Motherboard help

Hi there. My computer has been running really odd for the past few days. It boots up and posts fine and sits in w7 just like normal but any time I start doing anything even simple stuff like listening to music or surfing the web, my computer screen freezes and then goes black,no bsod though. I do not have any other computers in the house that are compatible with my parts so it's hard to tell what the cause of the problem actually is. Am assuming that the board is going but thought I would ask you guys what you though could be the problem. Thanks in advance for the help ^_^

Sure does sound as though it's a memory issue, could even be VRAM. As Barnsley said +1 try run memtest. Although if your system freezes and black screens at simple tasks it might not work, have you tried only 1 stick of ram at a time to see if it still does it?

Could also be drivers. I would start with drivers first before memory since you are not getting and BSODs. GPU drivers are usually why screens blank out, you are using AMD and their older drivers did have a problem with that.

Currently trying that now. On stick 3 of 4 trying to get in it to stay on long enough to download memtest

I have the most up to date non beta drivers for the gpu and when the screen goes blank and im listening to something the audio freezes as well, which is leading me to think its not a gpu problem, might be memory though, always forget about the memory. Hard to get into the computer before it acts up though

So I couldn't get memtest to download before blacking out so I tried windows memory diagnosis and it said zero issues found. I took off all the panels and its working fine now for whatever reason... maybe loose wire causing a short or something. Be glad when I can get some money and upgrade to 1150.. Thanks for the help though, truly appreciate it ;)

reseating your ram has probably resolved your issue by the sound of it.
Well gonna have to take that back... was fine for about an hour or two and then it started back up. Seriously frustrating as its my main computer besides my college laptop. Right now the only thing I can truly rule out is the gpu and the hdds and there is no other desktop in the house other than an older am2+ ddr2 back up computer.

Do you know what temps it hit when this happened?

Does it happen at same time every time?

Is you PSU ok? (can test that in the other machine)

What is the ambient temp compared to pc temp when it happens?

Is you system clean and clear of dust n other crap that can accumulate over time?

Are the fans working?

To me with what you just said it sounding like there might be some temp issues, also try re-seating the RAM again and see (even just wiggle the sticks while in socket)

Have you checked out event manager to see if there is something causing this that is software / driver related?

The ambient temp is approx 18c and the temp in the case according the the kraken x60 control is around 22c. I have the cpu clock speed at standard as I cleared my cmos hoping that would solve the problem. I keep my system very clean, blow it out once a month or so. All of my fans are working.I resat the ram again with no luck. Windows recognizes all 16gb.The psu seems fine as even when the pc freezes and the screen goes black, there is still power, but will try it in the morning. (it's 2:35 am over here in the east cost of the us) Haven't checked event manager and I did just update a few programs before all of this started happening.Could the cpu be messed up? I pretty sure its not but anything could be the culprit at this point.

What ever it was you updated, I'd roll back or remove said programs. Always look at the changes made prior to the fault starting.

When it has the black out, can you alt tab? Ctrl, Alt, Del? Alt + Enter?... are you using NZXT CAM software?

I tried the power supply on the other computer and that ran fine. I removed all of the programs that I had updated. Problem still there. I can't Ctrl, Alt, Del or Alt + Enter and im using Nzxt control software Which was reading 26C right before it froze/crashed.

2 things to try...

1. Change screen res to a lower setting eg 1024 x 768, and see if it still does it

2. If above still produces same results, remove gfx card and run onboard graphics or another gfx card, and see if it still does it....

Well tried that and that didn't work. Getting really frustrated.. Normally I'd say leave no computer behind but this thing is about to be

Now do you want the bad news??

To me this is singing out 1 of the very rare occurances that does happen from time to time..... Or if you are lucky, software / driver conflict

Some of your VRAM has gone bad, or there is some software that has cause a major conflict with the video drivers.

So to test, you need to install the card in the AM2+ machine, and stress it (as much as is possible on one of those) and see if it produces the same results, or alternative to that is a clean install / linux live disk and run it for a bit on that.

For a clean install I would suggest for time being to go with a spare hard drive if you have one lying around.

If the above produces the monitor still going into standby, then it might mean a RMA, but I would wait for others on here to reply first, as this is just best guess as can't get hands on with it, and they might have some other ideas.
