Hi,
Regarding SSDs...I want to want one, however I've not been so impressed with their day-to-day performance so far.
For the record, I have a 2500k @ 4.6 on an ASUS P8Z68-V Pro motherboard with a GTX 570 at 800 core, all on a single Samsung spinpoint 1tb 7,200rpm drive.
My friend has a 2600k @ 4.5 on a £300 MSI (i think) board with a pair of 480 @ 800 all under very good water cooling (wot I helped build
) - he however is using one of the second gen Sata II SSDs as a system drive - I cannot recall the exact model, but it was one of the top picks (as that's all he buys when it come to hardware) We both have 8gb or DDR3 1600 Vengeance ram.
In general desktop stuff, on a fresh build of W7 Ultimate 64 both machines feel equally responsive. During any gaming activity his load times don't seem any better than mine. Indeed in several cases he is worse.
Now he also used this SSD in his old Q9650 @ 4.0 setup, again with the 480's. Back to back my prior Q6600 @ 3.6 with a 500gb spinpoint drive felt pretty much the same in general use. Note we only both upgraded to our Sandy Bs a couple of months ago.
Even he admits he's less than impressed with SSDs so far. When he runs the various HD benching tools his SSD gives all the expected, and impressive, numbers - by far beating my mechanical drives. Yet this does not translate into any noticable improvement in they system as a whole when doing what it was designed to do, i.e. Gaming an general windows stuff.
Maybe the new Sata III SSDs have really moved the game on, I hope so, but from my experience so far I'm not that impressed.
Now, if you're building a silent, cool PC, or upgrading a laptop then SSDs definately have a place. But for a gaming rig? Not so sure.
I hope newer SSDs really do offer a perceptable difference, but the 2nd gen one my friend has - while posting impressive benches - really does not.
This is just my experience with SSDs, which is all I can comment on really. Maybe he has a duff drive, though in that case I'd expect it to bench poorly too.
Cheers,
Scoob.
