make the jump too ssd?

alright fellas just wondering i have £130 sitting infront of me £30 of which is going too be a ocz vendetta 2 and the rest i just dont know

i was thinking of making the jump too ssd heaven from a WD 160GB 7200rpm drive will they be significant increases in load speeds and what not or shal i just get the best 500gb HDD there is?
 
One of the only upgrades that I can honestly say has made any noticeable difference (without microscopes or bar graphs) to the performance of my rig in a LONG time is SSD :)
 
do things load notably quicker. cos theta some thing i would like to have a play with some time. I use raid alls the time as in 2 x 750 Samsung F1 and 2 x 1tb samsung f1's.

would they make a difference say for OS loading times ect ect. Not a reader of bar graphs all just past them lol.

Yeah i'd say so. I've always been a Raptor user, and moving from a pair of RAID0 Velociraptors to SSD made things feel a bit more snappy. I've since moved to RAID0 SSD's and thats blazing fast - things like Office etc just load instantly.

Vertex are nice drives. If you're running Vista 30GB might be a bit tight tho. Also the G.Skill that w3bbo recently reviewed is exactly the same inside as a Vertex but if you can find it in the UK its apparently cheaper.
 
nah, stay away from the cheap samsung mlc drives

since putting a 60gb vertex in my main rig, i hate using my 2nd sys with a raptor 150 - so noisy and slow

as Jim says, things just pop open now with barely any loading time

Pretty much. Unless u can find the G.Skill Falcon which is the same as a Vertex but a few quid cheaper.
 
To be truthful what I was thinking of doing was leaving my raptors as storage space for games,music etc etc and getting one OCZ summit ssd for the O.S so not to junk up my O.S disk drive and hopefully keep the system from slowing down, but am wondering if there will be a noticeable improvemant over my velociraptors in raid 0 (o.s)

Is there any benefits in useing an SSD for gaming over my velociraptors???

Would there be any great increase to justify putting these ssd's in raid 0 is it worth the cost in real world use can you tell the difference???

Not much interested in benchmarks just a nice snappy OS and fast boot ups etc.

sorry for all the questions trying to get the most value bang for buck :)
 
I'm just using a single vertex for my os (win7) so can't really comment on raid.

If used for gaming, sure, load times would be reduced and if things like textures, level data etc are streamed/loading while playing, there may be less stutter.

but imho, I think they are best just used for an OS for now until prices come down, sizes increase and lifetimes are extended.

[edit] the summit drives are slightly quicker at sustained transfers, but the indilinx drives like the falcon and vertex are faster at random reads/writes (slightly better for OS use)
 
i went ahead and bought a 60gb ocz vertex :) hopefully this should speed up my pc, it better because it cost me a bomb

I took the plunge also with a single 120gb OCZ Summitfor 250 quid from novatech I thought that made the vertex look expensive at 300......

Has stiff competition from my raid 0 velociraptors.....

Just installing windows 7 RC now :):yumyum: will let you guys know soon:D
 
As promised heres m 2 cents on my OCZ Summit 120gb SSD.

Its worth noting that I have come from raid 0 (2x) velociraptors so was somewhat skeptical about a singal SSD being faster....but was very eager to try SSD tech out :)

Instantly upon boot a notice this system loads fast hardly any delay soon as the desktop shows its ready for work, same goes for shut down its very fast big improvement.

All in all the O.S itself feels snappier and more responsive things move faster and smoother, you double click and its there in a flash...flash LOL:p

Not much more I can say its very hard to explain it but I have come from raid 0 velociraptors which is about the fastest HDD available and they are fast, and there is significant noticeable improvement, SSD is the way to go!

I have left the raptors as storage (games etc) to help keep the OS junk free I feel this is the best compromise as SSD's are cheaper but still expensive.

Would I recommend?.....Yes I would highly recommend SSD's just stick to a good brand/model such as Summit, Vertex and apparently Intel

SSD's are worth the upgrade one of very few things that live upto the hype!!!
