Midnight Smurf: Watercooled Edition

Quick update for y'all:
I've been sitting around for almost a month waiting for my Mobo to come back from RMA. Until then, I've been doing a lot of thinking. First thing I've been thinking about is where I'm gonna put some more carbon fiber, since I think I've still got a lot of room until I get to that "overkill" stage. So what I did today was this:

I gave the pump a quick wrap, since it was easy and it looks pretty darn good:

Next I was looking at my SSD. Now I didn't want to wrap the whole thing since I thought that a slab of carbon fiber wouldn't look good. So what I decided to do was cut out a hole for the sticker, and wrap around that.

Sheet of carbon with hole cut out:

Applied to the drive, excess cut off:

All done!

Also, a week or so ago I noticed my Raystorm had a little corrosion on it. Some copper cleaner got most of it off, but I heard about "lapping" and I wanted to give it a try.

The lapping station, with the first grit taped down:

The surface after lapping. Notice how the middle looks smoother than the corners; I think this is because the Raystorm is made slightly bowed in the middle, so that part made better contact with the sandpaper:

Testing for contact between IHS and the block. I think this means I did a decent job (sorry for blurry pic, but I think you get the idea):

That's it for now, but I've got a lot more planned for this build. Motherboard should be here sometime next week, but I do have some other updates ready for before then...

I said I have things planned, and I need help on one of those things.

Grand Blue,

or B-Magic?

Or something else? I'm thinking the since it ties in better with the "Midnight" theme, but it's hard to tell color until you actually have something in your hands. Or eyes, I should say.

Another update! A while ago I said I wanted to swap out my OCZ ZX850 PSU for an AX750, but budget didn't allow it at the time. Well now the OCZ is gone, and the AX750 is here!

The box :)
IMAG0561.jpg

Plain cardboard box in the other box, hopefully there isn't another box in this one.

The PSU in all it's glory. Gotta hand it to Corsair, they know how to make a good looking product.
IMAG0566.jpg

The cable braiding is nice and thick, much better than my old OCZ ZX850. The wires are black too, so even the part that isn't sleeved still looks good. Wish all the cables were sleeved though, the molex and sata are just plain ribbon cables.

Looks real nice in my 650D!

Also, in my quest to add more carbon fiber to the build, I cut out some circles to replace the old stickers on my Spectre Pros. I'm realizing now that I don't really have any big things to cover, so it's going to come down to the small details.

Stickers on the fans, along with the carbon wrapped rad:

Still waiting on that motherboard...

You could wrap the AX750 in carbon fiber, I mean the AX750 sticker or everything except for the AX750 sticker and the fan. I think the last option is coolest.

You can have too much of a good thing :)
Personally, I prefer seeing the PSU without a carbon wrap at all, especially the Corsair AX units, but that's just me.

If I ever have to go back to using wifi, I'm set :) That green PCB really was horrid...

Motherboard will be here Monday, so I can get cracking on the final build once again! Shouldn't really even call it final, at the rate I'm changing things it will never really be "done".

nice idea... looking good :)

ANGRY UPDATE!

So my motherboard got here today and all was well and dandy. MSI, for all I can tell, sent me a brand new board that I am going to assume works. So as as soon as I got home, I did all my homework, and got building. Hahaha just kidding, homework? Come on. Anyway here are some pictures:

Dinoc'd the backplate, tada! More carbon on stuff you won't see:
IMAG0584.jpg

I've already posted pictures of the building process, so I'm not gonna do all that again. However, some of the people who have been following this build for a while will notice, not more blue tube! Yup, that Primochill stuff was horrible, so I switched it up for some Duralene:
IMAG0585.jpg

I didn't want to lose the color though, so this stuff is going in there too:

Leak testing... again. What is this, the fourth time?
IMAG0589.jpg

Now here's where the sadness comes in... I let the loop run for a while, and when I came back, I noticed a little drip on the side of my cpu block...
IMAG0592.jpg

So I played around with it some more and found that the seal between in the right rotary fitting is gone to trash, and it leaks whenever I move it around a bit. So now I've ordered two new rotary fittings, at the cost of 20 bucks and another week of waiting to get my build up and running... Can you see why I'm angry???

Thanks guys :) The O-ring thing makes sense, but the leak is at the seal where the rotary spins, not where it meets the block or the fitting (if that makes sense). I'm prying at the thing now to see if I can get it to pop open, since that's the only way I can think of to get to the O-ring I need.

On another note, 90 euros worth of sleeving is headed my way and will hopefully be here soon... I've taken this build a lot farther than I originally intended to, but I'm having fun and I think it's gonna look awesome!

i use paracord.. its local and inexpensive. the only weakness are they can snag
easily on installation. but alot of more brillant colors and ideas.
just the 2-cents you were looking for...

airdeano

The thought of putting shoelaces on my cables just seems a little weird to me, plus sleeving with paracord seems a lot harder. I think the MDPC stuff will be worth it when it's all said and done.

New 45 degree fittings got here today! I got some new, low profile ones (right) that I like a lot more than the old ones (left):
IMAG0595.jpg

They look good on the block too!

I have work now until 6:00 EST, but for now I'm just running a leak test. Hopefully no leaks appear and I can finish up tonight, then I can use my computer for the first time in a month!
