OC3D - Future of the Forums....

Yup, even when doing an short edit of ones post, it takes ages to actually save the post. Need to reload the page itself to continue.

Hey boys - just a heads up.

Due to not being able to get the original server hosts to reduce the costs of the server even though its only got the forums on it now - and difficulties trying to get the forums working on a new server (needs to run on old software) and it still work with new forums (basically cant have both in the same place)
we are going to have to switch the forums off for a bit.

Yes, the forums will be taking a nap for a little while.

I do hope to bring it back with some new forum software as and when time and finances allow.

:( Well that's disappointing.

Yeah, it is what it is. Hopefully the Forums will be able to return. There is no intention to turn off the forums forever.

Simply put, the server folks are being jerks. Their failures almost destroyed the site a while ago, and that is why the new version of the main site isn't hosted with them. Now they just don't care about us and are just making things difficult.

As it stands, we cannot keep the forums on the current hosts. Neither can we simply move the forums "as is" to new hosts. The only solution is for the Forums to have a nap for a while and hopefully come back later.

Oh well, nice while it lasted.

Take care everyone.

RIP OC3D forums

I certainly don't want this to be a RIP situation. Sadly, things just can't keep going as they are.

Sad to hear it, but as Dicey said above, was nice while it lasted.

Do you guys have some kind of an timeline of how long the outage will be or some way of knowing when it goes online again?

Thinking that some might eventually forget about the forums if not visited more frequently and not knowing if it’s back online or not.

Well this is a real shame but understandable, hopefully we'll see the forums back bigger and brighter than before.

While I could be entirely wrong, I've been on the net long enough to know a forum being "paused" means it's going bye bye.

There is no intention to make the Forums go away forever.

Going offline just reduces costs and should help create a budget for the new forums. Right now, we have different server hosts for the main site and the Forums. As mentioned before the Forum server folks are the worst, hence why the new main site uses a new host.

I know a guy who used to host lots. VB will know who he is (Pete Walton).

I have messaged him on another forum. Hopefully he will see it and may be able to help out.

Tom, if you receive a message from him it is not spam. VB will fill you in.

True and fair enough, although none of this gives any sort of indiation of how long it will be gone... A year is a long time, yet it's not forever. But in that time, many of the current users could have moved on most likely for example.

Yeah if a forum is down for more than a few weeks it can be basically be kissed goodbye when/if it comes back online.

Not going forever but to put a number on it the old server is currently costing me close to 500gbp a month and they wont reduce it.

The forums is old and runs on an old version of PHP so the old and any new one cant be on the same server at the same time.

Ive been trying to sort this for ages and well.... do the maths.

I want to try and sort it but I dont have many options
