New System Any Good?

In just over 2 weeks, I'm planning on buying my second PC to build. I have a preliminary spec below, so any thoughts/advise will be much appreciated :).

I have a £1k budget for the hardware (no more!), with high power and low noise as my philosophy (without going into water cooling). My aim is to try and keep whatever I buy pretty much the same (without overclocking) for hopefully 3 years, with only a memory upgrade at some point.

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 - £191.40 @ Scan

Asus P5N-E SLI - £76.13 @ Scan

HiperPower 670W PSU - £79.90 @ Scan

LiteOn SATA DVD+/-RW/RAM - £23.72 @ Scan

Geil 2x1GB XMS2, DDR2 4-4-4-12 PC2-6400 - £164.49 @ Overclockers

Seagate 250 Gb ST3250620AS Barracuda 7200.10 - £52.97 @ Shop Magenta

Gainward Nvidia 8800GTX - £357.19 @ Scan

Lian-Li PC-7 PLUS - £58.74 @ Overclockers

TOTAL = £1004.54

Since I'm pretty close to my budget, I'm trying to reduce prices too, so if you know of any cheaper prices for anything suggested, let me know :).

As for suggestions, I'm pretty keen to keep the 8800GTX (whether it's ASUS or not, I'm not too bothered), and the E6600, but apart from that, I'm open to suggestions, and may change my mind with the CPU and GFX if there's reason to.

As for the OS, I'm going for Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit OEM, and haven't found a better price than the one below. However, if people from the UK have been able to download Vista at the cheaper US price, then I'll go for that :).

Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate 64Bit OEM - £120.99 @ Shop Magenta

* Does anyone know of a cheaper black/silver case that'll fit an 8800GTX?

* Is the motherboard OK?

* Can I get a cheaper PSU without blowing something up?

Looking good aj.

The mobo is good so far at stock. But mine is being a c*** to overclock.

And for the 100000000th time, no. Spend as much as you can on the psu.

I had good luck OCing my 6300 (easy to 3.1Ghz) So I would go with that. Good memory, my Corsair XMS2 was over 1Ghz.

Ham is right on

RULE #1

Get A GREAT PS!

Check out Tagan, Silverstone,Corsair etc...

Hes not OCing mark:)

I mentioned ocing cos its

ing me off. But @ stock the board is doing good.

The P5N is good @ stock as ham said :) Not a great clocker but you aren't so u're ok

Looks a v.nice spec Aj, will do you well

Looks pretty good :)

Not sure why you'd buy your components from so many different companies and pay each one £5-10 postage tho :(

Could be a nightmare for warrenty if something goes wrong in 6months

Hopefully the 8800GTX will fit in the PC7-PLUS :)

No Overclocking going on

* I can get free shipping with scan.

* When I checked the price of the E6600 on ebuyer, there was free shipping for that item (don't know if it still is).

* The cheapest place to get vista is at shop magenta, so I'll need to buy something else with it since it's OEM.

* I can't find the PC-7 PLUS being sold anywhere else.

EDIT - the E6600 on ebuyer has dropped to £189.05, so it's at least £10 cheaper than anywhere else now :D.

If anyone can lower the prices in anyway, I'd be very happy :).

Does anyone know for SURE that the PC7-PLUS will fit an 8800GTX?

I'm not into SLI tbh. So long as that mobo's fine, I'm happy. Just that everyone's talking about the P5B which is a lot more pricey, and I haven't seen much about the P5N-E SLI.

Tbh, as I'm ove budget as it is, I'll probably end up sticking with what I've got, unless there's something else decent for a cheaper price (which I doubt).

If I had a bigger budget, I'd probably go for a P5B Deluxe.

Nah it's a pretty solid machine as it is tbh mate, we're just picky :p

Seriously that'll be great gaming, you really will notice a HUGE difference with whatever PC you have now, even if it's already decent

Why not get a Palit 8800gtx? currently going for £352 from scan today only special? Not any difference between the GTX's really (performance wise) apart from warranty length and different gamepacks, etc.

Also you might want to shoe horn a new heatsink in there somewhere like the tuniq tower or scythe infinti/ninja, they'll be alot quieter and cooler, heck depending on your case fans you might even be able to get away with using the ninja without a fan.

Also might want to consider a better psu, either paying a bit more for a 700watt~ or paying the same for a smaller 600w~ better brand model. The 600w Seasonic S12-600 is currently going for £82.24 from scan again and imo it's better than the hiperpower model.

Apart from that really you're gonna have a top notch system :)

I'm thinking about it, as I'd be saving at least £20 if I include delivery also. But will it drop further anyway in the next 2 weeks as we get closer to ATI's card being released?

That depends how much under budget I am at the end.

I'll probably stick with what I have for the PSU, unless a cheaper alternative appears.

/me wonders if kemp knows ajs current spec...

Athlon XP 2600+, 1Gb RAM, Nvidia 6800 GFX, MSI K7N2 Mobo

Palit are awesome!

There was some discussion of them being not so good, but what a lie!

I have the palit 8800GTS. and well it performs the same as any GTS. ;)

And still overclocks to 600 - 1000!

PALIT RULE! :worship:

Anywhoo that is one sweet system upgrade! :) Hope it serves you well!

i've tried clocking mine when i first got it (palit 88gtx), got it up to 600core : 1000mem, it clocked better than my friends XFX 88gtx pity about the green pcb though..

Will the GTX drop in price? maybe a little but i don't seeing it going under £320ish in the next 3 months. why? the prices are begining to stabalise now and with the new mid/low range cards coming in soon they'll help keep the gtx price above a certain point.

I don't think the r600 will drop gtx prices either, demand for the r600 will outstrip supply (theres alot of ati fanbois waiting to swoop :) thats if its not a stinker though) and keep prices of those artificially high for the first month or two.

Also if you don't believe me then think about it, history shows that the respective top end cards from both sides hover around the £300+ mark until replaced, the only thing imo that'll knock gtx prices below £300 will be a speed bump/revision by nvidia.
