My first car at 16?

So i was at a car show today and a found out that if a car is under 350kg and has a limiter to 28Mph it can be driven by a 16 year old with a B type licence which is just a moped licence. So me and my Dad decided about me getting this car and taking the limiter off when im 17 an it lasting me to University as it is cheap as chips to run and most the parts are just from old Vauxhall corsas anyway so if i damage it or a bit needs replacing it wont cost all that much, and insurance will be mega cheap as i don't think anybody in the right mind would steal it  here is the Microcar Virgo Prestige SE 2000

I will want to get it fully wrapped in carbon fiber or something and add some bits to it as i don't want to look like a headcase, but having a car at 16 will be enough to please the ladies anyway, even if it is 28Mph haha  but i am excited for this, i might get it in colours to match my rig haha such a cute car though :D

/facepalm.

So you know - if you wrap it in carbon fibre, that has to be declared as a modification which will raise your insurance.

dont do ANYTHING to it!

its not worth the cost on your insurance which is gonna be astronomical anyways, as you wont have a full license!

Yeah i know, i will probably be getting one that needs a bit of maintenance at Christmas and then fix it up in time for my birthday when i can get my provisional . Most of the microcars are 13 years old so the body work will have a few scuffs so i would be cheaper getting filler and wrap as it made of fiberglass. Anyways my Dad will sort all of the complicated stuff out for me (i hope)

Wrapping in carbon right would cost more than the car is worth......

I did that with a case once hahaha

I wouldn't bother to be honest mate. I just got my first car, a 206. Just wait another year and get something decent :L

I have a classic mini lined up for me but im getting an internship next year with some oil company that is a fair distance so i thought it would be better than getting a bus which will cost about the same anyway and i fairly travel alot as it is so i dunno just thought it was a good idea

It isnt that bad actually because the car is so cheap and slow it comes to less than £300ish i dont know the exact figure but my dad assures me its cheap

Maybe just get a moped or a 125?

Always had a phobia of bikes i just dont like the idea that there is no body to protect you in a crash and they are really noisey which will annoy the neighbors. I have a moped in the shed but its been there for about 5 years so i don't know of its condition.

I just realised, a plastic pig fits in the B type licence, only fools on horses anyone?

I just can't picture a vehicle with 4 wheels that can only do 28mph on the road. Even tractors can do 28mph these days. I think it would seriously wind other motorists up, I can't remember the last time I drove at 28mph :/ From a safety point of view i'd sooner be on a bike so I could just jump off, and I also don't like motorbikes.

I don't wish to be negative about the idea, but I think there are plenty of reasons why all 16 year olds don't do it.

da fuq!! :o

thats me with a full license

Me too :o

I ran a check to £430 and that's a 505cc engine... and that 6years no claims. and yet my Fiat Multipla 1.6L is £530.... go figure......

As a get around car though, to get you from A - B it'll do the job.....but as others have said, dont waste money doing this car up.... waiting untill you get a Full Licence and a few years no claims bonus......and get something a little quicker

What happens when you reach a 40 zone? You'd hold everyone up, harder to overtake than a slow bike :p

What about in 20mph zones? Don't be running them kiddies over now ;)

Just wait until you're 17 mate, you'll be able to get something better. Also, will you be able to afford to run one while you're at uni? I've just resigned to the fact the I need to wait until after uni till I can get one, but at least my insurance will be cheaper than if I'd have got one when I was 17.

got my driving license for a couple months now and i have no intentions on buying a car any time soon. it's expensive (taxes, etc.) and doesn't do much for me atm, i can go anywhere with public transport cheaper.
don't get me wrong, i love cars, but it just doesn't make any sense to get one at the moment.

I'm 17 myself and a simple 125 motorbike is the way to go mate, lovely speedy thrills on the way to school, costs next to nothing to run and you can a decent looking sporty one for reasonably cheap :)

My CBR 125 can do 60/70mph when it needs to and feels no scarier than a bicycle to ride :)

but at least my insurance will be cheaper than if I'd have got one when I was 17.
that is a lovely theory. but in the real world whenever you start driving you get butt raped, my missus is 25 with 1 year no claims and it costs £900 ish for a 1.4 clio... first year for her was a 20 year old micra 1.0 and that costs £1100... i put it off for years cos i refused to pay over 1k to insure a slow car when my bandit 600 bike only cost £200 to insure... but the benefit of a car is sooo huge i do wish i stumped up the cash years earlier

It amazes me that bike insurance are so much cheaper but I guess if you have a bad accident on a bike, probably a 50/50 chance that you will be alive to make a claim.

My car insurance is up for renewal this month and that's £250 fully comp on a 57 plate Astra 1.6 SXi which I don't really use now as I have a company van. My car now sits at my parents place.
