Hi there guys needs some more advice, this time on motherboards. As some of you may know from my other topic, I am building a new rig for gaming. I have chosen a case but now I need some advice on motherboards. This is something I have no idea about so need advice on choosing my motherboard. Not really sure how much to budget for it so what do you guys think???

I am looking at a socket 1155 so I can take a I5 2500k.

I'v seen this kit on overclockers "http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-080-OE&groupid=43&catid=2053&subcat=2063" and I think it looks quiet nice, although like I say, I dont really know much about motherboards so what one shall I get?

Many thanks guys.

these are the two i recommend

gigabyte z68x ud4 gigabyte

or the asus z68 pro asus

they both are great motherboards and will be compatible with ivy bridge via bios update

the main diffrence is that the asus has uefi bios and supports onboard gpu on the cpu

and the gigabyte model has old dos style bios but gigabyte do have hybrid touch bios which runs on top of windows

i prefer gigabyte for high power-phase which is good for over clocking and i am building a hackintosh mac osx and it is more compatible with osx

ps these are best 'bang-for-the-buck value' mobos

The ASUS most likely won't be compatible with Ivy

Yeah that was one thing I was thinking. I wanted to get a board that will be compatible with ivy. Will the gigabyte do the business then?

Budget wise, I have allocated about 400 to motherboard, cpu and ram

Being a massive EVGA fan I would recomend the EVGA Z68 SLI mother board if you're on a tight budget. It is just under $200 as listed on the EVGA website and is not very expensive.

If you're not on a tight budget an plan on overclocking with a water cooling and SLI on water cooling I'd recomend the EVGA 268 FTW with EVGauge and the front panel PCIe power controler/CPU temperature reader.

I don't think you'll be going past 3 way SLI or will need the EVGuage/ front panel devices so I would stick with 100 dollar cheaper SLI version. You'll also have up to 3 PCIex1 slots.

I do not know if it will be compatible with Ivy though

What sort of video solution are you intending?

If you plan on onboard/ single card with a view to crossfire/ SLI then I'd say get the bundle you pointed to but change the motherboard to the P8Z68-V LX

if you want you can go for thus setup

gigabyte z68 ud4 link

gskill ripjawsz 1600mhz ddr3 ram link

intel i5 2500k link

all the above items will cost you about £350 so you will save around £50

you can spend that on a nh d14 cooler or a decent gpu, case etc

if your not sure you can ask others about this set up they will know more than me

I was intending on getting a single gtx 570. Btw why are the gskill ripsjaws so much cheaper then the hyper x genesis?

I'f you're intending to just get one 570 then the EVGA mobo I mentioned is kinda redundant with 3 PCIe slots. Also I just realized that there are no PCI slots on it so if you were planning on a PCI sound card discard my idea immediately.

that one i dont know maybe hyperx oc's better

they only on ebuyer for that price every where else they retail for £45 to £50

i got 16gb since they were cheap i know its overkill but looks nice

plus they have nice looking casing/heatsink and they fit fine under noctua nh d14
