i am after some advice on which GPU would be better to get, im not really to fussed about chip, brand or markers brand as long as it works.

im looking at spending at around the £250 to £300 mark. im also in two minds if i should wait till the end of year when the new GPU come out

280x is perfect for that budget but if you really can stretch is just a tad further then a 290 is a better choice now and in the long run.

Aria have the Powercolor PCS+ 290 for £295. It's what I'll be getting in a couple of weeks.

And Amazon have the Sapphire 290 Tri-x for £285 but the PCS+ cooler is supposed to be a bit better I think.

Tri-X is still better but the PCS+ cooler is the only other air cooler worth comparing it to. Both are very good.

Just the colour scheme on the Tri-x. I've already got green and red going on in my case. Adding orange to the mix would be a bit to much I think. Plus the PCS+ has a back plate which smarten it up IMO. :)

You have to go with what you are happy with in the end it's your money and machine

Also we mustn't forget the vapor-x. While they kind of look the same the vapor-x is a non ref card and comes with a blackplate. Its also bluue.

I dont see why so menny care about what the front of a gpu looks like once its installed its faceing down where you cant see it+ its only a plastic front you can allways color it anything you like ;)

sorry to drag this thread up again but ive now change jobs and was looking for you thoughts on going crossfire now i have some extra money.

only real issue i can for see is that my motherboard pci express slots are only pci express 2.0

and when used in crossfire or sli mode they only run at 8x and not 16x.

so my question is now is it going to be worth buying two cards for crossfire or am i going to be better off running a single card.

or at least thats the way i read the specs of my motherboard which is a Gigabyte GA-Z68X-UD5-B3 with a core i5 2500k cpu

you will still see a fps boost going over to x-fire you almost have the same board and chip as a mate of mine and he's running 2x 7970 vapour x's and gets great frames in BF4

ahh thanks for that mate i was looking at getting two R9 290x's or two R9 290's sapphire trix.

im guessing long term the r9 290x's would be better as i may not upgrade next time the new gpus come out but im also thinking about changing my motherboard and cpu

PCIe 2.0 won't bottleneck your cards even at x8. If they did it would be a very small amount.

Upgrading the CPU and motherboard will give you a small performance increase but probably not justifiable for the money spent unless you want all the new features.

Yeah PCIE 2.0 and 3.0 aint that much of a difference. Current cards arent fast enough to saturate them enough to make a notable difference that youd see in real life results. Hell, even more benchmarks dont show any difference.

ahh thanks for the useful info people. now its just a question of do i wait for the new cards to come out or do i buy whats about now

If you wait for new cards to come out you will always be waiting for new cards to come out sooo if you need a card now then buy one now BTW what part of the world are you from
