kind of a rant/cry for help really.

i have updated to SP1 (running W7 ultimate 64). I did a full Acronis back up on monday, so i thought i'd take the plunge. how wrong could i have been.

my windows live mail no longer works, something about "side by Side configuration"

my itunes no longer opens. saying the itunes helper failed to start, please resinstall. i have fully removed itunes following the instuctions on their site to remove itunes, Bonjour, moblie device, apple updater etc, but still no joy. MSI Afterburner is playing up getting a "RSHL file error" or something. my gadgets (network monitor, Gpu monitor no longer work properly (again even when ive redownloaded and reinstalled))

These are just the things i have noticed that dont work anymore i shudder to think what else wont run when i go to open it.

no probs i thought, i will just restore from my acronis back up, but no Acronis doesnt work now, again same "side by side configuration" error, cursing my luck, I thunk "ok, I'll restore from my recovery disk" but nooo, go to select my backup but i get a error about this not being the last backup volume or something. so im a in a right mess

if anyone has any suggestions or a shoulder cry on, i would be most appreciative

I'd recommend doing a fresh install but with SP1 slipstreamed into the install. You can use this to change your Windows 7 install so it will install SP1 as part of a fresh install. I am using SP1 and I haven't had any problems at all doing it this way.

I don't know how to recover your backup disk though.

Thanx Sieb, just having a look at that link and im no where near competent/confident to do that, but cheerz anyways.

I think I will try and re download/install acronis see if i can get it to run again, then maybe/hopefully i can use that back up.

if i do get thru the other side of this, I will never download MS updates ever again. i know i might be cutting my nose off to spite my face, but i have downloaded SP1 before and had the same problem (but i have been able to recover), i was hoping (like a mug) that there my have been updates to the uodates a few months on, obviously i was wrong

the SideBySide Error usually has to do with 32Bit Visual C++ 2005 runtime along a 64Bit Visual C++ of a newer version. MS tells us to generally ignore this error. maybe you should check, if those runtimes are installed correctly and everything depending on it could be working fine again.

but since your system is already that messed up, you may want to do a new clean install with- as suggested by SieB - the slipstreamed SP1. if you don't want to slipstream it, just make sure the SP1 is the first thing you apply after installation of the most neccessary drivers (chipset, vga, audio, usb 3 and mass storage). another way to slipstream SP1 is to download an already slipstreamed DVD image from microsoft - IF you've got a MSDN access and the neccessary subscriptions (may be possible through employer).

have fun

thanx BabMb1N0. how do i go about checking/repairing these Visual C++ things ?

if i do a clean install wont i loose all my files etc an im effectively starting again with W7?

Where to find Visual C++:

Startmenu --> Controlpanel --> Programs and Features (or just type "Programs and Features" into the search field)

- Try and uninstall anything with Visual C++ (but remember the versions you had installed)

- Download the respective visual C++ sources here

- Install them

- Reboot

- Look for respective Visual C++ updates using Windows update (Startmenu, just type "Windows Update" in the search field

- Install them, if necessary

- Reboot if necessary

- Check if your applications in question work again

Clean install:

You would certainly need to backup your data. Depending on how much it is, i'd copy it on an external drive (harddrive, pen drive...whatever is suitable) and then copy it back after a clean new install. In this case i would not use Windows backup, because you have no idea what settings - probably in your user profile - are causing the trouble.

a few hints:

- If using Outlook, make sure you backup your PST Files

- If using Firefox and/or Thunderbird: Check out MozBackup

- If using iTunes: copy your library (usually here: c:\users\yourusername\Music\itunes) with everything (depending on where you keep your music files you may need to backup them too or they're simply in the default location (c:\users\youusername\music\itunes\itunes Media). Copying the first mentioned folder will be OK. In order to restore on the newly installed system: install itunes, simply overwrite the folder c:\users\yourusername\music\itunes with the old one. start itunes and you may want to check your settings.

- If using Games: Most games keep their save's somewhere. sometimes in the profile, sometimes not.

as you are a windows 7 ultimate user i'd recommend to switch from acronis to native Windows backup in the future. it does images and file backups even to network drives (professional and above). it's really simple to have that automatically done every week or so.

make sure you have all the drivers you need ready!

many many thanx BaMb1N0.

I basically uninstalled any C++ that was installed on the day i did the upgrade (which was the 16th)and I have turn MS updates off (bitten too many times now). so far Acronis is now working (although it wont let me used the backup i did last week), itunes is now working and my MS live mail is working too. I still get a "RTSSH" error when afterbuner starts, but i click ok and it runs ok (which i can live with)

I will give the windows backup a go to

Thanx again buddy a +1 from me
