Paypal Hacked?

Hi Guys..

Wow.. I'm fuming at the moment.. got back from cousins all day.. went into my e-mails.. see two PayPal e-mails.. Spam I thought.. looked at them and they seemed legit.. two transactions to two accounts for $750 and $500.

Logged into my PayPal and it's actually happened! ****!

I called my bank.. cancelled the card linked to account and also made disputes.. have I done the right things? Any tips.. I also rang PayPal and they said they can't do anything at this point in time as I've already made the disputes.

I am gobsmacked.. I knew something like this will happen to me sooner or later. Never had a bad thing for PayPal.. Cancelling it all together after this is sorted (which I hope it will!).

Thanks,

Jake.

Just be honest, remember to keep all your details. If you're all legit you should get your money back without problems with PayPal. Just learn next time that you need to keep information like that secure. Security is important, change password every couple of days or weeks. Never use the same password for different things. (I made a forum and I didn't like this guy, got him to register, he did and used the same password as his website. I logged in and his mothers credit card details were on there. His MSN was also the same password, all I did luckily for him was change his display name and background on his website.)

well thats a big mistake fella using the same password, there are alot of hacks for paypal and all you need is your e-mail address.

you have spoken to the bank and cancelled everything so you will just have to wait it out

It's been resolved by PayPal and they are 'refunding' the money in the next 5 days. Nothing was taken in the first place.. but alteast I know it's been sorted.. now I got a cancelled card :/

At least it is sorted and not cost you nowt.

I never use the password I use on forums or even any other website for accounts which involve money. Most of my passowrds for normal use are straight forward, but for the ones which involve dosh are fairly complex eg. CapiTa1=L3tteRS! that is just made up but would take a long time to crack even more so for random letter groupings PiKl0Xtub as these do not show up in searches.

Only other thing you need to worry about is keyloggers now

This happened to my mother recently. Not with Paypal but with her main credit card (Mastercard).

I'm pretty sure it was a dodgy website and I am pretty confident I know what one. I ordered some PC parts from a site I had not used before. All it takes is one corrupt employee and the damage is done.

However, taking note of what I said above always use a credit card for internet transactions . A debit card is not protected because at the end of the day they can only take your money . With a credit card they are taking the bank's money and thus the bank will strive to protect itself.

If you absolutely must use a debit card then make sure you don't leave too much cash in that account. Paypal can only withdraw what you have and your overdraft. Once that stops they will not get any more. I keep no more than £50 in my bank account, the rest is all in a savings account. For big purchases I use mum's CC and pay her the cash.

Some more advice. If you come across a rogue buyer on Ebay (Hint : if you sell stuff you WILL) and he starts to make noises or file a claim GET TO THE BANK and empty the account. Then, cancel any overdrafts you may have. Paypal can only snatch money from a bank account that is there. They can not take any more.

Recently a few of my friends have been hit by the "partial refund brigade" opting to give back some money as the item was supposedly not working correctly. However, why would you want to fork out a couple of hundred quid (even after the partial refund) for something that does not work? DEMAND THE ITEM BACK.

Three weeks back I purchased a cylinder vacuum for my stairs. It was a cheap one and supposedly an 'as new store return'. I buy a lot of these because they're usually half price. I got a QVC 7 day returned Oreck XL vacuum for £90 delivered.. They're £240 on Oreck and QVC. That has been marvellous, but this cylinder I got smoked on first use. On closer inspection it was broken inside. I know it wasn't shipping damage because the box was pristine, so he had sent me it that way. I told him an hour after it arrived and he said send it back. I waited in for his courier for two days and nothing, so I phoned his courier myself and apparently he hadn't even booked a collection date.. Finally it went back and then, quelle suprise ! there was nothing wrong with it..

Cue some arguing, cue him slagging me off.. File a paypal claim. He had no legs to stand on and I sent the UPS tracking number, job done. I am just awaiting them to process the snatchback.

Just be careful. Ebay is full of faceless spineless scammers.

Update:

Well, I didn't cancel the direct debits on my account and one transaction went through for £481.99... ****.

Rang PayPal and they said it's been reversed, because of the dispute I made and should go back into my PayPal account as early as tomorrow, or as late as Tuesday next week. As soon as this happens (which I hope it does).. it's going straight into my Bank account again and PayPal is saying goodbye!

Its about time places like ebay/paypal started taking security seriously and employing some form of challenge response system.

- Enter username/password

- Unique pin code gets sent to your mobile phone

- Enter that

Absolutely removes any chance of someone hacking your account unless they have access to your mobile - in which case they are prolly friends/family.

Yeah or something similar to the Barclays card reader, requires your card, your pin, account details and your surname. My bank has nothing like this.

The problem now is that paypall is so easy that more and more websites are opting to use them as payment methods. But paypal still do not bother working on their security.

Blizzard has better security for their games FFS! You would think Paypal would at least give people the option of 2-factor authentication. At least they use SSL

You can turn on SMS txt authentication for Paypal.

For passwords I use PasswordSafe.  KeePas and Roboform are similar.  Allow you to create and securely store randomly generated passwords.  All use at least 256bit encryption.  All you need to do is remember one strong master password to access the password list.  I carry my PasswordSafe around on an encrypted partition on a USB stick.

Here's a list of this type of app: Link

Barclays card reader sorts everything out. Works for me, my dad even my gran who may have to use her glasses to operate the goddamned thing but at least her money's safe and sound.
