Meh Linux, used it at college and it just seems soo complicated.

like anything really, hard to start with, then you get used to it. I was really impressed with the content filtering we set up. So easy and powerful! o and free!

it downloaded a plugin, but if i pause a video, and restart it, it just goes grey, somtimes it doesnt load at all, it just...idk.,...doesnt work properly
--- hmm u usin the flash plugin or the gnash plugin ... i have never seen this it could be a configuration specific issue --- mayb your graphs + compiz

and i am looking that up now, looks good, but on the download screen, ubuntu is not listed, howeber "Kubuntu" is, is this the same thing? will it work?

dont install stuff from the site -- go to System>Administration>Synaptic Package Manager and enter the name of the software there (and may i also reccomend VLC for a video player

so make a folder, to make folders in, for each network file, seems simple enough...

one folder per share :) or u cld just mount the //10.0.0.44/ to a folder on its own -- but that may give a superblock error

done, but the server doesnt have a password, so i just delited what you put where you put *serverpassword*, doesnt have a username eithr, does this matter? i just delited what you said and put that in there...will that work?

you can just leave em remove those options from the fstab line

10 gig instead of 120 ... what over the share on the local disk ...

Ill assume the local disk as the SMB service in Linux pwns M$ own Cifs/SMB client

--- mayb u only formatted 10gb of the disk

get a program called gparted / gnome partition manager (from synaptic) and it shall tell u -- and let u expand ur current partition in a v user friendly way.

Glad i cld help

Inkscape -- vector Image Editor // Fireworks/Illustrator-like

Multisync -- Sync manager for PDAs/Phones/iCal/Evolution etc

VLC -- Video Player

If there is ne progs u need an equiv of just throw up a post

also a p2p program, perhaps like area? or limewire, but better?

perhaps a temp monitering program for processor? (coretemp?)

a DVD RIPPINg program, that takes a dvd, and makes it into a avi/mpg file of your choise of resolution?

ermm...

if i have those i think i'd be happy :)

p2p frostwire -- limewire pro level but FLOSS

MBmon is a good tool for temps -- but your mobo may not b supported.

For paint like drawing .. Inkscape is like Macrommedia fireworks -- aka a rele good vector image program

but for the whole paint "experience" -- kolorpaint

For DVD ripping a program called DVD :: Rip (synaptic dvd rip)

ahha, thank you

and thanks to that program, it seems only some of my hard drive was formatted (wtf) and 99Gb was unknown aparantly, so i formatted it into a new partition

i didnt know how to extend the current partition

also, joe, another favor please :D

the F@H link, does tell you how to install F@H, but it doesnt work for me, if you could do it in code, and force it through somehow perhaps? :)

just rite click the existing partition and hit resize

OK this can all be done using the GUI -- but we dont want ne ambiguity do lets command line it :)

(n.b the files and folders in a Linux file system ARE case sensitive so ~/Fah is ~/Fah NOT ~/FAh or ~/fAh)

in a terminal type

Code:
 mkdir ~/Fah

**this makes a directory in your home folder called Fah

Code:
 cd ~/Fah

** this changes the location to that directory

Code:
 wget [url]http://www.stanford.edu/group/pandegroup/folding/release/FAH6.00beta1-Linux.tgz[/url]

** this uses the WebGET tool to download the Client from the above link

N.B you can type the first few letters of a file/folder then press tab to auto complete them (BUT THE NAMES ARE CASE SENSITIVE)

Code:
 tar -xvf FAH6.00beta1-Linux.tgz

**this uncompresses the files into ~/Fah

Code:
 chmod +x fah6

**tells the security flags on the file system that we will allow this file to execute -- a security feature meaning that only things that are downloaded that u rele want to run are allowed 2 do so

Code:
./fah6

**this runs the client

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

to get the client running on startup go to

System > Preferences > Sessions

a Dialog will open

in this dialog @ [Startup Programs]

click [Add]

and select the fah6 client in the Command section -- feel free to name and comment accordingly

done, thanks loads :D

worked perfectly, every little thing :D

Glad I can help young sire ...

Ok as a burgeoning Linux User ... are there any Tutorials/infoposts you would Like for me to publish??

(I believe this thread qualifies as FAH Installation and Mounting Network Shares)

one thing i should mention, it wont let me expand my partition, on the program you sugested, i delited the big partition, and there was loads of empty space, but it wouldnt let me resize it...

and not really, you've just done the 2 main things i needed, everything else is....well...not easy, but atleast like...understandable...

you should perhaps do a guide on basic's of linux, how to use it, the 2 desktops in one screen etc...

but ubuntu is so easy to use, i'm used to firefox already, the only thing i miss is the crashing :D

well, not really :p

but yeh

i like this :)

i have made it crash 3 times, and i'm still not sure why, but...ye...idk

joe, should just mention, its now folding, but it seems to only be folding with one core...and both core's are clocked down to 1GHz rather than 1.67, which is their max, is that right? ....

i'm sure smp should take up both?..

Joe, also, if you have time

amarok: wonderful program, but cant play wma's ...know how to fix this? :)

F@H : working, but not 100% on both core's all the time (like i would wish) know how to fix this? :)

thirdly: youtube, still not working, and general flash things, wont work, what program do i need to make them work? :)

thanks

kindly fix the edit button, PLEASE xms, or merge my posts or somthing, this is getting stupid, usually i'd just edit it... but i keep thinking of ideas, and i now cant...

temp moniter too, if there is a good linux ubuntu version of one, that i can have in my bar thingy at the top? :)

OK Dint C NE of these Posts

-----------------------

WMA : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats/WindowsCodecs

or synaptic the gstreamer bad and ugly packages [what I advise]

-----------------------

FAH SMP : enter './fah -smp' in a Command Line (or ./fah6 -smp )

-----------------------

Resize:

ok it doesnt let u resize ur Partition within GParted on a live filesystem

put in ur live install disk[*we are not going to reinstall*] and go to System Menu and browse to Gparted / Partition editor resize it there and then reboot (again no reinstall)

and thanks for the reps -- much appreciated

hey

how do u actually get xmbmon/mbmon monitoring?

Ive installed with the package thingy, but where is it???
