Is downclocking for vsync a thing?

hey guys,

I just tried something out and it seems to work, I was wondering if anyone else has tried this before.

I just created a custom resolution on the nvidia control panel for 50Hz, my monitor is a dell U2711.

My logic was as follows, for vsync at 60 Hz to work well you need to be able to maintain 60+ fps otherwise you will get that horrible stutter when it drops down to vsync at 30 Hz.

I just got GTA V and my 980 can do 50+ fps at the setting I want no problem, but that makes for a terrible experience for vsync at 60Hz.

Turning the monitor down to 50 seems to be working fine and giving me the experience I want. Is this a viable thing or have I missed something?

I'm getting a ROG Swift next week so all this vsync business will be a thing of the past soon anyways thankfully, just wanted to run this by ppl

Yeah running at 1440. And yeah I'm overclocked up to the eyeballs, 2600k is running 4.8GHz on water, love that chip, stable as rock.

+250 core and +650 mem in afterburner on the 980.

But still GTA is a beast
