PC Speaker recommendations

Agreed. Would personally go for the STX + Monitors as I prefer the actual sound of music over lots of bass in music and games. Studio monitors will still be more than fine for gaming though :)

Ya I just plugged my Edifier HCS5640's back on and I could hear how music drowned in bass.

I'm not the biggest expert on sound but how would active studio monitors compare to speaker systems like the SP2500? Will I get the same quality in games or will monitors be better?

For £500 I would go with something like a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 or M-Audio Fastrack (around £100), or even something from Fiio for external soundcards. Then a set of monitors such as the Equator D5's (£400). Alternatively you could go with Yamaha HS series monitors or KRK Rokits (around £300).

From my understanding studio monitors are made in mind to sound "flat". Meaning they are designed to sound equal in all regards of sound. Now speakers such as the sp2500(or other similar products) are designed to be overtuned/undertuned( i think that's what it is?) and therefore they end up either giving heavy bass or only highs- they favor one frequency range over another.

I am probably wrong. I am not an audiophile but from what an expert told me "flat" is what is correct and gives off the best quality sound. He was a member of the forums but i think he is inactive now.

It's not necessarily about the quality of the sound, more the accuracy. Monitors are designed for accuracy and so to most people they will generally sound slightly dull. Hi-Fi speakers are indeed tuned to have a different frequency response in order to perceptively sound "better". It's really up to personal preference in that regard, however imo I prefer accuracy over Hi-Fi.

EDIT: on topic for the thread, monitors for the same price will more than likely give a "better" sound quality for the price than the corsair speaker system. However they wont give so much of a bass end as the sub will and so will probably not work so well for movies and cut scenes.

Studio monitors give a fair representation of what the music SHOULD sound like... an easy contrast would be something like Beats By Dre, which have a massively ''colored'' bottom end, meaning they have lots and lots of very loud but not very detailed bass. Studio monitors are made for music producers to be able to hear exactly what their music sounds like, without any of that dreaded ''coloration''. Usually these monitors are very very detailed too, which means you can pick up tiny intreancies in songs you wouldn't otherwise notice.

As for an external sound card, the problem with Fiio products is that they're very much geared towards the headphone and portable market, which usually means they aren't AS good at running speakers in general. What you're actually looking for is known as a ''DAC''. This is basically an external sound card that do normally sound very, very good and are (in my opinion) preferred because of the fact they're external, they negate any electrical noise going on inside your PC... had massive problems with this with an old xonar DX.

EDIT : Having said all this, I actually think you should go DAC < Speaker Amp < Bookshelves, since you're looking for something for movies and gaming, not just exclusively music.

Okay, so I'm back with a response!

Thanks for all the inputs. I've been searching for all of them and it all sounds nice. I'm actually prepared to go for monitors and I've fallen in love with this:

SWAN M100MKII

Asus Xonar Essence STX
(I don't think links are needed, you guys know your soundcards :))

Only thing is I want a subwoofer for my monitors. Being a douche at sound and connections etc etc I don't know if it is possible to hook up a subwoofer for the M100's. Do you guys know if it's possible?

Bowers & Wilkins MM-1 speakers, I have them, they deliver great sound, doesnt take to much space, very high quality highs and delivers punchy bass. I strongly recommend them. If you are willing to pay £400 for the speakers that is. Or if you want to have bigger speakers go with the Rokit KRK 5s, they deliver awesome sound for the money, but remember to get a 2x TRS to 1x minijack cable. I only recommend speakers I have experience with, and these two pairs are amazing altho I think the MM-1s could been a little cheaper, but cant expect B&W to sell cheap audio equipment can ya :/
