After picking up an intel 5930k for a knockdown price from a mate I've just bought a gigabyte x99 soc champion motherboard and was going to cool it using an xspc raystorm waterblock, I can't figure out how to mount the block, on my old board (evga z68ftw) you mounted the backplate and threaded the bolts through the block and motherboard but this has me lost please help !

Does your block support X99? You screw into the actual board so unless you have a block that supports X99 (youll have some short sections of bar with thread on both ends)

If it doesnt then you may need to get a mount kit

You should have the 2011 backplate fella its different to the Z68 backplate at least I did when I bought my raystorm kit it looks like this

If you have not got one let me know and i'll send you mine "assuming you are UK based" as I have no need for it. Mine is for a Raystorm V2 block just so you know :).

Theoretically X99 and X79 do not require a back plate. The screw holes around the socket area are threaded, so you just fit the block. Which usually means your board will also come with the back plate already. Mine certainly does.

This is correct.

Its probably why hes confused where to screw things too because unless it supports the non backplate mount none of the screws will fit

Cheers lads I feel a bit of a plank now lol ive hunted high and low for the bolts and can't seem to find them. Can I buy a replacement mounting kit ? Think it's a raystorm Mark 1 waterblock, bought the XSPC RayStorm D5 Photon RX360 V3 WaterCooling Kit from overclockers three years ago

I'm sure you can get them from XSPC this is the 2011 mounting kit

The backplate is only used if the motherboard does not have one and you need to take the lower screws off the ones on your Z68 screws. It looks like the mobo you have comes with the backplate so no need for that just the posts and screws and you are all good :). bolts are M4 btw ;)

Yeah, the bolts you used on the Z68 should go straight into the bolt holes on the board. So unless you threw them out you are sorted.

I have the bolts here and they have thumbscrews on the ends, they don't seem to be able to be taken off? If I'm understanding what you guys mean of course

no the threads for 2011 socket are different you'll need to source a proper socket 2011 kit from XSPC or any etailer that carries them.

Sorry for the delay lads, ordered another mounting kit so should be here tomorrow with any luck, another question I've drained and flushed out my watercooling components will it be ok to leave them standing until I can get everything put back together ? I have work this weekend so won't really be able to get it up and running till say Monday
