old desk and new desk to be

im not sure if i have posted this in the right place. if i have posted it in the wrong place i am sorry

well the desk i am using at the moment is around 5 years old and has had quite a bit cut out of it in order to fit my full size tower in it and then i had to make another add on to put my network printer and laser printer on (altho i have moved the laser printer to a new room now) and add some extra storage. as you can see it looks a bit of a mess but has worked for quite awhile like this so i guess its not all bad.

photo of how it is now (i need to get some curtians but have not had time as yet)

The idea for my new desk.

The colours theme came from the way my room is painted and also the way i done my keyboard. i will be making the desk with a timber frame work and then covering the outside with MDF and this is for a few reasons which are 1: - the timber frame will give the desk its strenght and mean i can make it in separate bits (modular design) 2: - MDF will be used to cover/box the frame in because MDF is flat and can be painted easy enough. the colour theme will be white fronts with a gloss black top or i may even get the carbon out and cover it instead of gloss black (all paints will be 2K automotive paint. applied with a spray gun and flatted black for what i hope will be a very nice gloss finish) if i go down the carbon fibre route it will be a 200g 2/2 twill carbon fibre fabic that is used with a water clear epoxy resin. the desk will be in L shape form with dimensions of 570mm deep (i was going to go with 600mm and use kitchen worktop as the work surface but thought that would look cheap and be cheating plus the area i have to put it in is 570mm deep so would look better flush) it will also be around the 700mm heigh. the longest lenght of work surface will be 1530mm long and the other will be 890mm long

the desgin at the moment looks like this

Veiw one: -

veiw two: -

Lshapedesk2.jpg

veiw one detail list: - this is the longest side of the L shape desk at 1530mm long. parts from left to right are: - Seating area at 556mm wide, built in pc at 316mm wide and a 656mm wide cupboard. i wanted a 3 monitor setup on this desk but may have to settle for a dual due to the seating area beening tight to the wall

veiw one above desk: - im not 100% sure if i want this above the desk or if i want anything there (but i dont get much storage out of the desk) any ideas on things to do here would be welcome

veiw two detail list: - this is the shorter side of the L shape desk at 890mm long. Perts from left to right could be (im not 100% sure what to use this space for yet): - Seating area for a 2nd pc or writing place at 556mm wide and a second pc space (maybe not built into the desk altho i had thought about using this space for putting my server in but will have to see what happens) at 316mm

the built in pc compartment will have a plexi front and top so you can see whats inside and will also have no door handles or anything on the outside. i want it to look like its a sealed box and the main access point will be throw sliding the top surface of the case forward and going in throw the top side (the top surface will be on draw runners the same as whats used on kitchen draws and will have a pin located on the right side of the seating area hidden away to stop it moving around unit you want access) the front pannel will be removable but you will need to gain acess throw the top and remove two or four internal pins which will then allow the whole front piece to be taken off. i know its a lot of hassle but i wanted something different and also want a clean look with few handles and things on the front aswell as it looking like it was factory sealed in there. the pc inside will be water cooled and i may even make the top plexi the res for the coolant loop so you can look throw the water/coolant and see inside. I also want to hide the optical drive/drives out of sight along with any usb ports. i had thought about not using a optical drive and just using an external one when needed but im unsure on this as yet.

any input, ideas or things i should maybe try to include are welcome as i want to try and make sure i can upgrade everything when need.

altho i could do with some help on the lighting side as i can not make up my mind on what colour/colours to go for

umm - window!!!!!!

yes i will be having two plexi glass windows: - one in the front and one in the top on the work surface area.

while chilling out yesterday i had a thought about access to the pc and think im going to go do away with the surface area sliding forward to gain access and have it lift up on gas struts in stead. also thinking along the lines of making the locking pins easier to use by making them servo operated from a switch.

i also be looking for advice on a few other things

1: - fans. i need some fans for the case its self and of course for the rads

2: - lighting colour. at the moment im thinking of blue

3: - should i use dye in the water or not

nooooooo!

i meant, from the original picture, those curtains obviously are in front of a window

yet your design looks as if the cupboards will overlap the 'house' windows

lol

o dear lmao. what an idiot i am. the veiw is of some very nice trees

o right there is wall space on both sides of the 'house' window due to my odd shape room so the cupboards on the wall will be fine altho im in to minds if i should build them or not to build them as i think they might make it looks rubbish. and as for the lower ones they will fit underneath the window.

also this is the reason for the colour theme that i have gone with

close up with new smd leds and lights off. they are not very bright tho which is a shame. so at some point when i get time i might have to go back to standard leds like the Rev1 had

close up with flash so you can see weave altho it dose still need a flat back and polish but i need to get the leds for the screen

Nice concept. Kinda looks like a kitchen to me.

Why not have the chair space in the corner? That way you can have a 3 monitor setup.

yer thats one reason in not sure about the shelf unit above for. altho my computer design skills are not to sharp so that may not help things lol

i did not use the middle of the L shape for the reason that i will some times have to seat two people. but i think if i swapped the seating area and pc round then i could still use a 3 monitor setup altho the seating space may be alittle tight then. what would you say was a good size monitor to go with in a 3 monitor setup?

Oh. I didn't realize the desk would accommodate two users. I'm not too sure about what size monitor you should be using, simply because I haven't used a 3 monitor setup. My current setup consists of two different sized monitors (24" + 19") and personally I think that three 24" monitors would be too much screen real estate (for me, although I have never tried such a setup, so my mind can change

). If I was in your position I would get a single 30" monitor or maybe dual 24-27" monitors. Although, if the desk will allow it, three 24" monitors does sound quite tasty.

its a shame the desk has to seat two on the odd times.

i use a 32" tv at the moment for a monitor and thats not to bad apart from the fact when i first started using it the colours were so much different from my 19" samsung monitor (reds were more pink on the tv but im used ot it now) i do kind of miss not being able to watch tv and use the pc at the same time altho not to oftern with the lack of good programs on.

i thought picking a desk from a shop was hard now when building one there are some many options and things you can do its hard to know which direction to go lol. maybe a smaller desk over the other side of the room or in another room(even better) would allow for two people to use a desk at the same time and allow me to have more storage space and a three monitor setup

If you want the best of the best image quality, then you really need to get an IPS monitor or the upcoming PLS monitors. Dell have a 30" IPS monitor, which would blow your 32" T.V out of the water. It is pretty expensive though and you could maybe buy a different brand that has comparable picture quality for a fraction of the price (although, the overall build quality may be lacking).

There are definitely more options when building one yourself and you can make one that fits your needs exactly, which is the beauty of building one yourself. However, it does put you in a pickle in terms of which direction you should take.

im used to the colours now and that was the only real difference between them the image is still just a clear.

yer i think im going to have to have a rethink about my design but maybe first ask something about dual monitor and tripple monitor setup etc beofre i make my desk. input and ideas from other is really well worth having now as people have thought of things ive not and the last thing i want to do is have it built and then someone turns round with something i really wish id thought of and added but by then its to late to change

I agree. It's better to get a second opinion or two to make the desk as good as possible
