Is the i7 2600k really the top of the line?

I have started to build my first pc and was thinking of getting a Intel i7 2600k but after watching an OC3D video I heard Tom say that it was the top of the range at that time so was wondering if any one had any information about another possible CPU which will surpass this in the 1155 socket. I don't want to buy the i7 2600k and then for a better CPU to be released.

1155 is the mainstream socket, so there will be better cpu's in the form of 2011 socket at the end of the year.

Plus you have Ivybridge as the die shrink of sandybridge, rumored to be on schedule for end of the year release. If you always wait for the next big thing, you will always be waiting, as new tech comes out all the time.

Also AMD have there new line up out next month.

as it stands today the 2600k is the top cpu yes, but as with everything there will always be a better, faster, smaller, quieter version out soon.

Is it for gaming? As the difference between the 2600K & 2500K is basically the hyper threading which at the moment games don't really use. So if you do have budget constraints and are using it for gaming then get the 2500K and drop the rest of the cash on the graphics card. If you must have the best right now, the 2600K is for you.

yes, but with that shrink and gate tweak will also come lower temps, higher speeds, more performance and oc headroom.

The 2600K is the top of the line for 1155 not for all the sockets as 1366 has 6 core 12 threaded cpu/s
