My Daughter with autsium. Building a robot arm.

This easter i turned arround to my daughter and asked her what she wanted for easter.

She came out with a robot. I though cool ill just buy her one. any way i took her shopping and she said no i don't what a made one i what to make my own.

Any way i ended up getting her a Build your own robot arm and a screwdriver and tools for her (she aint touching mine). I though no problems ill help her build it as it looked a little complex for her.

Any when we got home with in 1 hour she was sat there and couldn't understand the instructions so i pointed out to her that each sprig of plastic had a letter A, B , C and then each peace has a no 1,2,3.

Any way to cut a short story shot (she had no help from me what so ever) with in 4 hours she had fully assembled the robot including all the electronics and wiring and parts and it was all screwed together properly. I though there is no chance on this earth she had got all the wiring correct but didnt say a word and we then installed the Software to her laptop and plugged it in.

HOLY COW .. every thing was perfect not 1 wire wrong. I couldn't believe it.

any way now she has asked to learn how to do a proper robot and would like to learn how to use my soldering iron as she has seen me using it so much. 0_o and shes only bloody 9 years old.

Ill have to hunt down a cheap build you own robot for her now !!!!

Being soppy, this brought tears to my eyes. Plenty of robot kits about tho. Im out of here.....

Yeh ive been looking but the decent ones are all in the region of £600 to £700 ..

How ever saying that i think i might get her one for xmass. she has learnt how to program this thing already (with out reading the book because she cannot understand words only pictures) and has it doing all sorts. I dont mind teaching her how to use my soldering station but im really no to sure if i should as she has no sense of danger and i think i may have to do it for her. Dont fancy social knocking on my door step asking why she has a burn mark on her if she did hert her self.

I think shes going to be into all sciences by the time she grows up as for xmass she got this massive telescope and she allso what'd a Microscope so she has them as well. She has no interest in dolls or any thing girly its all things that you would normally expect a 12 / 13 year old boy to like.

Certainly looks like a nice kit. Main reason I suggested Vex was, while it isn't terribly complicated, it's quite flexible. I participated in the FIRST robotics competition during high school and even had the opportunity to go to the world championships. It was really interesting to see the variety of what other students had come up with using the same set of parts.

shes built and own a RC monster truck with a nitro engine its a fast bugger shes more into robots atm.

there are the cars she owns

Shes doesnt play with them any more and finds them to be boring.

By the looks and sounds of things she is very high functioning congrats go out to you first of all for buying the robot arm and not downplaying her request and second of all that's amazing work she did congrats have fun finding an DIY R2D2 kit.

Maddy is very much like my self in the point that once she has learnt every thing there is to know about what she is doing (with out any reading) she will then get board and move onto the next thing. E.g shes built the robot arm. shes used it and got it all working. shes played with it and had fun. She though can i put it on wheels then came back with the answer no because its computer controlled and she doesn't what to ruin her laptop when i suggested that.

The only problem with the more advanced robots is there price and then allso she would need to learn to program it. I dont think shes ready for that just yet so ill keep looking for some thing that will be a bit of a challenge but not to much. Maybe some thing that would need a small amount of programming knowledge then she can start to learn.

lego mind stoorm is oky buts shes had lots of lego and has grown out of it now. I think ive found some thing for her ill just have to wait till i have some money and save up for her.

I don't think it would interest her as i think she interested in how to actually solder and screw things together and she loves the way gears work and the way motors moves things ect ect.

Nitro buggies. Dude they rock big bells. I do 1/10th electric but would love to move to Nitro.

Epic thread. Top stuff.

Very, considering all the cool stuff built is by a 9 year old girl :)

yeah 26 here and i FAIL! she is a real talented little girl regardless! lee she is a gem challenge her all the way my ex worked in the field and she loved it , still does (even tho i dont like her ha ha ) :)

Yeh mate challenging would be a good word to use. At school she doesn't do to well. a few weeks ago i ended up removing her from school for a whole week because they tried to move her to a larger class and she hit, kicked , bitten (you name it she did it inc bad language) the teaches and her self. when she went back they wont even attempt to move her now so i think she got her point across (sniggers).

She just cannot grasp the concept of words and letters but her creative mind on the other had is excellent.

Super awesome story! She has a ton of talent and I hope you find a robot for her. I say let her try the soldering, a little burn is about the worse that can happen and besides she may surprise the hell out of you again. Maybe she'll be doing your soldering for ya. :)

Ive decied to get her a cheap modle were you have to solder every thing to make it work.

Well im getting her two.

1) a small radio to help teach her how to solder and what the components do.

2) a small robot that detect sound and light on wheels. this will give her the chance to understand how they work and again what makes them work.

If she still has interest after that ive found a walking pair of legs bot that she could build this uses a GPS and nav system which will be good and wont brake the bank. My only worry is buying her a £700 robot and her dropping it or some thing like that all though i do believe she would not, its still a worrie and to be honest it uses advanced programming skills and i only know so much and would need to learn it my self before i could even consider teaching her.

Ive got some nice big wires for her to test solder on that i need to do for the arcade cab so when she comes back from rest bite she can have a go at doing them. Hopefully if all goes well ill let her use my station. If she does well enough ill teach her about leds and things like that as i have alot of them and she can build her very own lighting system.

i haven't got a clue were all her idea's are coming from because ive never sat and showed her how i do all my work but she seems to have her own idears on how things should work and what she would like to do. I know she loves a car i modded for my son a while back ..

this is a vid i did -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7kx5J3QU30

(btw this is a seriously heavy modded miniature car i did for my son)

She loves the way it self re charges and has all the lights and all the gear i did to it.
