New CPU or New RIG?!?!?

My RIG is like this:

Win XP sp3

AMD64 san diego 3700+ 2.2ghz

ASUS A8N5X (Socket 939)

2.5gig DDR RAM

8800GS 384MB

500gig INTERNAL + 500gig EXTERNAL HDD's

Akasa air cooling two front one rear with psu outtake.

I am thinking of upgrading my cpu to an FX60 2.6ghz but i just can't seem to find it anywhere and the one place i have seen it, it is really expensive, about £160 i think.

Does anyone know of a combo i could get as in a mobo and a cpu for less than that which would give me a little bit of a future proof motherboard and a performance gain.

Thanks in advance.

Get cheap AM2 board ;)

ive got a m2n32-sli mobo for sale, but your best choice is to save up alot then flog that rig for £200 or something to a nub :D then get a completely new fancy rig

I only need to replace the mobo and cpu though all the rest of my rig is transferable oh and the ram. GPU PSU HDDS and case are all fine.

Any recommendations for a decent mid priced Mobo CPU combo?

Thanks for getting back to me by the way.

Don't know but there is no point getting socket 939, they were taken over by AM2, I got in this, the socket 939 was released and I got 4400+ for over £300-400 and within a few months AM2 was released:(. At that time FX was around £900 mark. AM2 is cheaper and faster.

Look for a cheap AM2 board and CPU. eBay or perhaps someone here has some?

For under £160 ?

U could even cross over to Intel.

(just a rough example, obviously u'd spend more time looking and pick different stuff)

Possible man very possible, just when going into this sort of upgrade that £160 turns into £560, and then that £560 turns into £860 :D.

Happened to me!

AMD just released there Phenom II x2 550 and you can get it at scan for £80 that leaves you £80 for a cracking amd motherboard

Ok Here we go, I juat done a bit of a search on amazons uk website as im in the uk myself, and i spotted the

AMD HDZ940XCGIBOX Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition Quad-core Processor - 3.00 GHz,8MB L2 Cache,Socket AM2+,125W,45 nm,3 Year Warranty,Retail Boxed,

it costs £149.99 and i am thinking of coupling it with

Gigabyte GA-M720-US3 - Motherboard - ATX - nForce 720D MCP - Socket AM2+ - UDMA133, Serial ATA-300 (RAID) - Gigabit Ethernet - FireWire - High Definition Audio (8-channel)

which costs £55.89

I am at a loss at this point as i have very little knowledge of am2 and the surrounding chips so some advice would be good here, ive heard raving reviews of the phenom 2 x4 and what it can do, I dont know much about the gigabyte mobo other than that it can take the phoenom 2.

I would also need some ram and again im at a loss as to what is best to buy, and before i have to post again, i imagine i would need a bigger power supply?? 400w wouldn't cut it no?

I will have about £300 no more, if i can get away with getting these for less then i will cos i am on a budget.

Any advice here would be most helpful and appreciated.

Thanks in advance again.

Right, I don't know much about AMD boards so I'm sorry for my lack of input.

Get a lower model CPU if possible, then overclock that with a better motherboard. The motherboard is the important part when overclocking, along with the CPU's ability to accept changes.

I would go with Intel a quad or dual core. I think there is more performance for your money.

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 Socket 775 - Can easily get to 4.5Ghz+

£136.27inc vat

Asus P5Q PRO P45 Socket 775 8 Channel Audio ATX Motherboard- I have this board, great overclocker.

£101.22inc vat

About RAM I have no clue or PSU.

520W Coolermaster Real Power modular PSU £67

AMD Phenom X3 720 Black edition £37

2X2GB corsair XSM2 800mhz £111

Biostar TA780GX motherboard £72

comes too £300 on scan including postage

would be a really nice system

Dont mean to sound ungrateful but i have my heart set on the phenom 2 x4 BE, I have heard that the 790gx is the best to couple with the phenom, so what i might do is get the mobo first, an then grab the cpu an ram an psu when i get my bonus in july.

Sorry youngie i just dont like intel anymore i went off them a while ago and ive stuck with amds every since, so sorry about that i should have said something earlier.

An the reason ive got my heart set on the phenom 2 x4 BE is simply because its quad core an faster, and for 149 quid i cant go wrong.

My only problem is what RAM i'd need and what mobo would complement the phenom best, without breaking the bank.

Thanks an sorry for being tempramental.

no problems bud its your money :), aslong as your happy with your decision also would you like a modular or non modular psu because they normally cost alot more

what wattage would you think i would need??

your system wouldnt be a major factor in the wattage compartment because you only have a 8800gs, ive ran a q6600 @ 3.6ghz with a 4850 on a 460watt before, but id say anything over 500watts for you would be safe

Oh and i have no clue what modular means.

sorry i am a noob.

shame i have a 400w psu sat upstairs, its only one which was sat in a case, never been used but i think i could pick up a 500 or 550 psu for pretty cheap.

sorry i am a noob.

it means:

cables what are not needed can be taken away from the psu saving space and it helps get rid of nasty un needed cables, cables like molex, sata power, and pci-e cables can be taken off on most modular psu's and some also allow 100% modulation

ahh i see so MOD-ular as in modify, i get it.

That would be handy as i have a few cables i dont need to behonest n my present rig.

The Mobo for the phenom is still puzzling me as i really dont want to spend over £100 on a mobo.

Will it hinder the performance do you think?? i mean will i be getting the most out of the cpu??

oh an thanks for letting me pick your brain like this its a big help.

the higher the price normally means more overclocking, stability, cooling and expandability like 3 way SLI, buttttt all motherboards what support your chip will not hinder the performance of cpu at all, too stay under the £100 barrier you should go for the 780G-780GX chipset motherboards

have a look at these

ASUS M4A78T-E 780GX

Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4

problem is AM3 motherboards are DDR3 and i dont know if your willing to go DDR3 But it is so much more affordable nowadays :yumyum:
