OC3D Chat Box

I'm guessing as someone said before somewhere, if we had a chat box then members would be less inclined to post in the forums.

This ^^

When we had it before it took away a lot of posting on the forums. Quick questions were just asked on there rather than on the forums which isn't really great from our point of view.
 
I agree it's a shame there isn't one any more; I posted recently suggesting one, but got told the same reason.

It'd only work if there were rules against posting questions in the chat which were more suited to a thread, but all that does is increase the need for moderation, so it's just not practical unfortunately.
 
imagine the spam some people who are known to have the answer would get. the thing would have to be restricted to friends only and then it's kinda pointless.
 
i dont like chat boxes, when they are present one will when a bit merry wander in there spew some stuff, take the poop end of the stick & then get banned for being a silly drunken mess

I think that's where I saw the reason why we shouldn't have it.
 
What about just using a thread just for generic chitchat for people that are just sitting on the forums for a while? Can anyone see something like that working?
 
I didn't mean it quite like that. In the off topic forum for example you tend to start off a discussion at least related to something. I just meant a single thread always used by people who want it, just like it was a chat box or IM feature.
 
I get you now, I suppose that could work. And it shouldn't count towards your post count for people who want to increase it.

Yeah fair points about the post count and moderation again. It's just a shame there doesn't seem to be a simple solution, I'd personally like to chat to other members just to get to know people a bit better.

lol, good luck getting the post count thing implemented :p

A general chat thread is fine if it will be used. I think a forum thread about it makes things a bit formal which isn't really right for a general chit-chat thread IMO, but if you lot reckon you can make it work, go ahead.

Just make sure it stays as general chit-chat and doesn't end up getting mixed with things that should really be in other threads.

Moderating it won't be that much of an issue. We pretty much always have a mod online these days so if things did go astray it can easily be sorted, and of course you have the report button/ability to PM a mod if you do think something goes a bit far.

I thought you could do that with vBulletin. I know IPB and SMF has the option to disable post count in topics.

Meh, you might be able to, but to be honest it isn't even necessary really.

It's blatantly obvious when people are spamming for post counts and it's easy to sort it out anyway, not that post counts are particularly important anyway.

Yes. If we aren't allowing chat boxes on the site itself, we certainly aren't going to allow external ones advertised here.

It's a shame we don't still have an OC3D TeamSpeak running really. Might be worth looking into again in the future.
