Opinions on Windows 10?

Seeing as MS are letting people upgrade for free from legit versions of Windows, I'm considering upgrading Alpha to Windows 10.

Any advice/opinions/experience from people so far? Is it worth it over Windows 7 (current OS)?

Cheers guys :)

From what I've heard people don't like that they've got no control over windows updates and the security options that come with it.

I've been on win 10 since launch and yes it has some flaws, i don't like that i cant adjust the theme like you could in windows 7, there is a lot missing for custom themes. I personally don't find the updates annoying, it never updates when i'm doing things on it, and it being forced does not matter to me, i got a free os, why would i moan about it when it performs so well?

I do think the security is a bit on the low side, mse has always been a anti virus thing that doesn't monitor live things, it only looks for stuff already on the hard drive and as such, id suggest getting something with a bit more protection.

As for gaming, so far i think it is pretty awesome! I haven't noticed any real problems, i know win 10 shuts the door on old drm protection things like starforce and others like it so some games wont work, but there might be a way around that, i haven't looked because, yeah old games, i'm busy enough on newer stuff.

As far as i'm concerned, its a good deal, i just disabled as many of the privacy options and i did not login with my email when it asked me to, because wtf, but otherwise, free os, free support till 2020 and it runs like a dream.

To me as a gamer, it is absolutely fine.

No, I hate Windows 10 to me Windows 10 is just a hybrid version of Windows 7 & Windows 8.1 also for me Windows 10 doesn't boot any quicker than Windows 7/8.1 and the biggest one is NO FREAKING CONTROL OVER WINDOWS UPDATES, For me i'm staying on Windows 8.1 i don't care about DX12.

If it was a choice between DX12 or Windows Updates, I will be taking Windows Updates.

Keep telling you. It's easily fixable. Kinda need to just let it go now. Windows is now "Windows as a service" meaning it'll continuely be upgraded/updated/evolving, it's not a purchase anymore like the pervious ones where the biggest update was a Service Pack then a new OS. There probably won't be a new edition of windows but rather a massive update adding new features or being able to update parts of the OS to a newer DX13 for example. You'll be on 8.1 forever.

Personally I am a huge fan of 10. Hated 8/8.1 and stayed on 7. In comparison you get much greater speed and it's just more modern. I don't like the privacy stuff but as it can be disabled and stopped it's more of an annoyance that goes away after dealing with it. Security settings aren't that bad if you get into the control panel(not through the settings, that part is limited). But I use a proper AV suite so not a big deal. One other annoyance is the "OS bloatware" where it installs all the apps and games but using CCleaner it gets rid of all of them. Using UWT4 for advanced settings is really helpful too and can stop the auto updates if you really want to make sure.

I've done plenty of upgrades on old laptops and semi new ones and a different gaming PC. So far the only problem I had was on a semi new Asus laptop after updating it and installing printer drivers it quite literally went to ****. Had to reinstall and since then it's slower than before. I suspect the driver I used was infected even though I scanned it with 2 different AV(bitdefender/malwarebytes). But no issues with it now except speed.

I'm not re upgrading i know plenty of people who aren't upgading either they don't like Windows 10 even some of them don't even like Windows 8.1, They have told me they are sticking with Windows 7.

And i have said to what is stoping Microsoft releasing an update again that will go into and change the settings you have done, They have done it in the past and they will do it again.

Once again i'm not changing i'm happy that i'm on Windows 8.1 it does everything that i want so why should i go back to Windows 10, I'm getting fed up with people in general trying to shove Windows 10 down peoples throats.

You simply just disable it again dude. Literally took me less than 30 seconds to get it to stop. And the simple way of doing it has been available since the start. You just need to turn on "metered connection" and it'll never check for updates to prevent using excess data. Whether you have a cap or not it works. And if anything you can further ensure it does not happen by using UWT4. You can get fed up but maybe you should open up and realize it's a simple fix that you are making sound like it's impossible? It's a better OS hands down. You keep saying 10 is basically 8.1.. well then why not upgrade? It's basically the same thing right? It supports DX12 and 8.1 does not and if they are the same, it has an advantage over 8.1.
It's up to you in the end ultimately but it wouldn't be right if you keep telling everyone NO FREAKING CONTROL OVER WINDOWS UPDATES on the forums when the opposite is true.

The update in Windows 10 is different then it is in Windows 8.1, I don't like the way how the way updates work in Windows 10, There is no drop down box in Windows 10, like there is in Windows 8.1 where it said, Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them, That is what i'm talking about things like that.
when you say It's a better OS hands down that is your opinion/point of view, Why can't people understand everytime a new OS comes out not everyone wants to upgrade or when they do they use it for a bit and don't like it and want to downgrade.

Have i ever said to people not to upgrade to Windows 10 if they want that's fine i'm only give my opinions on it which i'm allow to do in the long run it's up to the OP if they want to upgrade.

Aye I loved 8.1 and 10 is growing on me, the easiest way to be satisfied with 10 IMHO is:

1. Install or Upgrade (let it register before you try changing options)
2. Install any missing drivers
3. Disable all the sharing crap
4. Disable the update services (not the control panel way but in the admin services options)
5. Disable Defender (again via admin services)
6. Grab a copy of Malwarebytes and an Anti Virus (optional)
7. Install all your software

then hey presto no more problems, should a future program require an update you can grab the KBs from MS website.

N.B if your having customisation issues or no access to the theme options it's because the OS isn't registered properly as they are the same options you get with windows seven.

I'm liking 10 been using it since it's alpha and beta to full release and it's fine, is it perfect.....no but then again what is and you get it for free so what's not to like

I've upgraded to Windows 10. Had some faff with installing dx9 but apart from that its been great.

Didn't really like Windows 8 - much prefer this

Windows 10 has been completely junk in my experience. It has all the worst bits of 8/8.1 and 7 combined together.

I really like Windows 10, Works well, no issues that I have come across that are deal breaking. Only 2 things I look for in an OS; 1/ Everything works without having to jump through hoops and 2/ Stability. Windows 10 offers both of these.

Windows 10 was kinda bad at the beggining then the November update came in and fixed some stuff...
I still can't decide between 10 and 7 though although little has changed once you make a god mode folder.

I've heard mixed things about Windows 10, but seen quite a few "How to stop Windows 10 spying on you" articles come up in my facebook feed, the solutions to which seem relatively straightforward if you know what you're doing.
Of course God Mode would still be a thing :)

My main concern is compatibility; sure you get the advantages (?) of DX12, but how many of my games are still going to work?

Side question: does anyone use Windows Defender packaged in Windows 10? I hear it's come a long way since the days of Vista...

EDIT
Then you have the Pro and Home versions. From what I can tell, Pro has more control over things like Windows Update. Any other differences I should be aware of?

Yes Pro has more control over updates, but the best way is to set it to a metered connection which can be annoying when you start Outlook and it reminds you that you are on a metered connection but stops all updates until you want to do them.

I have put all my computers to Win 10, I advise most of my clients not to as software compatibility issues are not worth the upgrade when you are in a business environment.

Also be careful on older pc as I have upgraded 2 computers and put back as they ran slower than on Win 7, but these issues are to be expected on new OS and old hardware.

I hope Barnecules can come through with his video idea. He plans to strip and open up the packets being sent back to Microsoft to see what they are actually collecting.

10 is not bad, but it's going to take a year of refinements. Everyone compares it to a10 old OS that has fully matured. I'll keep using it unless it's revealed that they are data farming very specific identifiable information.

Love it, Everything works, No problems with drivers minus a few Nvidia ones which were buggered but that was Nvidia's fault.

Games run great and everything is smooth :)

Holy moley these are mixed opinions... Should I really go forward with it? O_o

My only concern is the privacy thingy and updates relations to privacy. I don't want then to collect personal info about me, it's none of their business
