying STX + speaker amp + bookshelves :)

Agreed. Would personally go for the STX + Monitors as I prefer the actual sound of music over lots of bass in music and games. Studio monitors will still be more than fine for gaming though :)
