I've been with my ISP 'Eircom' since dial up days, until in the early days of dsl being rolled out in my area I went with the only company who were supplying, and as soon as Eircom supported my area, I switched.
Since getting on this 8mb package, in the past 7ish months, I've had nothing but trouble. The first few weeks were filled with hours upon hours of tech support calls about latency, download speed and towards the end upload speed from something they had messed up while trying to fix the other problems, but fair enough, they fixed the problem. (Although I never actually got 8mb speeds). More recently I've been experiencing really bad lag spikes
During the hours of say half 7 to 12 at night, online gaming is pretty much impossible, and some of the time streaming youtube videos isn't the best of experiences.
I called tech support and then again and again and again and again over summer, then basically gave up and went outside. Since going back to school however, I've been at my computer more and more and so it's really bothering me. One night a ping spike kicked me out of a cs:s server and someone took my place and the server was full, I decided that was the end of me putting up with the disconnects and lag and just horrible experience, I called tech support and when placed on hold for 15 full minutes, I saw red and took out all my pent up anger on the poor foreign man with terrible english. I slaughtered his each and every request with the reason it wouldn't make a difference, giving him every technical word I knew. Eventually I humoured some of his requests and ran some speed tests, he saw that *nothing* was wrong as I was getting my full download speed at that time, I began to tell him that download speed wasn't anything to do with my problem as it was most likely congestion at my exchange and that latency was the real problem. He insisted on talking me through browsing to my router's control panel and I got a laugh or two whilst asking him which version of internet explorer to use
after he was done talking me through that he asked that I turn off the firewall to allow him to connect also, I did and he told me I hadn't done it right I went on to explain that I was using a different ip address for my router, 10.13.37.254, and he connected and while doing so he asked how I had managed to "hack" the router to do this and that my actions must be causing the fault! I politely asked to speak to "somebody with a little bit more knowledge of networking," this made the man quite infuriated and he began to almost bark commands at me telling me to do several tests which all proved nothing for either of our cases. As our call neared the end with almost no resolution other than me realising that he was incompetent, he told me that if I couldn't prove that there was a problem he couldn't help me..wait what..? Yes; he was insinuating that, for fun, I was making up a story about me not having good internet access. Exciting stuff. I then asked to speak to his supervisor where I reported the man for being rude and not knowing how to deal with a customer and I also officially reported my problem.
Few days passed, I heard nothing, so I posted on the Eircom forum on boards.ie and got a response from an official rep there, next day I got a call saying that everything would be fixed yadda yadda yadda, sorry for the guy etc etc.. everything will be fixed. I thought that this was great, my opinion of Eircom being a good company was returned. I didn't get call back from anyone, I waited a few more days, still nothing. I posted again, next day I got a call, finally someone who could speak English and knew what they were talking about. He said it definitely was congestion after hearing my story and sympathised with me for my trouble. That was on the Wednesday of that week, he said to screenshot me pinging somewhere during the lag and he would call back on that Friday to check, the only time he could call was at 4pm on Friday so, when Friday came I had to rush home from school to accept this important call (to me), I sat at 4:03 pm, with the house phone on my lap and the screenshots open on my computer. 4 hours passed and I gave up and went out. A week passed and I posted on the Eircom forums once more, the same man replied, filled with apologies about what had happened, he had apparently meant to tell someone to call me but forgot to include my phone number so they could not call me, and he blamed only himself. I thought, bullshit, but fair enough. Still no call a few days later, I posted once more, what was now about 5 days ago, an Eircom technician called to my house to check out what was happening, he ran a lot of line tests, usual stuff, complimented my rig, which was awfully kind of him
but came to the conclusion that a phone line in my house is faulty, however it has no effect of my broadband and would just generally reduce the quality of phone calls on my landline. He told me that he was recording the faulty phone line and that there was a congestion problem on our broadband connection. Two days ago I posted on the Eircom forum once more. This time with another screenshot of the lag happening with the story of the technician coming and about my frustration that still nothing had been done and that I had heard nothing. I got a copy pasted reply saying to run tests and hidden amongst all of this regular stuff, I shit you not, he said that it was definitely being caused by a FAULTY LINE AT RESIDENCE and yes he wrote it in capital letters as if to make his claim seem more legitimate. Either this man had manipulated the information provided by the technician or the technician had, despite telling me something different, wrote that the sole cause of this lag between 7:30 and 12 every night, was being caused by a faulty phone line running from one side of my house to upstairs, touching the broadband, Not One Bit.
I'm left here in shock as to what to do. I've been run though hoops for months, been stood up by a man on a friday night (
) and been told that I'm making up a story about having bad internet to amuse myself. I seriously don't know how a company can make any money when the treat their customers like this. OH: They actually don't make any money, I forgot, as they've gone into receivership effectively.
TL;DR, only one isp in my area, they're bastards
I don't expect anyone on this forum to really care or know how to help, I just needed somewhere to vent this story. But bloody hell im annoyed at them. Excuse any sentences which don't read properly as I haven't proof read this.
~maybe not networking forum appropriate, more suited to rants, but I promise when I started writing this I was looking for help with my internet!
