Laptop to desktop!

I currently have a high performance laptop with the following spec
Alienware m14x
i7-3630qm 2.4ghz
8gb ram
GeForce gt 650m 2gb
Windows 8 64bit

Looking for a desktop as I would like a bigger screen and a rig that will run battlefield 4 better.

• Where are you located? UK
• What is your budget? Around £1000 willing to spend abit more
• Will you need a monitor, keyboard, and/or mouse included in that budget? No but a monitor recommendation would be a appreciated.
• Shall you be requiring an OS? Yes would prefer windows 8 as really like the speed and reliability of it on my laptop.
• What will you be using this rig for? Gaming, BF4 ready
• If gaming, what resolution will you be playing at? currently playing on 1600x900 however that is on a 14inch laptop was looking to get a monitor around 20inchs.
• Will you be overclocking? Not personally was looking at buying bundle preoverclocked
• Do you need a full build or will you be reusing some old parts? Full

Recommend build for a £1000 budget Author: Bryan Waters 22/05/2013

Intel Core i5-3570K £166.79 is it worth waiting to see Intels new release next month? I read they are mainly i7s and id be happy with having an i5.
MSI Z77A-GD65 Gaming £151.01 would you still recommend this mobo, a lot of places seem to be out of stock/end of line.
8GB Kingston Predator 2400MHz £72.71
Club3D HD7950 Royal King £256.09
Was thinking of getting this instead KFA2 Geforce GTX 770 EX OC 2048MB GDDR5 Core: 1110MHz, Memory: 2048MB 7010MHz GDDR5, Stream Processors: 1536, Shader Clock: 2220MHz
Corsair H100i £107.99
Corsair TX750M £92.36
Samsung 840 Pro 128GB £107.06 & a 500gb standard hdd
NZXT Switch 810 £135.99 very nice case but may choose something else.
With the slight adjustments and additions it put the system under £1200

Your knowledge and advice would be appreciated.

Next gen Intels are already out - the Haswell series, 4670k is what you should be looking at.

Tom was talking about Ivybridge Extreme I believe which will be far more expensive.

Personally, I wouldn't go with a Switch 810 unless you're filling it with a lot of hardware/watercooling.

For just under £1200 I would get the components I found in the picture below.

For gaming, you really don't need 2400MHz. You won't even see much performance difference after 1866, but in this case I chose 1600MHz cause it's enough tbh.

I also chose the H80i instead of the H100i for two reasons:
- The case I selected CAN fit 240mm radiators, but it depends on the motherboard heatsinks.
- As you're coming from a laptop I highly doubt that you're going to do any serious overclocking so an H80i will be plenty. Even with a mild overclock.

You can then spend a bit more money and get a WD Caviar Blue 1TB drive and the GTX 770. The AX760 power supply allows you to get another GTX 770 and go SLI in the future. It's a very high quality power supply and fully modular too!

The Fractal Design R4 is a really good case with good airflow. If you want watercooling support, you might want to grab the Arc Midi R2 or any of the NZXT Phantom / Switch cases but for closed loop the R4 is more than plenty. It's also really quiet and has a huge window to see your components inside.

As a bonus, it's all properly colour co ordinated! :)

I have a fractal R4 and judging by the MSIGD65 Gaming motherboard suggested earlier... It should fit in along with an H100i, snug, but will fit.
