Jeeze SB LIVE! suck?

Now this is a way-out shot in the dark thing to try - ok.

I notice u have an nForce thingy do-da.

Back in the day of the old SB128 (soundblaster 128), u would install it on some mobos and the sound would be either absent or real poor quality - or work just fine.

Answer to these cards used to be to set the MemoryHole 15-16m switch in the bios. But this is a really old setting that not all new boards will carry forward I`m sure.

Have a look in u`r bios and see if there is anything related to "MemoryHole" - and either set/unset/adjust it - it`s nothing harmful, it`s an old legacy thing.

Worth a stab in the dark imo ;)

Never heard/seen memory hole ever.. :D

But do you think I could change the address thingy in the Bios.. I remember seeing those settings! ;)

U can google the exact explaination behind the memoryhole behaviour - all I know about it was that it solved newer cards on older systems (when u think about the time back then it makes sense). SB128 on a K7 .. maybe/maybe not.

I`m not sure what u mean by changing the address...

But if there`s a MemoryHole switch in u`r bios, it`ll have options like 15-16m/disabled/auto - or something. Just try em, cos it`s worth it.

hmmm out of the blue this is happened to another machine, crackle thy name is SBLive.

Gonna re-apply a drive image from when it was kewl and see what happens.

I don't understand why so many good cards don't support the audio render.. ?

Silly EA! :p

i believe its the ''sounds best on X-Fi'' deal ... cpu cycles or a new sound card (it just so happens that that sound card manufacturer has paid us a chunk of cash .. nothing to do with its technical merits )

Sorry if i missed anything in the middle but im kinda in a hurry.

I dont use my SB Live! Platinum 5.1 for this reason. Beefy2, and some other FPS games even when NOT using EAX do this. Hardware sound seems to screw up with it. Ive noticed that with PCI-Latency tweaking and not using drivers (let XP install its own thing without disk) it works but then comes back later. So i use onboard sound, i get better sound that way anyways. AND it supports EAX2 isntead of just plain ol 1.

My last encounter with this was last night (hence the thread bump).

The pc has been setup and used for a few months - everything fine. Then 1 day I`ve got the crackle, noticeable whilst playing MedievalTotalWar2. Infact the game spazzes out during a battle.

Now as I said I`ve re-applied a drive image - lmao took literally 5 minutes !! Which is at a point where dose was installed, all drivers and everything was working correctly 100%.

Upon booting to the re-image and starting the game, the problem was still there. Sooo, from working OK for months, a hardware problem has arizen.

Taken all clocks down to stock, cpu and gfx - still crackles.

Took another 5.1 card and stuck it in - still crackles.

The AV8 reports the bridges are at about 40 degrees, cpu around 30.

Dunno, maybe I`ll check the ram tonite.
