No, I hate Windows 10 to me Windows 10 is just a hybrid version of Windows 7 & Windows 8.1 also for me Windows 10 doesn't boot any quicker than Windows 7/8.1 and the biggest one is NO FREAKING CONTROL OVER WINDOWS UPDATES, For me i'm staying on Windows 8.1 i don't care about DX12.
If it was a choice between DX12 or Windows Updates, I will be taking Windows Updates.
Keep telling you. It's easily fixable. Kinda need to just let it go now. Windows is now "Windows as a service" meaning it'll continuely be upgraded/updated/evolving, it's not a purchase anymore like the pervious ones where the biggest update was a Service Pack then a new OS. There probably won't be a new edition of windows but rather a massive update adding new features or being able to update parts of the OS to a newer DX13 for example. You'll be on 8.1 forever.
Personally I am a huge fan of 10. Hated 8/8.1 and stayed on 7. In comparison you get much greater speed and it's just more modern. I don't like the privacy stuff but as it can be disabled and stopped it's more of an annoyance that goes away after dealing with it. Security settings aren't that bad if you get into the control panel(not through the settings, that part is limited). But I use a proper AV suite so not a big deal. One other annoyance is the "OS bloatware" where it installs all the apps and games but using CCleaner it gets rid of all of them. Using UWT4 for advanced settings is really helpful too and can stop the auto updates if you really want to make sure.
I've done plenty of upgrades on old laptops and semi new ones and a different gaming PC. So far the only problem I had was on a semi new Asus laptop after updating it and installing printer drivers it quite literally went to ****. Had to reinstall and since then it's slower than before. I suspect the driver I used was infected even though I scanned it with 2 different AV(bitdefender/malwarebytes). But no issues with it now except speed.
You simply just disable it again dude. Literally took me less than 30 seconds to get it to stop. And the simple way of doing it has been available since the start. You just need to turn on "metered connection" and it'll never check for updates to prevent using excess data. Whether you have a cap or not it works. And if anything you can further ensure it does not happen by using UWT4. You can get fed up but maybe you should open up and realize it's a simple fix that you are making sound like it's impossible? It's a better OS hands down. You keep saying 10 is basically 8.1.. well then why not upgrade? It's basically the same thing right? It supports DX12 and 8.1 does not and if they are the same, it has an advantage over 8.1.
It's up to you in the end ultimately but it wouldn't be right if you keep telling everyone NO FREAKING CONTROL OVER WINDOWS UPDATES on the forums when the opposite is true.
