PC not posting from cold

Not sure if this is the place but here goes sorry if its not I'm new

I've been having this problem recently that when ever i leave my pc for around over 2 hours off when I turn it back on I have to do several restarts by the power button then when it has booted it runs fine all BIOS and drivers are up to date

Any help would be great

You said this started recently, have you made any changes you can remember such as changing any drivers installing new software or any thing you did hardware wise.

Also what kind of screen do you see after you try to boot-up after 2 hours, is it just a solid black screen, can you hear the components work (fans, hdd).

Finally when you do go into your OS, does everything work normally without any problems or do you experience errors/blue-screens etc.

Just trying to establish the fault, narrow it down and then offer solutions.

ive had upgraded my GPU to a Zotac GTX 460 SE 1GB thats when the problems stated and yes the HDD spin up fine along with all the fan and the GPU fan spins at 100% until it post and runs normally but to get it to post i have to keep restarting it via the power button in the case, also the screen is blank and remains in stand by mode again until it posts. once i get into OS its perfect with no blue screens or errors, and if i restart the system is shuts down and boots fine. its just when its left for some time
 
Have you tried resetting bios to default values,and see if that alleviates any problems?

Also try booting with only 1 stick of ram at a time,and see if that helps.

The bit where you mention about the screen being blank could well point to a memory problem,with no signal to monitor.

And also the fact that a new gpu has been added could imply a power problem,ie not enough juice?so you,would really need to narrow those things down.

With the new card did you use onboard graphics previously?, if so make sure that your pc is set to run from pci-e rather than internal graphics chip in the bios settings.

ive reset biso before loads of times with no luck i shell try with 1 stick of ram tomorrow i am prety sure that the PSU is ok for power it is the xfx pro 650W and if only about a month old

and i did have an old pci-e card and have removed all drivers and software with it, and ive checked the bios there as well and is all fine

so yer i will try with 1 stick of ram tomorrow and will post results here

right i have tried with one stick of ram (both sticks in both slots) and still not working also when i tried this morning i stared it up and could not get it to post but the fan on the GPU did slow down and was not running at 100%

ive now taken the BIOS battery out and left it unplugged until i get back from school then i will try again

im wondering if the motherboard supports this new GPU as the last BIOS for it was last year!

Wouldn't of thought the mobo bios could interfere with the gpu bios. PCI devices are like another seperate computer
 
Did you also try booting with the stick you took out,on it's own?,reason i ask is if there is a faulty module and you took the good one out,you will still get the cold boot.

Do you have a spare power supply you could try,just to rule that out also?,if not take your psu to a local pc shop,who should be able to test it for you.

I would say it's the power supply myself,as i said in a previous post,just because the psu is new,doesn't mean it's not faulty,as they often get shipped dead these days.

Also annother thing you could try is this:

make sure pc is off,then turn off by psu switch,then try to turn pc on by pc power button.Your fans will spin momentarily and it will release any dissapated charge in the psu which could also be preventing a boot.Turn psu back on then try booting.
 
I know this might sound daft, but have you checked the power cables to the GPU are connected properly? Have you tried the GPU in a different slot (if you have another)?

i tried with both sticks of ram in every possible way still not helping and i get no boot i do have a spare power supply but it was not enough to power the new GPU hence why i got the new PSU. ive done the discharging trick and it never works i have left it all unplugged today with out bios battery in and will try it again later
 
i have been reading a lot of forums and most people have said they have fixed it with a new motherboard i think i will try the GPU card in a friends pc to try to rule that out but i mainly think this is a compatibly problem

i have checked all the cables and used the other 2 PCIe power cables and still same problem i dont have a different slot to try i think its time up upgrade motherboard

yes it is the xfx pro 650W with 53 Amps on 12V rail

TBH i think it is a motherboard issue

im wondering if because i went from ATI to Nvidia that might affect it but i dont no
 
Try taking the power cable out when you turn it off and see if it boots up fine after that

Hi All

got home today plugged power lead and placed biso battery in and tried to boot but again no video and fans where where acting like they where before (GPU fan @ 100% others normal)

tried with other old GPU and found same results as with the new card but took less restarts to get it to boot

old card - ATI Radeon X1650 Pro 512mb new card - Zotac GTX460 1GB SE

now in the process of striping it down to look at the different components in more detail and by first looks at the motherboard i can see a capacitor which looks a tiny bit bulged at the top

i think that when i boot from cold the motherboard is not sending enough volts, amps... to the PCI-e slot this may also explain why it will boot fine then restarting the pc

as the GTX 460 requires more power that why i think it is taking a long time to get it to boot

EDIT

ive found 4 capacitors which are dead one has even popped open and leaved its insides all over that part of the board xD

i think its time for me to try to replace them or get a new motherboard and i might go for a new cpu as well any recommendations for the following price ranges

Motherboard - £80-100

CPU (i5 or AMD's version of the i5) - £150-200

im pleased its not the GPU or PSU as they are very new

but really have no idea how the PC was running on that motherboard lol
