NTFS vs ext4 help

Hi all,
I have an assignment for college where I need to compare 2 operating systems, and I have chosen Windows 7 (NTFS) and Linux Ubuntu (ext4).

One of the things we need to compare is the file systems, I have googled around but that has just confused me a bit, could someone explain simply what the differences are that would be great.

I would suggest going to wikipedia and reading the articles on "File system", "ext4", "ntfs" and "Comparison of file systems" in this order.
2nd suggestion: If someone writes up a summary on here properly thank him, because you have to really know your way around this stuff, if you want to write this on the top of your head, or you have to put a bit of work into it.

Also make sure you cross-reference with other sources as Wikipedia may not be 100% correct.
