New Gaming Rig I am Thinking of Building...

^double checked, can fit one in the bottom. Downside is that airflow is restricted as hell then so might not be the best choice.

- Drop the Seagate drive, get a WD or Samsung one

- Your PSU is fine for a single card set-up though you don't have the headroom to go crossfire in the future.

- Pleaaase get a decent case. Does the H100i even fit in your curent one?

You are recommending Samsung HDD over Seagate!! You have to be kidding! Samsung HDDs are the trashiest drives there are.

Well, must be going downhill now cause Seagate took over
But the Spinpoint drives are good and realiable drives, though a Caviar Blue or Black would be a tad faster.

Maybe I should've said Samsung Spinpoint and not Samsung in general

I'm pretty sure the newer Spinpoints are all manufactured by Seagate though, at least since the flooding.

In terms of performance however, the Seagate 7200.14 is at the top with their 1TB platters. Not sure about reliability, but from what I've heard they are around the same as the Blues and Blacks (at least, the units manufactured in Thailand are).

My 1tb is the good old Hitatchi Deskstar for all my backups and downloads! Lasted me almost 4 years now. But it is starting to go out and I think it is getting louder LOL. Oh well, I will be getting a WD-CB soon.

Seagate has gotten better though. I remember when they had an issue where HDDs were failing left and right, but WD had the same issue in the 90s where the reliability was crap. Seagate and WD are the way to go. Momentus XT is still the best bang for the buck.

Figured out what im getting video card wise, gonna get a Asus 7850 2Gb (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=GX-289-AS)

(possibly add another at a later date.....)

I'm also sticking with AMD, cuz the Asus Maximus V Formula motherboard i want with the 3570k will cost me a fortune, yes it may be worth it but as soon as i get some money it just burns a hole in my pocket and i gotta spend it :banghead:

So i got to try save as much as possible to get what i want really....

Also what do you think of the NZXT Tempest 410 case? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-051-NX&groupid=2362&catid=35&subcat=

IMO the Maximus V is overrated and overpriced, but for AMD its the best board you can get. What I would do (and did) is switch to intel, get a 3570k and NOT get the Maximus V. The MSI Z77A-GD65 is an excellent mobo without the rediculous pricetag.

It appears you are planning to keep using the same cpu that you already have, which is the only logical reason for staying with AMD. Otherwise, if you were going to upgrade CPU to something like the 8350 and still getting the Maximus V, you would be wasting your time and money

In Australia, the Maximus V is over $300, while the Z77A-GD65 is only $179. If you were considering going to the FX8350, which is $219 here, the Intel i7 3770K is $332.

The difference: Going to a cheaper intel board more than pays for the upgrade to the 3770k which absolutely smokes the heck out of anything AMD makes. Once you consider the far lower power consumption intel chips need.... The switch will pay for itself in a years time.

I have to wonder though: If you have such an economy priced CPU what is the logic of getting the top-of-the line AMD mobo? Getting a top-of -the-line mobo only makes sense if you have a top-of-the-line CPU to put in it. Gettingthe very best AMD board only makes sense if you plan to run the very best AMD cpu. And if you are going to pay for both a new CPU and an mobo, get the performance youre paying for: Switch to Intel 3770k

If youre going to run a $119 cpu, why not put it in a $119 mobo and spend those extra hundreds on drives, or ram, or case, or cooler. Anything else is just illogical.

I went through this very same argument with myself about 6 weeks ago. I made the switch 2 weeks ago. My room is about 30 degrees cooler because of it.

Seriously consider the fact that if you are thinking about an upgrade, its because you arent really happy with a slow cpu. The new motherbooard wont change the fact that its a really slow cpu, which means upgrading that too. Then you have to look at the logic of sticking with AMD and still having a crappy cpu (even if its their best one) when you could have something that smokes it for the same money.

Read the charts in Toms review of the 8350, which stomps on your 4100. http://www.overclock3d.net/reviews/cpu_mainboard/amd_vishera_fx8350_piledriver_review/1
before you consider getting the Maximus V

btw: nice case but no side window :(

1: Get a 3570K
2: Get a decent, yet cheap motherboard, the Mpower seems a bit overkill for a first time overclocker.
3: Get a better case
4: Throw away that seagate, and get a WD drive, or a cheap SSD and small WD HDD
5:Get a really good single card setup instead of a crappy dual card one. This way you wont have to upgrade to a beefier power supply.

Those are just some basic tips. If you need more help, the rest of the community will be happy to oblige :)

Just to let you know, the Maximus V is for Intel, the Crosshair V is for AMD and its a fair amount cheaper.......

Also i might consider getting a 8320 or 8350 later down the line as my current cpu is fine for now, cuz all im doing atm with my current one is gaming........

dont go amd, a 4ghz 8350 is worse than a stock 3570. and it isnt just a small decrease in performance. i know they are a bit more expensive but you get other features like vitru mvp on the ivy bridge motherboards.

That was the whole point of my post. AMD sucks. Why waste your money on garbage? The 8350 is their best and it leaves much to be desired. For gaming the 3570k is a far superior chip.

Unless you do coding/compiling and/or rendering/encoding, the 8350 is pretty worthless. The power consumption under load is almost triple that of the 3570k

For gaming, those extra 4 cores still cant keep up with the 3570k. And if gaming is your main use, why not spend the extra $6 to get the best gaming chip on the market? Youll save that $6 on the first electricity bill you get.

Well I think I have come to my senses now, gonna go with Intel as my upgrade, and when I do I can give my dad my old pc.

Want anyone's opinions on this build:

Case: NZXT Tempest 410
CPU: Intel i5 3570k
MB: Asus P8Z77-V LX
Ram: Kingston HyperX Beast 8Gb (2x4Gb) 1600Mhz C9
Graphics: Sapphire HD 7950 3Gb
Cooler + Fans: Cosair H100i + 2x SP120 Quiet Series Fans
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium or Pro (undecided at the moment)
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM SATA3 6Gb/s 64MB Cache
SSD: Corsair Force Series 3 120Gb SATA3 6Gb/s
External ODD: LG DP30NB40 8x Slim External DVD-RW

Will my current PSU, XFX PRO550W, power this system or will I need a PSU upgrade?

dunna know if location has a bid, the ASUS is good, maybe look to the MSI G45
incase of future SLI/X-Fire. itll clock a 4.5/4.6 overclock safely with the H100i
and its majorly black-out colors

id relook at the RAM, isn't that rated 1.65v? when you first boot and not known
it will be dirt phoo slow. keep it simple and use a corsair or gskill.

the 550 will be quite enough, but id keep some reserved for a silver/gold rated PSU
seen some of those gobble a motherboard.

Thanks for the info, changed the ram to Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" 1600MHz C9 8Gb (2x4Gb) runs at 1.5v.

Also what about the Corsair HX650 80+ Gold? http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-095-CS

Running a gaming machine on am3+ is not really good exept if you are doing rendering or something but for a gaming build :/

Am3+ bulldozer or pile driver aren't really good :/ I would have even gone back to the 1090t amd did before then that

I really recommend you intel, it's not cheap but it's definitely worth it.

Now, I know AMD has simply just disappointed their fans with the lastest releases. Since the Phenom X6 series AMD has provided very little performance with very high power consumption. I have seen posts here which state that the FX 8350 is far under the 3570K... well it's not true. There is a ... maybe 5 frame drop is some games, but some gains in other applicatons.. and the 8350 doesn't "eat" 3 times the power a 3570K does. I think reviews for CPU's should have a standard power supply because some are less efficient than others and usually the power consumption measurement is done FROM THE WALL. It does indeed consume more than the i5 3570k but it performes nearly identical ( that means it's under and above the i5 in sdifferent applications ). So I think that it is worth it.
On the other side, I do belive that Intel makes some great chips, and they are also worth looking into. Its just that I would definitely give AMD a chance, cause technology will no move forward if it isn't competition and us, as enthuziasts, have to belive in that.

Well , i think it looks like a spaceship, too much plastic in the front... I kinda like the side panel window though, I don't like the mesh on the other side panel ... this looks like a 15 years old hardcore gaming enthusiast case to me.
