Internet becoming a sour place to be.

I have noticed someone changing an awful lot. There is one forum, about land rovers, and there seems to be some silly questions asked. Some of the responses are brilliant. But then its expected that you have some knowledge when you go onto a specialist forum.

I never look at many other forums but if I end up on one, I tend to find a different attitude between members - It's as if every member has to out-do each other somehow...

I've havn't really seen any serious arguments, flaming or put downs on here. There's always a decent level of respect shown, even towards newer members. :hands:

I believe it shows that this :anisx:'s friendly atmosphere works, as it attracts the ill-treated members from these forums onto here. We then end up with a bigger concentration of 'decent' members. @ Mayhem, your a perfect example of this and your input/experience will be much more appreciated here.

I agree with pretty much all of the sentiment here, I regularly post on mountain biking and rock climbing forums and am pretty sure I've never seen flaming even close to the magnitude of what I've seen on technology based forums. I guess it just goes with the territory at times.

On the up side, we've certainly got a decent, caring, sharing bunch on here :)

I agree there are many "experts" that love to "show off" for lack of better word choice, but I still feel they are the minority. Asking a question usually gets more uneducated answers, some berating, and one or two that are right on without being soaked in sarcasm. Personally I can find myself in any of these categories depending on the day.

Ultimately, you are right but everyone has crappy days on the internet (just like the real world), and as more people join the ranks and gain experience, the more likely for replies for good or ill...

Phheeew just had an incident that is nearly completely in line with this thread.

I'm operator on several chat channels for a browser game, pretty much meaning I have absolute power over the regular users. To prevent power abuse users have a voice towards the operators, pretty much like an admin on a forum.

This afternoon a lad entered saying I had abused power yesterday. I PM'd him asking when I did it so I could search in my logs and either explain or apologise, depending on if I kicked with or without reason. He literally said:

"i cant tollerate it anny more. I cant belive im on with a monkey. Do wat u want, i donnot care"

Whatever.

This evening he returned, had a .... well, not mature but at least reasonable conversation with other users and I didn't get involved until I kicked one of the users for spamming the channel. Of course our dear sir had a word to say about that:

[19:19:21] <> monkeyyyyyy

[19:19:28] <> i told u in morning

[19:19:36] <> i cant tollerate u

[19:20:41] <> if i got ur real name

[19:20:54] <> i gan teach u a lesson

[19:21:03] <@monkey7> Are you threatening me?

[19:21:11] <> warning

[19:21:20] <@monkey7> Yes or no, are you threatening me?

[19:21:30] <> Warning

Taking this serious I continued in PM:

[19:22:04] <monkey7> And what exactly were you planning on doing?

[19:27:59] <> Make ur life as hell

[19:28:04] <> trust me i can

[19:28:58] <monkey7> I really am not impressed by a threat like that

[19:31:25] <> JUST giv me ur real full name with sum sort of proof

[19:31:27] <> and see

Right. Whatever.

After a whole lot of hassling, warnings, a few kicks and a single ban he and another two users started ****ing on me everywhere they could. I ended it by banning all three users from three channels.

Seriously, where are we going? :( These lads didn't even respect an assigned operator :(

EDIT: he's been banned from the whole chat network now.

I'm a Chat operator on a Chat with a no swearing policy - there are some members who will swear anyway, constantly, its not fun ;(

Technology forums are generally a lot worse. The culprits tend to be (in my opinion anyway) just plain 'dorks'. People that have little in their life to keep them grounded and get right up themselves, and what better place to lash out at others with your vastly superior nerdness than by plain old text on, via internet, to someone hundreds or thousands of miles away with zero chance of any real world consequence.

Monkey7s post for example. What could he possibly do with your full name. Even if you gave him your full name, address and times you would be home, what kind of hardened thug spends their time on computer game chatrooms. Personally I wouldve given him all the details he wanted and if he turned up either A. called the police as he obviously needs treatment or depending on my mood, B. make him eat his teeth

The antisocial behavior people exhibit on forums is definitely unfortunate. People who spend too much time on a pc drinking stimulants do tend to get cranky. When I first joined SysXtreme, many a year ago, I was suprised by the warm welcome my membership (and nooby questions) recieved. Of all the forums out there, there is none other I would rather call home

I get a hell of a lot of abuse about my spelling and all so end up braking back at the user who gave it for not being more understanding and being very short sighted even after i explain i have dyslexia. I explain that some words a spell checker picks up are changed to some thing totally different to what one is saying yet the abuse still flows.

That is when i start to lose my temper lol.

Man, I have had this. I too am dyslexic (is that correct?) and can find reading/spelling quite difficult although it has gotten a little better with age. When I was young reading anything more than a sentence was so bloody hard. :p

Anywhoo, this sour internet thing is on the rise on a few forums around the net and frankly goes against the reason most forums are created. I agree that people asking the same question over and over can get very frustrating but as llwyd said it does not justify any rudeness.

There are loads of people have dyslexia, I am lucky, I wouldnt know what its like. Though you can understand it. Whos read my posts???

I speak English, and Barely at that. Yet there are people, also on this forum, who English is their second or even third language.

Their english is much better than my attemp on spealing their language.

people with dyslexia may not be good at spelling or stringing along a few words to comprehend a situation or action but on the other level they will have a much more creative side.

E.g me

I fully understand electronics with out thinking twice or i can read code again with out having to look up what it means. I can all so learn very quickly and pick up new subjects that have some sort of visual input.

How ever just for me to type 1 post it may have to be re read more than 5 times and corrected the same amount of times just to get it right or even close to what im trying to say.

If you chat to me on msn how ever it is a complete nightmare because i cannot correct the words i type and all sorts of rubbish appears on screen. I find it hard for people to understand what i say on msn and find ppl have to concentrate more on my spelling on there.

But that is life lol!!!

Ha, tell me about it!

You guys should have been around when I was doing articles for OC3D. After publishing them and thinking that I had done a good job a gazzion errors from random words to just easy words spelt wrong.

But anyway... it all pays off with the creative side since I too find it easy to understand new concepts/pratical tasks.

Back on topic though!

I wonder how some of these forums have such high populations since new comers who ask on stupid question are always kicked in the teeth for it. :(

Probably hero worship or sorts. You go to a large community that lets say erm modding and then post a simple question along the lines of How do i cut a case. The first response should be a link pointing you to a tut or even a small explanation of how to do it. But in most cases it will excerpt a form of tactile abuse from the people who know how to do it giving them self's a superior feeling yet there ineptness proves this to be incorrect.

I spent 9 year's in the army and in the time i got made up and bust 2 times in a row. I did have the chance to become more but i gave it up as a bad joke once i came to realise that once grated the power to tell other's what to do in most cases it went to people heads. I saw this in my own friends that i joined with. To top that off i had a very relaxed attitude with my pears were as this was not the in thing to do.

I could tell stories of why having power is a bad thing yet it is necessary with in today society to promote and give these structures to people so that simple rules can be conformed to.

If its a good community how ever the people that let these new found ability's go to to there head are normally weeded out and dealt with in a manner befitting of there structure. But if the over all manner is rife thought out the higher echelons than it will go unnoticed and this will be portrayed with in its own community leading to what i would call a sour community.
